1 When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:
2 And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.
3 Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.
5 And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.
6 And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.
7 And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.
8 Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day.
9 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value;
10 And gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.
11 And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.
12 And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.
13 Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?
14 And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.
15 Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would.
16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.
17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?
18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.
19 When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.
20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.
21 The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas.
22 Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.
23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.
24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.
25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.
26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.
28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.
29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!
30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.
31 And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.
32 And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross.
33 And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,
34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.
35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.
36 And sitting down they watched him there;
37 And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
38 Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.
39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,
40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.
41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,
42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.
44 The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.
48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.
49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.
50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
51 And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.
55 And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:
56 Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedees children.
57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:
58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.
59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
60 And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.
61 And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.
62 Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,
63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.
64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.
65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.
66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.
1 When G1161 the morning G4405 was come, G1096 all G3956 the chief priests G749 and G2532 elders G4245 of the people G2992 took G2983 counsel G4824 against G2596 Jesus G2424 to G5620 put G2289 him G846 to death: G2289
2 And G2532 when they had bound G1210 him, G846 they led him away, G520 and G2532 delivered G3860 him G846 to Pontius G4194 Pilate G4091 the governor. G2232
3 Then G5119 Judas, G2455 which G3588 had betrayed G3860 him, G846 when he saw G1492 that G3754 he was condemned, G2632 repented himself, G3338 and brought again G654 the thirty G5144 pieces of silver G694 to the chief priests G749 and G2532 elders, G4245
4 Saying, G3004 I have sinned G264 in that I have betrayed G3860 the innocent G121 blood. G129 And G1161 they said, G2036 What G5101 is that to G4314 us? G2248 see G3700 thou G4771 to that.
5 And G2532 he cast down G4496 the pieces of silver G694 in G1722 the temple, G3485 and departed, G402 and G2532 went G565 and hanged himself. G519
6 And G1161 the chief priests G749 took G2983 the silver pieces, G694 and said, G2036 It is G1832 not G3756 lawful G1832 for to put G906 them G846 into G1519 the treasury, G2878 because G1893 it is G2076 the price G5092 of blood. G129
7 And G1161 they took G2983 counsel, G4824 and bought G59 with G1537 them G846 the potter's G2763 field, G68 to G1519 bury G5027 strangers G3581 in. G5027
8 Wherefore G1352 that G1565 field G68 was called, G2564 The field G68 of blood, G129 unto G2193 this day. G4594
9 Then G5119 was fulfilled G4137 that which G3588 was spoken G4483 by G1223 Jeremy G2408 the prophet, G4396 saying, G3004 And G2532 they took G2983 the thirty G5144 pieces of silver, G694 the price G5092 of him that was valued, G5091 whom G3739 they of G575 the children G5207 of Israel G2474 did value; G5091
10 And G2532 gave G1325 them G846 for G1519 the potter's G2763 field, G68 as G2505 the Lord G2962 appointed G4929 me. G3427
11 And G1161 Jesus G2424 stood G2476 before G1715 the governor: G2232 and G2532 the governor G2232 asked G1905 him, G846 saying, G3004 Art G1488 thou G4771 the King G935 of the Jews? G2453 And G1161 Jesus G2424 said G5346 unto him, G846 Thou G4771 sayest. G3004
12 And G2532 when G1722 he G846 was accused G2723 of G5259 the chief priests G749 and G2532 elders, G4245 he answered G611 nothing. G3762
13 Then G5119 said G3004 Pilate G4091 unto him, G846 Hearest thou G191 not G3756 how many things G4214 they witness against G2649 thee? G4675
14 And G2532 he answered G3756 G611 him G846 to G4314 never G3761 a G1520 word; G4487 insomuch G5620 that the governor G2232 marvelled G2296 greatly. G3029
15 Now G1161 at G2596 that feast G1859 the governor G2232 was wont G1486 to release G630 unto the people G3793 a G1520 prisoner, G1198 whom G3739 they would. G2309
16 And G1161 they had G2192 then G5119 a notable G1978 prisoner, G1198 called G3004 Barabbas. G912
17 Therefore G3767 when they G846 were gathered together, G4863 Pilate G4091 said G2036 unto them, G846 Whom G5101 will ye G2309 that I release G630 unto you? G5213 Barabbas, G912 or G2228 Jesus G2424 which G3588 is called G3004 Christ? G5547
18 For G1063 he knew G1492 that G3754 for G1223 envy G5355 they had delivered G3860 him. G846
19 When G1161 he G846 was set down G2521 on G1909 the judgment seat, G968 his G846 wife G1135 sent G649 unto G4314 him, G846 saying, G3004 G2532 Have thou G4671 nothing G3367 to do with that G1565 just man: G1342 for G1063 I have suffered G3958 many things G4183 this day G4594 in G2596 a dream G3677 because G1223 of him. G846
20 But G1161 the chief priests G749 and G2532 elders G4245 persuaded G3982 the multitude G3793 that G2443 they should ask G154 Barabbas, G912 and G1161 destroy G622 Jesus. G2424
21 The governor G2232 answered G611 and G1161 said G2036 unto them, G846 Whether G5101 of G575 the twain G1417 will ye G2309 that I release G630 unto you? G5213 G1161 They said, G2036 Barabbas. G912
22 Pilate G4091 saith G3004 unto them, G846 What G5101 shall I do G4160 then G3767 with Jesus G2424 which G3588 is called G3004 Christ? G5547 They all G3956 say G3004 unto him, G846 Let him be crucified. G4717
23 And G1161 the governor G2232 said, G5346 Why, G1063 what G5101 evil G2556 hath he done? G4160 But G1161 they cried out G2896 the more, G4057 saying, G3004 Let him be crucified. G4717
24 When G1161 Pilate G4091 saw G1492 that G3754 he could prevail G5623 nothing, G3762 but G235 that rather G3123 a tumult G2351 was made, G1096 he took G2983 water, G5204 and washed G633 his hands G5495 before G561 the multitude, G3793 saying, G3004 I am G1510 innocent G121 of G575 the blood G129 of this G5127 just person: G1342 see G3700 ye G5210 to it.
