1 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,
2 Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?
3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?
4 Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.
5 For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.
6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.
7 Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?
8 Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?
9 What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?
10 With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.
11 Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?
12 Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,
13 That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?
14 What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.
16 How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?
17 I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;
18 Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:
19 Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
20 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.
21 A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.
22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.
23 He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24 Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
25 For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.
26 He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:
27 Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.
28 And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.
29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.
30 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
31 Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.
32 It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.
33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
34 For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.
35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.

17 I will shew H2331 thee, hear H8085 me; and that which I have seen H2372 I will declare; H5608
18 Which wise H2450 men have told H5046 from their fathers, H1 and have not hid H3582 it:

24 Trouble H6862 and anguish H4691 shall make him afraid; H1204 they shall prevail H8630 against him, as a king H4428 ready H6264 to the battle. H3593
25 For he stretcheth out H5186 his hand H3027 against God, H410 and strengtheneth H1396 himself against the Almighty. H7706
26 He runneth H7323 upon him, even on his neck, H6677 upon the thick H5672 bosses H1354 of his bucklers: H4043
27 Because he covereth H3680 his face H6440 with his fatness, H2459 and maketh H6213 collops of fat H6371 on his flanks. H3689

34 For the congregation H5712 of hypocrites H2611 shall be desolate, H1565 and fire H784 shall consume H398 the tabernacles H168 of bribery. H7810
35 They conceive H2029 mischief, H5999 and bring forth H3205 vanity, H205 and their belly H990 prepareth H3559 deceit. H4820
1 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,
2 Should a wise man make answer with vain knowledge, And fill himself with the east wind?
3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk, Or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?
4 Yea, thou doest away with fear, And hinderest devotion before God.
5 For thine iniquity teacheth thy mouth, And thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.
6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; Yea, thine own lips testify against thee.
7 Art thou the first man that was born? Or wast thou brought forth before the hills?
8 Hast thou heard the secret counsel of God? And dost thou limit wisdom to thyself?
9 What knowest thou, that we know not? What understandest thou, which is not in us?
10 With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men, Much elder than thy father.
11 Are the consolations of God too small for thee, Even the word that is gentle toward thee?
12 Why doth thy heart carry thee away? And why do thine eyes flash,
13 That against God thou turnest thy spirit, And lettest words go out of thy mouth?
14 What is man, that he should be clean? And he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones; Yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight:
16 How much less one that is abominable and corrupt, A man that drinketh iniquity like water!
17 I will show thee, hear thou me; And that which I have seen I will declare:
18 (Which wise men have told From their fathers, and have not hid it;
19 Unto whom alone the land was given, And no stranger passed among them):
20 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, Even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor.
21 A sound of terrors is in his ears; In prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.
22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, And he is waited for of the sword.
23 He wandereth abroad for bread, `saying', Where is it? He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24 Distress and anguish make him afraid; They prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
25 Because he hath stretched out his hand against God, And behaveth himself proudly against the Almighty;
26 He runneth upon him with a `stiff' neck, With the thick bosses of his bucklers;
27 Because he hath covered his face with his fatness, And gathered fat upon his loins;
28 And he hath dwelt in desolate cities, In houses which no man inhabited, Which were ready to become heaps;
29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, Neither shall their possessions be extended on the earth.
30 He shall not depart out of darkness; The flame shall dry up his branches, And by the breath of `God's' mouth shall he go away.
31 Let him not trust in vanity, deceiving himself; For vanity shall be his recompense.
32 It shall be accomplished before his time, And his branch shall not be green.
33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, And shall cast off his flower as the olive-tree.
34 For the company of the godless shall be barren, And fire shall consume the tents of bribery.
35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, And their heart prepareth deceit.
1 And Eliphaz the Temanite answereth and saith: --
2 Doth a wise man answer `with' vain knowledge? And fill `with' an east wind his belly?
3 To reason with a word not useful? And speeches -- no profit in them?
4 Yea, thou dost make reverence void, And dost diminish meditation before God.
5 For thy mouth teacheth thine iniquity, And thou chooseth the tongue of the subtile.
6 Thy mouth declareth thee wicked, and not I, And thy lips testify against thee.
7 The first man art thou born? And before the heights wast thou formed?
8 Of the secret counsel of God dost thou hear? And withdrawest thou unto thee wisdom?
9 What hast thou known, and we know not? Understandest thou -- and it is not with us?
10 Both the gray-headed And the very aged `are' among us -- Greater than thy father `in' days.
11 Too few for thee are the comforts of God? And a gentle word `is' with thee,
12 What -- doth thine heart take thee away? And what -- are thine eyes high?
13 For thou turnest against God thy spirit? And hast brought out words from thy mouth:
14 What `is' man that he is pure, And that he is righteous, one born of woman?
15 Lo, in His holy ones He putteth no credence, And the heavens have not been pure in His eyes.
16 Also -- surely abominable and filthy Is man drinking as water perverseness.
17 I shew thee -- hearken to me -- And this I have seen and declare:
18 Which the wise declare -- And have not hid -- from their fathers.
19 To them alone was the land given, And a stranger passed not over into their midst:
20 `All days of the wicked he is paining himself, And few years have been laid up for the terrible one.
