21 Before I go, and never to return, -- to the land of darkness and the shadow of death;
But now he is dead, why should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.
Let darkness and the shadow of death claim it; let clouds dwell upon it; let darkeners of the day terrify it.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.
The eye of him that hath seen me shall behold me no [more]: thine eyes are upon me, and I am not. The cloud consumeth and vanisheth away; so he that goeth down to Sheol shall not come up. He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him again.
But a man dieth, and is prostrate; yea, man expireth, and where is he? The waters recede from the lake, and the river wasteth and drieth up: So man lieth down, and riseth not again; till the heavens be no more, they do not awake, nor are raised out of their sleep. Oh that thou wouldest hide me in Sheol, that thou wouldest keep me secret until thine anger be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me, -- (If a man die, shall he live [again]?) all the days of my time of toil would I wait, till my change should come:
For we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; and God has not taken away his life, but devises means that the banished one be not expelled from him.
For now should I have lain down and been quiet; I should have slept: then had I been at rest,
Shall thy loving-kindness be declared in the grave? thy faithfulness in Destruction? Shall thy wonders be known in the dark? and thy righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
I said, I shall not see Jah, Jah in the land of the living. With those who dwell where all has ceased to be, I shall behold man no more.
And they said not, Where is Jehovah, that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us in the wilderness, in a land of deserts and of pits, in a land of drought and of the shadow of death, in a land that no one passeth through, and where no man dwelleth?