25 Then G2532 answered G611 all G3956 the people, G2992 and said, G2036 His G846 blood G129 be on G1909 us, G2248 and G2532 on G1909 our G2257 children. G5043
26 Then G5119 released he G630 Barabbas G912 unto them: G846 and G1161 when he had scourged G5417 Jesus, G2424 he delivered G3860 him to G2443 be crucified. G4717
27 Then G5119 the soldiers G4757 of the governor G2232 took G3880 Jesus G2424 into G1519 the common hall, G4232 and gathered G4863 unto G1909 him G846 the whole G3650 band G4686 of soldiers.
28 And G2532 they stripped G1562 him, G846 and put on G4060 him G846 a scarlet G2847 robe. G5511
29 And G2532 when they had platted G4120 a crown G4735 of G1537 thorns, G173 they put G2007 it upon G1909 his G846 head, G2776 and G2532 a reed G2563 in G1909 his G846 right hand: G1188 and G2532 they bowed the knee G1120 before G1715 him, G846 and mocked G1702 him, G846 saying, G3004 Hail, G5463 King G935 of the Jews! G2453
30 And G2532 they spit G1716 upon G1519 him, G846 and took G2983 the reed, G2563 and G2532 smote G5180 him G846 on G1519 the head. G2776
31 And G2532 after G3753 that they had mocked G1702 him, G846 they took G1562 the robe G5511 off G1562 from him, G846 and G2532 put G1746 his own G846 raiment G2440 on G1746 him, G846 and G2532 led G520 him G846 away G520 to G1519 crucify G4717 him.
32 And G1161 as they came out, G1831 they found G2147 a man G444 of Cyrene, G2956 Simon G4613 by name: G3686 him G5126 they compelled G29 to G2443 bear G142 his G846 cross. G4716
33 And G2532 when they were come G2064 unto G1519 a place G5117 called G3004 Golgotha, G1115 that G3739 is G2076 to say, G3004 a place G5117 of a skull, G2898
34 They gave G1325 him G846 vinegar G3690 to drink G4095 mingled G3396 with G3326 gall: G5521 and G2532 when he had tasted G1089 thereof, he would G2309 not G3756 drink. G4095
35 And G1161 they crucified G4717 him, G846 and parted G1266 his G846 garments, G2440 casting G906 lots: G2819 that G2443 it might be fulfilled G4137 which G3588 was spoken G4483 by G5259 the prophet, G4396 They parted G1266 my G3450 garments G2440 among them, G1438 and G2532 upon G1909 my G3450 vesture G2441 did they cast G906 lots. G2819
36 And G2532 sitting down G2521 they watched G5083 him G846 there; G1563
37 And G2532 set up G2007 over G1883 his G846 head G2776 his G846 accusation G156 written, G1125 THIS G3778 IS G2076 JESUS G2424 THE KING G935 OF THE JEWS. G2453
38 Then G5119 were there two G1417 thieves G3027 crucified G4717 with G4862 him, G846 one G1520 on G1537 the right hand, G1188 and G2532 another G1520 on G1537 the left. G2176
39 And G1161 they that passed by G3899 reviled G987 him, G846 wagging G2795 their G846 heads, G2776
40 And G2532 saying, G3004 Thou that destroyest G2647 the temple, G3485 and G2532 buildest G3618 it in G1722 three G5140 days, G2250 save G4982 thyself. G4572 If G1487 thou be G1488 the Son G5207 of God, G2316 come down G2597 from G575 the cross. G4716
41 G1161 Likewise G3668 also G2532 the chief priests G749 mocking G1702 him, with G3326 the scribes G1122 and G2532 elders, G4245 said, G3004
42 He saved G4982 others; G243 himself G1438 he cannot G3756 G1410 save. G4982 If G1487 he be G2076 the King G935 of Israel, G2474 let him G2597 now G3568 come down G2597 from G575 the cross, G4716 and G2532 we will believe G4100 him. G846
43 He trusted G3982 in G1909 God; G2316 let him deliver G4506 him G846 now, G3568 if G1487 he will have G2309 him: G846 for G1063 he said, G2036 G3754 I am G1510 the Son G5207 of God. G2316
44 G1161 The thieves G3027 also, G2532 which G3588 were crucified G4957 with him, G846 cast G3679 the same G846 in his G846 teeth. G3679
45 Now G1161 from G575 the sixth G1623 hour G5610 there was G1096 darkness G4655 over G1909 all G3956 the land G1093 unto G2193 the ninth G1766 hour. G5610
46 And G1161 about G4012 the ninth G1766 hour G5610 Jesus G2424 cried G310 with a loud G3173 voice, G5456 saying, G3004 Eli, G2241 Eli, G2241 lama G2982 sabachthani? G4518 that G5123 is to say, My G3450 God, G2316 my G3450 God, G2316 why G2444 hast thou forsaken G1459 me? G3165