21 A fearful voice `is' in his ears, In peace doth a destroyer come to him.
22 He believeth not to return from darkness, And watched `is' he for the sword.
23 He is wandering for bread -- `Where `is' it?' He hath known that ready at his hand Is a day of darkness.
24 Terrify him do adversity and distress, They prevail over him As a king ready for a boaster.
25 For he stretched out against God his hand, And against the Mighty he maketh himself mighty.
26 He runneth unto Him with a neck, With thick bosses of his shields.
27 For he hath covered his face with his fat, And maketh vigour over `his' confidence.
28 And he inhabiteth cities cut off, houses not dwelt in, That have been ready to become heaps.
29 He is not rich, nor doth his wealth rise, Nor doth he stretch out on earth their continuance.
30 He turneth not aside from darkness, His tender branch doth a flame dry up, And he turneth aside at the breath of His mouth!
31 Let him not put credence in vanity, He hath been deceived, For vanity is his recompence.
32 Not in his day is it completed, And his bending branch is not green.
33 He shaketh off as a vine his unripe fruit, And casteth off as an olive his blossom.
34 For the company of the profane `is' gloomy, And fire hath consumed tents of bribery.
35 To conceive misery, and to bear iniquity, Even their heart doth prepare deceit.
1 And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
2 Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind,
3 Reasoning with unprofitable talk, and with speeches which do no good?
4 Yea, thou makest piety of none effect, and restrainest meditation before ùGod.
5 For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty.
6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I; and thy lips testify against thee.
7 Art thou the first man that was born? and wast thou brought forth before the hills?
8 Hast thou listened in the secret council of +God? And hast thou absorbed wisdom for thyself?
9 What knowest thou that we know not? [what] understandest thou which is not in us?
10 Both the greyheaded and the aged are with us, older than thy father.
11 Are the consolations of ùGod too small for thee? and the word gently spoken to thee?
12 Why doth thy heart carry thee away? and why do thine eyes wink?
13 That thou turnest thy spirit against ùGod, and lettest words go out of thy mouth?
14 What is man, that he should be pure? and he that is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his holy ones, and the heavens are not pure in his sight:
16 How much less the abominable and corrupt, -- man, that drinketh unrighteousness like water!
17 I will shew thee, listen to me; and what I have seen I will declare;
18 Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hidden;
19 Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.
20 All his days the wicked man is tormented, and numbered years are allotted to the violent.
21 The sound of terrors is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer cometh upon him.
22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is singled out for the sword.
23 He wandereth abroad for bread, -- where may it be? He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24 Distress and anguish make him afraid; they prevail against him, as a king ready for the battle.
25 For he hath stretched out his hand against ùGod, and strengthened himself against the Almighty:
26 He runneth against him, with [outstretched] neck, with the thick bosses of his bucklers;
27 For he hath covered his face with his fatness, and gathered fat upon [his] flanks.
28 And he dwelleth in desolate cities, in houses that no man inhabiteth, which are destined to become heaps.
29 He shall not become rich, neither shall his substance continue, and their possessions shall not extend upon the earth.
30 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches; and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.
31 Let him not trust in vanity: he is deceived, for vanity shall be his recompense;
32 It shall be complete before his day, and his branch shall not be green.
33 He shall shake off his unripe grapes as a vine, and shall cast his flower as an olive.
34 For the family of the ungodly shall be barren, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.
35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity, and their belly prepareth deceit.
1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered,
2 "Should a wise man answer with vain knowledge, And fill himself with the east wind?
3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk, Or with speeches with which he can do no good?
4 Yes, you do away with fear, And hinder devotion before God.
5 For your iniquity teaches your mouth, And you choose the language of the crafty.
6 Your own mouth condemns you, and not I; Yes, your own lips testify against you.
7 "Are you the first man who was born? Or were you brought forth before the hills?
8 Have you heard the secret counsel of God? Do you limit wisdom to yourself?
9 What do you know, that we don't know? What do you understand, which is not in us?
10 With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men, Much elder than your father.
11 Are the consolations of God too small for you, Even the word that is gentle toward you?
12 Why does your heart carry you away? Why do your eyes flash,
13 That you turn your spirit against God, And let such words go out of your mouth?
14 What is man, that he should be clean? He who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?
15 Behold, he puts no trust in his holy ones; Yes, the heavens are not clean in his sight:
16 How much less one who is abominable and corrupt, A man who drinks iniquity like water!
17 "I will show you, listen to me; That which I have seen I will declare:
18 (Which wise men have told From their fathers, and have not hidden it;
19 To whom alone the land was given, And no stranger passed among them):
20 The wicked man travails with pain all his days, Even the number of years that are laid up for the oppressor.
21 A sound of terrors is in his ears; In prosperity the destroyer shall come on him.
22 He doesn't believe that he shall return out of darkness, He is waited for by the sword.
23 He wanders abroad for bread, saying, 'Where is it?' He knows that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.
