1 Chronicles 13:1-14 King James Version with Strong's Concordance (STRONG)

1 And David H1732 consulted H3289 with the captains H8269 of thousands H505 and hundreds, H3967 and with every leader. H5057

2 And David H1732 said H559 unto all the congregation H6951 of Israel, H3478 If it seem good H2895 unto you, and that it be of the LORD H3068 our God, H430 let us send H7971 abroad H6555 unto our brethren H251 every where, that are left H7604 in all the land H776 of Israel, H3478 and with them also to the priests H3548 and Levites H3881 which are in their cities H5892 and suburbs, H4054 that they may gather H6908 themselves unto us:

3 And let us bring again H5437 the ark H727 of our God H430 to us: for we enquired H1875 not at it in the days H3117 of Saul. H7586

4 And all the congregation H6951 said H559 that they would do so: H6213 for the thing H1697 was right H3474 in the eyes H5869 of all the people. H5971

5 So David H1732 gathered H6950 all Israel H3478 together, H6950 from Shihor H7883 of Egypt H4714 even unto the entering H935 of Hemath, H2574 to bring H935 the ark H727 of God H430 from Kirjathjearim. H7157

6 And David H1732 went up, H5927 and all Israel, H3478 to Baalah, H1173 that is, to Kirjathjearim, H7157 which belonged to Judah, H3063 to bring up H5927 thence the ark H727 of God H430 the LORD, H3068 that dwelleth H3427 between the cherubims, H3742 whose name H8034 is called H7121 on it.

7 And they carried H7392 the ark H727 of God H430 in a new H2319 cart H5699 out of the house H1004 of Abinadab: H41 and Uzza H5798 and Ahio H283 drave H5090 the cart. H5699

8 And David H1732 and all Israel H3478 played H7832 before H6440 God H430 with all their might, H5797 and with singing, H7892 and with harps, H3658 and with psalteries, H5035 and with timbrels, H8596 and with cymbals, H4700 and with trumpets. H2689

9 And when they came H935 unto the threshingfloor H1637 of Chidon, H3592 Uzza H5798 put forth H7971 his hand H3027 to hold H270 the ark; H727 for the oxen H1241 stumbled. H8058

10 And the anger H639 of the LORD H3068 was kindled H2734 against Uzza, H5798 and he smote H5221 him, because he put H7971 his hand H3027 to the ark: H727 and there he died H4191 before H6440 God. H430

11 And David H1732 was displeased, H2734 because the LORD H3068 had made H6555 a breach H6556 upon Uzza: H5798 wherefore that place H4725 is called H7121 Perezuzza H6560 to this day. H3117

12 And David H1732 was afraid H3372 of God H430 that day, H3117 saying, H559 How H1963 shall I bring H935 the ark H727 of God H430 home to me?

13 So David H1732 brought H5493 not the ark H727 home to himself to the city H5892 of David, H1732 but carried it aside H5186 into the house H1004 of Obededom H5654 the Gittite. H1663

14 And the ark H727 of God H430 remained H3427 with the family H1004 of Obededom H5654 in his house H1004 three H7969 months. H2320 And the LORD H3068 blessed H1288 the house H1004 of Obededom, H5654 and all that he had.

Commentary on 1 Chronicles 13 John Gill's Exposition of the Bible

Introduction

INTRODUCTION TO 1 CHRONICLES 13

The contents of this chapter are the same with 2 Samuel 6:1, only David's consultation with the principal men of Israel concerning the affair herein transacted is premised in the first four verses of this.

Verse 1

And David consulted with the captains of thousands, and hundreds, and with every leader. With the chiliarchs and centurions, and every officer in that large body of armed men in every tribe, who met to make and crown him king: for at that time was this consultation had, and therefore is connected with it; though the affair advised about was not yet done, as Dr. LightfootF8Works, vol. 1. p. 61,62. observes, and was not done until some considerable time afterwards. Advice being taken, the several officers went with their men to their respective countries, to meet again at a certain time and place to put the thing projected into execution; and between this and that time were Hiram's message to David on his accession to the throne, the taking of Jerusalem, and the two battles with the Philistines, as the same writer notes; most of which are recorded before this in the book of Samuel, and follow here.

Verse 2

And David said unto all the congregation of Israel,.... To the above persons, as representatives of it:

if it seem good unto you, and that it be of the Lord our God; if it could be thought by them a good and useful thing, and agreeable to the will of God, and would make for his glory:

let us send abroad unto our brethren everywhere that are left in all the land of Israel; that were not then present with them, even all the common people; whom David, though king, owns as his brethren; nor is his antitype ashamed to own this relation between him and his people, Hebrews 2:11.

and with them also to the priests and Levites which are in their cities and suburbs: given to them in the several tribes to dwell in, see 1 Chronicles 6:54,

that they may gather themselves unto us; at a certain time and place appointed.

Verse 3

And let us bring again the ark of our God to us,.... The symbol of the divine Presence, than which nothing was more desirable to David, and he chose to begin his reign overall Israel with it:

for we inquired not at it in the days of Saul; he being indifferent to religion, and careless about it, and the enjoyment of the presence of God, and having direction from him; and the people also content with worship at the tabernacle at Gibeah, though the token of the divine Presence was absent.

Verse 4

And all the congregation said that they would do so,.... They unanimously agreed to the motion:

for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people; they saw the propriety, necessity, and usefulness of it.

Verses 5-14

So David gathered all Israel together,.... The principal of them, even 30,000 select men, 2 Samuel 6:1.

from Shihor of Egypt; or the Nile of Egypt, as the Targum and other Jewish writers, called Shihor from the blackness of its water, see Jeremiah 2:18 though some think the river Rhinocurura is meant, which both lay to the south of the land of Israel:

even unto the entering of Hamath; which the Targum interprets of Antiochia, which lay to the north of the land; so that this collection of the people was made from south to north, the extreme borders of the land:

to bring the ark of God from Kirjathjearim; where it then was, and had been a long time, see 1 Samuel 7:1, from hence to the end of the chapter the account is the same with 2 Samuel 6:1, see the notes there; what little variations there are, are there observed. See Gill on 2 Samuel 6:1, 2 Samuel 6:2, 2 Samuel 6:3, 2 Samuel 6:4, 2 Samuel 6:5, 2 Samuel 6:6, 2 Samuel 6:7, 2 Samuel 6:8, 2 Samuel 6:9, 2 Samuel 6:10, 2 Samuel 6:11