47 G1161 Some of them G5100 that stood G2476 there, G1563 when they heard G191 that, said, G3004 G3754 This G3778 man calleth for G5455 Elias. G2243
48 And G2532 straightway G2112 one G1520 of G1537 them G846 ran, G5143 and G2532 took G2983 a spunge, G4699 and G5037 filled G4130 it with vinegar, G3690 and G2532 put it on G4060 a reed, G2563 and gave G4222 him G846 to drink. G4222
49 The G1161 rest G3062 said, G3004 Let be, G863 let us see G1492 whether G1487 Elias G2243 will come G2064 to save G4982 him. G846
50 G1161 Jesus, G2424 when he had cried G2896 again G3825 with a loud G3173 voice, G5456 yielded up G863 the ghost. G4151
51 And, G2532 behold, G2400 the veil G2665 of the temple G3485 was rent G4977 in G1519 twain G1417 from G575 the top G509 to G2193 the bottom; G2736 and G2532 the earth G1093 did quake, G4579 and G2532 the rocks G4073 rent; G4977
52 And G2532 the graves G3419 were opened; G455 and G2532 many G4183 bodies G4983 of the saints G40 which G3588 slept G2837 arose, G1453
53 And G2532 came G1831 out of G1537 the graves G3419 after G3326 his G846 resurrection, G1454 and went G1525 into G1519 the holy G40 city, G4172 and G2532 appeared G1718 unto many. G4183
54 Now G1161 when the centurion, G1543 and G2532 they that were with G3326 him, G846 watching G5083 Jesus, G2424 saw G1492 the earthquake, G4578 and G2532 those things that were done, G1096 they feared G5399 greatly, G4970 saying, G3004 Truly G230 this G3778 was G2258 the Son G5207 of God. G2316
55 And G1161 many G4183 women G1135 were G2258 there G1563 beholding G2334 afar off, G575 G3113 which G3748 followed G190 Jesus G2424 from G575 Galilee, G1056 ministering G1247 unto him: G846
56 Among G1722 which G3739 was G2258 Mary G3137 Magdalene, G3094 and G2532 Mary G3137 the mother G3384 of James G2385 and G2532 Joses, G2500 and G2532 the mother G3384 of Zebedee's G2199 children. G5207
57 When G1161 the even G3798 was come, G1096 there came G2064 a rich G4145 man G444 of G575 Arimathaea, G707 named G5122 Joseph, G2501 who G3739 also G2532 himself G846 was G3100 Jesus' G2424 disciple: G3100
58 He G3778 went G4334 to Pilate, G4091 and begged G154 the body G4983 of Jesus. G2424 Then G5119 Pilate G4091 commanded G2753 the body G4983 to be delivered. G591
59 And G2532 when Joseph G2501 had taken G2983 the body, G4983 he wrapped G1794 it G846 in a clean G2513 linen cloth, G4616
60 And G2532 laid G5087 it G846 in G1722 his own G846 new G2537 tomb, G3419 which G3739 he had hewn out G2998 in G1722 the rock: G4073 and G2532 he rolled G4351 a great G3173 stone G3037 to the door G2374 of the sepulchre, G3419 and departed. G565
61 And G1161 there G1563 was G2258 Mary G3137 Magdalene, G3094 and G2532 the other G243 Mary, G3137 sitting G2521 over against G561 the sepulchre. G5028
62 Now G1161 the next day, G1887 that G3748 followed G2076 G3326 the day of the preparation, G3904 the chief priests G749 and G2532 Pharisees G5330 came together G4863 unto G4314 Pilate, G4091
63 Saying, G3004 Sir, G2962 we remember G3415 that G3754 that G1565 deceiver G4108 said, G2036 while he was yet G2089 alive, G2198 After G3326 three G5140 days G2250 I will rise again. G1453
64 Command G2753 therefore G3767 that the sepulchre G5028 be made sure G805 until G2193 the third G5154 day, G2250 lest G3379 his G846 disciples G3101 come G2064 by night, G3571 and steal G2813 him G846 away, G2813 and G2532 say G2036 unto the people, G2992 He is risen G1453 from G575 the dead: G3498 so G2532 the last G2078 error G4106 shall be G2071 worse than G5501 the first. 1 Now when morning was come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:
2 and they bound him, and led him away, and delivered him up to Pilate the governor.
3 Then Judas, who betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
4 saying, I have sinned in that I betrayed innocent blood. But they said, What is that to us? see thou `to it'.