24 Distress and anguish make him afraid; They prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.
25 Because he has stretched out his hand against God, And behaves himself proudly against the Almighty;
26 He runs at him with a stiff neck, With the thick shields of his bucklers;
27 Because he has covered his face with his fatness, And gathered fat on his loins.
28 He has lived in desolate cities, In houses which no one inhabited, Which were ready to become heaps.
29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, Neither shall their possessions be extended on the earth.
30 He shall not depart out of darkness; The flame shall dry up his branches, By the breath of God's mouth shall he go away.
31 Let him not trust in emptiness, deceiving himself; For emptiness shall be his reward.
32 It shall be accomplished before his time. His branch shall not be green.
33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, And shall cast off his flower as the olive tree.
34 For the company of the godless shall be barren, And fire shall consume the tents of bribery.
35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity. Their heart prepares deceit."
1 And Eliphaz the Temanite made answer and said,
2 Will a wise man make answer with knowledge of no value, or will he give birth to the east wind?
3 Will he make arguments with words in which is no profit, and with sayings which have no value?
4 Truly, you make the fear of God without effect, so that the time of quiet worship before God is made less by your outcry.
5 For your mouth is guided by your sin, and you have taken the tongue of the false for yourself.
6 It is by your mouth, even yours, that you are judged to be in the wrong, and not by me; and your lips give witness against you.
7 Were you the first man to come into the world? or did you come into being before the hills?
8 Were you present at the secret meeting of God? and have you taken all wisdom for yourself?
9 What knowledge have you which we have not? is there anything in your mind which is not in ours?
10 With us are men who are grey-haired and full of years, much older than your father.
11 Are the comforts of God not enough for you, and the gentle word which was said to you?
12 Why is your heart uncontrolled, and why are your eyes lifted up;
13 So that you are turning your spirit against God, and letting such words go out of your mouth?
14 What is man, that he may be clean? and how may the son of woman be upright?
15 Truly, he puts no faith in his holy ones, and the heavens are not clean in his eyes;
16 How much less one who is disgusting and unclean, a man who takes in evil like water!
17 Take note and give ear to my words; and I will say what I have seen:
18 (The things which wise men have got from their fathers, and have not kept secret from us;
19 For only to them was the land given, and no strange people were among them:)
20 The evil man is in pain all his days, and the number of the years stored up for the cruel is small.
21 A sound of fear is in his ears; in time of peace destruction will come on him:
22 He has no hope of coming safe out of the dark, and his fate will be the sword;
23 He is wandering about in search of bread, saying, Where is it? and he is certain that the day of trouble is ready for him:
24 He is greatly in fear of the dark day, trouble and pain overcome him:
25 Because his hand is stretched out against God, and his heart is lifted up against the Ruler of all,
26 Running against him like a man of war, covered by his thick breastplate; even like a king ready for the fight,
27 Because his face is covered with fat, and his body has become thick;
28 And he has made his resting-place in the towns which have been pulled down, in houses where no man had a right to be, whose fate was to become masses of broken walls.
29 He does not get wealth for himself, and is unable to keep what he has got; the heads of his grain are not bent down to the earth.
30 He does not come out of the dark; his branches are burned by the flame, and the wind takes away his bud.
31 Let him not put his hope in what is false, falling into error: for he will get deceit as his reward.
32 His branch is cut off before its time, and his leaf is no longer green.
33 He is like a vine whose grapes do not come to full growth, or an olive-tree dropping its flowers.
34 For the band of the evil-doers gives no fruit, and the tents of those who give wrong decisions for reward are burned with fire.
35 Evil has made them with child, and they give birth to trouble; and the fruit of their body is shame for themselves.

Commentary on Job 15 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 15
Perhaps Job was so clear, and so well satisfied, in the goodness of his own cause, that he thought, if he had not convinced, yet he had at least silenced all his three friends; but, it seems he had not: in this chapter they begin a second attack upon him, each of them charging him afresh with as much vehemence as before. It is natural to us to be fond of our own sentiments, and therefore to be firm to them, and with difficulty to be brought to recede from them. Eliphaz here keeps close to the principles upon which he had condemned Job, and,
A good use may be made both of his reproofs (for they are plain) and of his doctrine (for it is sound), though both the one and the other are misapplied to Job.
Job 15:1-16
Eliphaz here falls very foul upon Job, because he contradicted what he and his colleagues had said, and did not acquiesce in it and applaud it, as they expected. Proud people are apt thus to take it very much amiss if they may not have leave to dictate and give law to all about them, and to censure those as ignorant and obstinate, and all that is naught, who cannot in every thing say as they say. Several great crimes Eliphaz here charges Job with, only because he would not own himself a hypocrite.
Job 15:17-35
Eliphaz, having reproved Job for his answers, here comes to maintain his own thesis, upon which he built his censure of Job. His opinion is that those who are wicked are certainly miserable, whence he would infer that those who are miserable are certainly wicked, and that therefore Job was so. Observe,
