32 And he spoke three thousand proverbs; and his songs were a thousand and five.
Proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel: to know wisdom and instruction; to discern the words of understanding; to receive the instruction of wisdom, righteousness and judgment, and equity; to give prudence to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion. He that is wise will hear, and will increase learning; and the intelligent will gain wise counsels: to understand a proverb and an allegory, the words of the wise and their enigmas. The fear of Jehovah is the beginning of knowledge: fools despise wisdom and instruction. Hear, my son, the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the teaching of thy mother; for they shall be a garland of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck. My son, if sinners entice thee, consent not. If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause; let us swallow them up alive as Sheol, and whole, as those that go down into the pit; we shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: cast in thy lot among us; we will all have one purse: -- my son, walk not in the way with them, keep back thy foot from their path; for their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood. For in vain the net is spread in the sight of anything which hath wings. And these lay wait for their own blood; they lurk secretly for their own lives. So are the paths of every one that is greedy of gain: it taketh away the life of its possessors. Wisdom crieth without; she raiseth her voice in the broadways; she calleth in the chief [place] of concourse, in the entry of the gates; in the city she uttereth her words: How long, simple ones, will ye love simpleness, and scorners take pleasure in their scorning, and the foolish hate knowledge? Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour forth my spirit unto you, I will make known to you my words. Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no one regarded; and ye have rejected all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: I also will laugh in your calamity, I will mock when your fear cometh; when your fear cometh as sudden destruction, and your calamity cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish come upon you: -- then will they call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me early, and shall not find me. Because they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of Jehovah; they would none of my counsel, they despised all my reproof: therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their way, and be filled with their own devices.
The song of songs, which is Solomon's. Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth; For thy love is better than wine. Thine ointments savour sweetly; Thy name is an ointment poured forth: Therefore do the virgins love thee. Draw me, we will run after thee! -- The king hath brought me into his chambers -- We will be glad and rejoice in thee, We will remember thy love more than wine. They love thee uprightly. I am black, but comely, daughters of Jerusalem, As the tents of Kedar, As the curtains of Solomon. Look not upon me, because I am black; Because the sun hath looked upon me. My mother's children were angry with me: They made me keeper of the vineyards; Mine own vineyard have I not kept. Tell me, thou whom my soul loveth, Where thou feedest [thy flock], Where thou makest it to rest at noon; For why should I be as one veiled Beside the flocks of thy companions? If thou know not, thou fairest among women, Go thy way forth by the footsteps of the flock, And feed thy kids beside the shepherds' booths. I compare thee, my love, To a steed in Pharaoh's chariots. Thy cheeks are comely with bead-rows, Thy neck with ornamental chains. We will make thee bead-rows of gold With studs of silver. While the king is at his table, My spikenard sendeth forth its fragrance. A bundle of myrrh is my beloved unto me; He shall pass the night between my breasts. My beloved is unto me a cluster of henna-flowers In the vineyards of Engedi. Behold, thou art fair, my love; Behold, thou art fair: thine eyes are doves. Behold, thou art fair, my beloved, yea, pleasant; Also our bed is green. The beams of our houses are cedars, Our rafters are cypresses.

Commentary on 1 Kings 4 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 4
An instance of the wisdom God granted to Solomon we had in the close of the foregoing chapter. In this we have an account of his wealth and prosperity, the other branch of the promise there made him. We have here,
1Ki 4:1-19
Here we have,
1Ki 4:20-28
Such a kingdom, and such a court, surely never any prince had, as Solomon's are here described to be.
1Ki 4:29-34
Solomon's wisdom was more his glory than his wealth, and here we have a general account of it.
Lastly, Solomon was, herein, a type of Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, and hidden for use; for he is made of God to us wisdom.