5 And he cast down the pieces of silver into the sanctuary, and departed; and he went away and hanged himself.
6 And the chief priests took the pieces of silver, and said, It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is the price of blood.
7 And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.
8 Wherefore that field was called, the field of blood, unto this day.
9 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was priced, whom `certain' of the children of Israel did price;
10 and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.
11 Now Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.
12 And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.
13 Then saith Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?
14 And he gave him no answer, not even to one word: insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.
15 Now at the feast the governor was wont to release unto the multitude one prisoner, whom they would.
16 And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.
17 When therefore they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?
18 For he knew that for envy they had delivered him up.
19 And while he was sitting on the judgment-seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that righteous man; for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.
20 Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.
21 But the governor answered and said unto them, Which of the two will ye that I release unto you? And they said, Barabbas.
22 Pilate saith unto them, What then shall I do unto Jesus who is called Christ? They all say, Let him be crucified.
23 And he said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out exceedingly, saying, Let him be crucified.
24 So when Pilate saw that he prevailed nothing, but rather that a tumult was arising, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this righteous man; see ye `to it'.
25 And all the people answered and said, His blood `be' on us, and on our children.
26 Then released he unto them Barabbas; but Jesus he scourged and delivered to be crucified.
27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium, and gathered unto him the whole band.
28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.
29 And they platted a crown of thorns and put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they kneeled down before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!
30 And they spat upon him, and took the reed and smote him on the head.
31 And when they had mocked him, they took off from him the robe, and put on him his garments, and led him away to crucify him.
32 And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to go `with them', that he might bear his cross.
33 And they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, The place of a skull,
34 they gave him wine to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted it, he would not drink.
35 And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments among them, casting lots;
36 and they sat and watched him there.
37 And they set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
38 Then are there crucified with him two robbers, one on the right hand and one on the left.
39 And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads,
40 and saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself: if thou art the Son of God, come down from the cross.
41 In like manner also the chief priests mocking `him', with the scribes and elders, said,
42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. He is the King of Israel; let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe on him.
43 He trusteth on God; let him deliver him now, if he desireth him: for he said, I am the Son of God.
44 And the robbers also that were crucified with him cast upon him the same reproach.
45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
47 And some of them stood there, when they heard it, said, This man calleth Elijah.
48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.
49 And the rest said, Let be; let us see whether Elijah cometh to save him.
50 And Jesus cried again with a loud voice, and yielded up his spirit.
51 And behold, the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake; and the rocks were rent;
52 and the tombs were opened; and many bodies of the saints that had fallen asleep were raised;
53 and coming forth out of the tombs after his resurrection they entered into the holy city and appeared unto many.
54 Now the centurion, and they that were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earthquake, and the things that were done, feared exceedingly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.
55 And many women were there beholding from afar, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:
56 among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
57 And when even was come, there came a rich man from Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:
58 this man went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded it to be given up.
59 And Joseph took the body, and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and departed.
61 And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.
62 Now on the morrow, which is `the day' after the Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees were gathered together unto Pilate,
63 saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said while he was yet alive, After three days I rise again.
64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest haply his disciples come and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: and the last error will be worse than the first.
65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a guard: go, make it `as' sure as ye can.
66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, the guard being with them.
1 And morning having come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus, so as to put him to death;
2 and having bound him, they did lead away, and delivered him up to Pontius Pilate, the governor.
3 Then Judas -- he who delivered him up -- having seen that he was condemned, having repented, brought back the thirty silverlings to the chief priests, and to the elders, saying,
4 `I did sin, having delivered up innocent blood;' and they said, `What -- to us? thou shalt see!'
5 and having cast down the silverlings in the sanctuary, he departed, and having gone away, he did strangle himself.
6 And the chief priests having taken the silverlings, said, `It is not lawful to put them to the treasury, seeing it is the price of blood;'
7 and having taken counsel, they bought with them the field of the potter, for the burial of strangers;
8 therefore was that field called, `Field of blood,' unto this day.
9 Then was fulfilled that spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying, `And I took the thirty silverlings, the price of him who hath been priced, whom they of the sons of Israel did price,
10 and gave them for the field of the potter, as the Lord did appoint to me.'
11 And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor did question him, saying, `Art thou the king of the Jews!' And Jesus said to him, `Thou sayest.'
12 And in his being accused by the chief priests and the elders, he did not answer any thing,
13 then saith Pilate to him, `Dost thou not hear how many things they witness against thee?'
14 And he did not answer him, not even to one word, so that the governor did wonder greatly.
15 And at the feast the governor had been accustomed to release one to the multitude, a prisoner, whom they willed,
16 and they had then a noted prisoner, called Barabbas,
17 they therefore having been gathered together, Pilate said to them, `Whom will ye I shall release to you? Barabbas or Jesus who is called Christ?'
18 for he had known that because of envy they had delivered him up.
19 And as he is sitting on the tribunal, his wife sent unto him, saying, `Nothing -- to thee and to that righteous one, for many things did I suffer to-day in a dream because of him.'
20 And the chief priests and the elders did persuade the multitudes that they might ask for themselves Barabbas, and might destroy Jesus;
21 and the governor answering said to them, `Which of the two will ye `that' I shall release to you?' And they said, `Barabbas.'
22 Pilate saith to them, `What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?' They all say to him, `Let be crucified!'
23 And the governor said, `Why, what evil did he?' and they were crying out the more, saying, `Let be crucified.'
24 And Pilate having seen that it profiteth nothing, but rather a tumult is made, having taken water, he did wash the hands before the multitude, saying, `I am innocent from the blood of this righteous one; ye -- ye shall see;'
25 and all the people answering said, `His blood `is' upon us, and upon our children!'
26 Then did he release to them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered `him' up that he may be crucified;
27 then the soldiers of the governor having taken Jesus to the Praetorium, did gather to him all the band;
28 and having unclothed him, they put around him a crimson cloak,
29 and having plaited him a crown out of thorns they put `it' on his head, and a reed in his right hand, and having kneeled before him, they were mocking him, saying, `Hail, the king of the Jews.'
30 And having spit on him, they took the reed, and were smiting on his head;
31 and when they had mocked him, they took off from him the cloak, and put on him his own garments, and led him away to crucify `him'.
32 And coming forth, they found a man, a Cyrenian, by name Simon: him they impressed that he might bear his cross;
33 and having come to a place called Golgotha, that is called Place of a Skull,
34 they gave him to drink vinegar mixed with gall, and having tasted, he would not drink.
35 And having crucified him, they divided his garments, casting a lot, that it might be fulfilled that was spoken by the prophet, `They divided my garments to themselves, and over my vesture they cast a lot;'
36 and sitting down, they were watching him there,
37 and they put up over his head, his accusation written, `This is Jesus, the king of the Jews.'
38 Then crucified with him are two robbers, one on the right hand, and one on the left,
39 and those passing by were speaking evil of him, wagging their heads,
40 and saying, `Thou that art throwing down the sanctuary, and in three days building `it', save thyself; if Son thou art of God, come down from the cross.'
41 And in like manner also the chief priests mocking, with the scribes and elders, said,
42 `Others he saved; himself he is not able to save! If he be King of Israel, let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe him;
43 he hath trusted on God, let Him now deliver him, if He wish him, because he said -- Son of God I am;'
44 with the same also the robbers, who were crucified with him, were reproaching him.
45 And from the sixth hour darkness came over all the land unto the ninth hour,
46 and about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a great voice, saying, `Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?' that is, `My God, my God, why didst Thou forsake me?'
47 And certain of those standing there having heard, said -- `Elijah he doth call;'
48 and immediately, one of them having run, and having taken a spunge, having filled `it' with vinegar, and having put `it' on a reed, was giving him to drink,
49 but the rest said, `Let alone, let us see if Elijah doth come -- about to save him.'
50 And Jesus having again cried with a great voice, yielded the spirit;
51 and lo, the vail of the sanctuary was rent in two from top unto bottom, and the earth did quake, and the rocks were rent,
52 and the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who have fallen asleep, arose,
53 and having come forth out of the tombs after his rising, they went into the holy city, and appeared to many.
54 And the centurion, and those with him watching Jesus, having seen the earthquake, and the things that were done, were exceedingly afraid, saying, `Truly this was God's Son.'
55 And there were there many women beholding from afar, who did follow Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him,
56 among whom was Mary the Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and of Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
57 And evening having come, there came a rich man, from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also himself was discipled to Jesus,
58 he having gone near to Pilate, asked for himself the body of Jesus; then Pilate commanded the body to be given back.
59 And having taken the body, Joseph wrapped it in clean linen,
60 and laid it in his new tomb, that he hewed in the rock, and having rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, he went away;
61 and there were there Mary the Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over-against the sepulchre.
62 And on the morrow that is after the preparation, were gathered together the chief priests, and the Pharisees, unto Pilate,
63 saying, `Sir, we have remembered that that deceiver said while yet living, After three days I do rise;
64 command, then, the sepulchre to be made secure till the third day, lest his disciples, having come by night, may steal him away, and may say to the people, He rose from the dead, and the last deceit shall be worse than the first.'
65 And Pilate said to them, `Ye have a watch, go away, make secure -- as ye have known;'
66 and they, having gone, did make the sepulchre secure, having sealed the stone, together with the watch.
1 And when it was morning all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus so that they might put him to death.
2 And having bound him they led him away, and delivered him up to Pontius Pilate, the governor.
3 Then Judas, who delivered him up, seeing that he had been condemned, filled with remorse, returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders,
4 saying, I have sinned [in] having delivered up guiltless blood. But they said, What is that to us? see *thou* [to that].
5 And having cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, he left the place, and went away and hanged himself.
6 And the chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, It is not lawful to cast them into the Corban, since it is [the] price of blood.
7 And having taken counsel, they bought with them the field of the potter for a burying-ground for strangers.
8 Wherefore that field has been called Blood-field unto this day.
9 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremias the prophet, saying, And I took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was set a price on, whom [they who were] of the sons of Israel had set a price on,
10 and they gave them for the field of the potter, according as [the] Lord commanded me.
11 But Jesus stood before the governor. And the governor questioned him, saying, Art *thou* the King of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, Thou sayest.

20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds that they should beg for Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.
21 And the governor answering said to them, Which of the two will ye that I release unto you? And they said, Barabbas.
22 Pilate says to them, What then shall I do with Jesus, who is called Christ? They all say, Let him be crucified.
23 And the governor said, What evil then has he done? But they cried more than ever, saying, Let him be crucified.
24 And Pilate, seeing that it availed nothing, but that rather a tumult was arising, having taken water, washed his hands before the crowd, saying, I am guiltless of the blood of this righteous one: see *ye* [to it].
25 And all the people answering said, His blood [be] on us and on our children.

30 And having spit upon him, they took the reed and beat [him] on his head.
31 And when they had mocked him, they took the cloak off him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him away to crucify.
32 And as they went forth they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name; him they compelled to go [with them] that he might bear his cross.

39 But the passers-by reviled him, shaking their heads

41 [And] in like manner the chief priests also, mocking, with the scribes and elders, said,

44 And the robbers also who had been crucified with him cast the same reproaches on him.
45 Now from [the] sixth hour there was darkness over the whole land until [the] ninth hour;

49 But the rest said, Let be; let us see if Elias comes to save him.
50 And Jesus, having again cried with a loud voice, gave up the ghost.
51 And lo, the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom, and the earth was shaken, and the rocks were rent,
52 and the tombs were opened; and many bodies of the saints fallen asleep arose,
53 and going out of the tombs after his arising, entered into the holy city and appeared unto many.
54 But the centurion, and they who were with him on guard over Jesus, seeing the earthquake and the things that took place, feared greatly, saying, Truly this [man] was Son of God.
55 And there were there many women beholding from afar off, who had followed Jesus from Galilee ministering to him,

57 Now when even was come there came a rich man of Arimathaea, his name Joseph, who also himself was a disciple to Jesus.
58 *He*, going to Pilate, begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given up.
59 And Joseph having got the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
60 and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn in the rock; and having rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, went away.
61 But Mary of Magdala was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the sepulchre.
62 Now on the morrow, which is after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees came together to Pilate,

64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be secured until the third day, lest his disciples should come and steal him away, and say to the people, He is risen from the dead; and the last error shall be worse than the first.
65 And Pilate said to them, Ye have a watch: go, secure it as well as ye know how.
66 And they went and secured the sepulchre, having sealed the stone, with the watch [besides].
1 Now when morning had come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:
2 and they bound him, and led him away, and delivered him up to Pontius Pilate, the governor.
3 Then Judas, who betrayed him, when he saw that Jesus was condemned, felt remorse, and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,

6 The chief priests took the pieces of silver, and said, "It's not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is the price of blood."
7 They took counsel, and bought the potter's field with them, to bury strangers in.
8 Therefore that field was called "The Field of Blood" to this day.
9 Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying, "They took the thirty pieces of silver, The price of him upon whom a price had been set, Whom some of the children of Israel priced,
10 And they gave them for the potter's field, As the Lord commanded me."
11 Now Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus said to him, "So you say."
12 When he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.
13 Then Pilate said to him, "Don't you hear how many things they testify against you?"
14 He gave him no answer, not even one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.
15 Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release to the multitude one prisoner, whom they desired.
16 They had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.

23 But the governor said, "Why? What evil has he done?" But they cried out exceedingly, saying, "Let him be crucified!"
24 So when Pilate saw that nothing was being gained, but rather that a disturbance was starting, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, "I am innocent of the blood of this righteous person. You see to it."
25 All the people answered, "May his blood be on us, and on our children!"
26 Then he released to them Barabbas, but Jesus he flogged and delivered to be crucified.
27 Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium, and gathered the whole garrison together against him.
28 They stripped him, and put a scarlet robe on him.
29 They braided a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they kneeled down before him, and mocked him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"
30 They spat on him, and took the reed and struck him on the head.

34 They gave him sour wine to drink mixed with gall. When he had tasted it, he would not drink.
35 When they had crucified him, they divided his clothing among them, casting lots,{TR adds "that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: 'They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots;'" [see Psalm 22:18 and John 19:24]}
36 and they sat and watched him there.
37 They set up over his head the accusation against him written, "THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS."
38 Then there were two robbers crucified with him, one on his right hand and one on the left.
39 Those who passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads,
40 and saying, "You who destroy the temple, and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!"
41 Likewise the chief priests also mocking, with the scribes, the Pharisees,{TR omits "the Pharisees"} and the elders, said,
42 "He saved others, but he can't save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him.
43 He trusts in God. Let God deliver him now, if he wants him; for he said, 'I am the Son of God.'"
44 The robbers also who were crucified with him cast on him the same reproach.
45 Now from the sixth hour{noon} there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.{3:00 P. M.}
46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lima{TR reads "lama" instead of "lima"} sabachthani?" That is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
47 Some of them who stood there, when they heard it, said, "This man is calling Elijah."
48 Immediately one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him a drink.
49 The rest said, "Let him be. Let's see whether Elijah comes to save him."
50 Jesus cried again with a loud voice, and yielded up his spirit.
51 Behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom. The earth quaked and the rocks were split.
52 The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised;
53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, they entered into the holy city and appeared to many.
54 Now the centurion, and those who were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earthquake, and the things that were done, feared exceedingly, saying, "Truly this was the Son of God."
55 Many women were there watching from afar, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, serving him.
56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
57 When evening had come, a rich man from Arimathaea, named Joseph, who himself was also Jesus' disciple came.
58 This man went to Pilate, and asked for Jesus' body. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given up.
59 Joseph took the body, and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock, and he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and departed.
61 Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb.
62 Now on the next day, which was the day after the Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees were gathered together to Pilate,
63 saying, "Sir, we remember what that deceiver said while he was still alive: 'After three days I will rise again.'
64 Command therefore that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest perhaps his disciples come at night and steal him away, and tell the people, 'He is risen from the dead;' and the last deception will be worse than the first."
65 Pilate said to them, "You have a guard. Go, make it as secure as you can."
66 So they went with the guard and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone.
1 Now when it was morning, all the chief priests and those in authority took thought together with the purpose of putting Jesus to death.
2 And they put cords on him and took him away, and gave him up to Pilate, the ruler.
3 Then Judas, who was false to him, seeing that he was to be put to death, in his regret took back the thirty bits of silver to the chief priests and those in authority,
4 Saying, I have done wrong in giving into your hands an upright man. But they said, What is that to us? it is your business.
5 And he put down the silver in the Temple and went out, and put himself to death by hanging.
6 And the chief priests took the silver and said, It is not right to put it in the Temple store for it is the price of blood.
7 And they made a decision to get with the silver the potter's field, as a place for the dead of other countries.
8 For this cause that field was named, The field of blood, to this day.
9 Then came true that which was said by Jeremiah the prophet, And they took the thirty bits of silver, the price of him who was valued by the children of Israel;
10 And they gave them for the potter's field, as I had word from the Lord.
11 And Jesus was before the ruler, who put a question to him, Are you the King of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, You say so.
12 But when the chief priests and those in authority made statements against him, he gave no answer.
13 Then says Pilate to him, Do you give no attention to what their witnesses say against you?
14 And he gave him no answer, not even a word: so that the ruler was greatly surprised.
15 Now at the feast it was the way for the ruler to let free to the people one prisoner, at their selection.
16 And they had then an important prisoner, whose name was Barabbas.
17 So when they came together, Pilate said to them, Whom will you have? Barabbas, or Jesus, who is named Christ?
18 For he saw that for envy they had given him up.
19 And while he was on the judge's seat, his wife sent to him, saying, Have nothing to do with that upright man, for I have had much trouble this day in a dream because of him.
20 Now the chief priests and those in authority got the people to make request for Barabbas, and for Jesus to be put to death.
21 But the ruler made answer and said to them, Which of the two is it your pleasure that I let go free? And they said, Barabbas.
22 Pilate says to them, What, then, am I to do with Jesus, who is named Christ? They all say, Let him be put to death on the cross.
23 And he said, Why, what evil has he done? But they gave loud cries, saying, To the cross with him!
24 So when Pilate saw that he was able to do nothing, but that trouble was working up, he took water and, washing his hands before the people, said, The blood of this upright man is not on my hands: you are responsible.
25 And all the people made answer and said, Let his blood be on us, and on our children.
26 Then he let Barabbas go free: but after having Jesus whipped, he gave him up to be put to death on the cross.
27 Then the ruler's armed men took Jesus into the open square, and got all their band together.
28 And they took off his clothing, and put on him a red robe.
29 And they made a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and put a rod in his right hand, and they went down on their knees before him, and made sport of him, saying, Long life to the King of the Jews.
30 And they put shame on him, and gave him blows on the head with the rod.
31 And when they had made sport of him, they took the robe off him, and put his clothing on him, and took him away to put him on the cross.
32 And while they were coming out, they saw a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, and they made him go with them, so that he might take up his cross.
33 And when they came to the place named Golgotha, that is to say, Dead Man's Head,
34 They gave him wine mixed with bitter drink: and after tasting it, he took no more.
35 And when they had put him on the cross, they made division of his clothing among them by the decision of chance.
36 And they were seated there watching him.
37 And they put up over his head the statement of his crime in writing, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
38 Then two thieves were put on crosses with him, one on the right and one on the left.
39 And those who went by said bitter words to him, shaking their heads and saying,
40 You who would give the Temple to destruction and put it up again in three days, get yourself free: if you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.
41 In the same way, the chief priests, making sport of him, with the scribes and those in authority, said,
42 A saviour of others, he has no salvation for himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will have faith in him.
43 He put his faith in God; let God be his saviour now, if he will have him; for he said, I am the Son of God.
44 And the thieves who were on the crosses said evil words to him.
45 Now from the sixth hour it was dark over all the land till the ninth hour.
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus gave a loud cry, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why are you turned away from me?
47 And some of those who were near by, hearing it, said, This man is crying to Elijah.
48 And straight away one of them went quickly, and took a sponge, and made it full of bitter wine, and put it on a rod and gave him drink.
49 And the rest said, Let him be; let us see if Elijah will come to his help.
50 And Jesus gave another loud cry, and gave up his spirit.
51 And the curtain of the Temple was parted in two from end to end; and there was an earth-shock; and the rocks were broken;
52 And the resting-places of the dead came open; and the bodies of a number of sleeping saints came to life;
53 And coming out of their resting-places, after he had come again from the dead, they went into the holy town and were seen by a number of people.
54 Now the captain and those who were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earth-shock and the things which were done, were in great fear and said, Truly this was a son of God.
55 And a number of women were there, watching from a distance, who had come with Jesus from Galilee, waiting on his needs.
56 Among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary, the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
57 And in the evening, there came a man of wealth from Arimathaea, Joseph by name, who was a disciple of Jesus:
58 This man went in to Pilate, and made a request for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate gave orders for it to be given to him.
59 And Joseph took the body, folding it in clean linen,
60 And put it in the resting-place which had been cut out of the rock for himself; and after rolling a great stone to the door of it he went away.
61 And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, seated by the place of the dead.
62 Now on the day after the getting ready of the Passover, the chief priests and Pharisees came together to Pilate,
63 Saying, Sir, we have in mind how that false man said, while he was still living, After three days I will come again from the dead.
64 Give orders, then, that the place where his body is may be made safe till the third day, for fear that his disciples come and take him away secretly and say to the people, He has come back from the dead: and the last error will be worse than the first.
65 Pilate said to them, You have watchmen; go and make it as safe as you are able.
66 So they went, and made safe the place where his body was, putting a stamp on the stone, and the watchmen were with them.

Commentary on Matthew 27 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 27
It is a very affecting story which is recorded in this chapter concerning the sufferings and death of our Lord Jesus. Considering the thing itself, there cannot be a more tragical story told us; common humanity would melt the heart, to find an innocent and excellent person thus misused. But considering the design and fruit of Christ's sufferings, it is gospel, it is good news, that Jesus Christ was thus delivered for our offences; and there is nothing we have more reason to glory in than the cross of Christ. In this chapter, observe,
Mat 27:1-10
We left Christ in the hands of the chief priests and elders, condemned to die, but they could only show their teeth; about two years before this the Romans had taken from the Jews the power of capital punishment; they could put no man to death, and therefore early in the morning another council is held, to consider what is to be done. And here we are told what was done in that morning-council, after they had been for two or three hours consulting with their pillows.
Now, in this story,
This buying of the potter's field did not take place on the day that Christ died (they were then too busy to mind any thing else but hunting him down); but it took place not long after; for Peter speaks of it soon after Christ's ascension; yet it is here recorded.
The giving of the price of him that was valued, not for him, but for the potter's field, bespeaks,
Mat 27:11-25
We have here an account of what passed in Pilate's judgment-hall, when the blessed Jesus was brought thither betimes in the morning. Though it was no court-day, Pilate immediately took his case before him. We have there,
Now,
The reason why Pilate laboured thus to get Jesus discharged was because he knew that for envy the chief priests had delivered him up (v. 18); that it was not his guilt, but his goodness, that they were provoked at; and for this reason he hoped to bring him off by the people's act, and that they would be for his release. When David was envied by Saul, he was the darling of the people; and any one that heard the hosannas with which Christ was but a few days ago brought into Jerusalem, would have thought that he had been so, and that Pilate might safely have referred this matter to the commonalty, especially when so notorious a rogue was set up as a rival with him for their favours. But it proved otherwise.
Now, as to this demand, we are further told,
Now Pilate endeavours to clear himself from the guilt,
Mat 27:26-32
In these verses we have the preparatives for, and prefaces to, the crucifixion of our Lord Jesus. Here is,
When he was delivered to be crucified, that was enough; they that kill the body, yield that there is no more that they can do, but Christ's enemies will do more, and, if it be possible, wrap up a thousand deaths in one. Though Pilate pronounced him innocent, yet his soldiers, his guards, set themselves to abuse him, being swayed more by the fury of the people against him, than by their master's testimony for him; the Jewish rabble infected the Roman soldiery, or perhaps it was not so much in spite to him, as to make sport for themselves, that they thus abused him. They understood that he pretended to a crown; to taunt him with that gave them some diversion, and an opportunity to make themselves and one another merry. Note, It is an argument of a base, servile, sordid spirit, to insult over those that are in misery, and to make the calamities of any matter of sport and merriment.
Observe,
Mat 27:33-49
We have here the crucifixion of our Lord Jesus.
Two things the priests and elders upbraided him with.
Well, thus our Lord Jesus having undertaken to satisfy the justice of God for the wrong done him in his honour by sin, he did it by suffering in his honour; not only by divesting himself of that which was due to him as the Son of God, but by submitting to the utmost indignity that could be done to the worst of men; because he was made sin for us, he was thus made a curse for us, to make reproach easy to us, if at any time we suffer it, and have all manner of evil said against us falsely, for righteousness' sake.
Note,
Mat 27:50-56
We have here, at length, an account of the death of Christ, and several remarkable passages that attended it.
Two things are here noted concerning the manner of Christ's dying.
Mat 27:57-66
We have here an account of Christ's burial, and the manner and circumstances of it, concerning which observe,
