20 Brethren, G80 be G1096 not G3361 children G3813 in understanding: G5424 howbeit G235 in malice G2549 be ye children, G3515 but G1161 in understanding G5424 be G1096 men. G5046
For G2532 G1063 when for G1223 the time G5550 ye ought G3784 to be G1511 teachers, G1320 ye have G2192 need G5532 that one teach G1321 you G5209 again G3825 which G5101 be the first G746 principles G4747 of the oracles G3051 of God; G2316 and G2532 are become such as G1096 have G2192 need G5532 of milk, G1051 and G2532 not G3756 of strong G4731 meat. G5160 For G1063 every one G3956 that useth G3348 milk G1051 is unskilful G552 in the word G3056 of righteousness: G1343 for G1063 he is G2076 a babe. G3516
Therefore G1352 leaving G863 the principles G746 of the doctrine G3056 of Christ, G5547 let us go on G5342 unto G1909 perfection; G5047 not G3361 laying G2598 again G3825 the foundation G2310 of repentance G3341 from G575 dead G3498 works, G2041 and G2532 of faith G4102 toward G1909 God, G2316 Of the doctrine G1322 of baptisms, G909 and G5037 of laying on G1936 of hands, G5495 and G5037 of resurrection G386 of the dead, G3498 and G2532 of eternal G166 judgment. G2917 And G2532 this G5124 will we do, G4160 if G1437 G4007 God G2316 permit. G2010
[[A Song H7892 of degrees H4609 of David.]] H1732 LORD, H3068 my heart H3820 is not haughty, H1361 nor mine eyes H5869 lofty: H7311 neither do I exercise H1980 myself in great matters, H1419 or in things too high H6381 for me. Surely I have behaved H7737 and quieted H1826 myself, H5315 as a child that is weaned H1580 of his mother: H517 my soul H5315 is even as a weaned child. H1580
That G2443 we henceforth be G5600 no more G3371 children, G3516 tossed to and fro, G2831 and G2532 carried about with G4064 every G3956 wind G417 of doctrine, G1319 by G1722 the sleight G2940 of men, G444 and cunning craftiness, G1722 G3834 whereby G4314 they lie in wait G3180 to deceive; G4106 But G1161 speaking the truth G226 in G1722 love, G26 may grow up G837 into G1519 him G846 in all things, G3956 which G3739 is G2076 the head, G2776 even Christ: G5547
And G2532 I, G1473 brethren, G80 could G1410 not G3756 speak G2980 unto you G5213 as G5613 unto spiritual, G4152 but G235 as G5613 unto carnal, G4559 even as G5613 unto babes G3516 in G1722 Christ. G5547 I have fed G4222 you G5209 with milk, G1051 and G2532 not G3756 with meat: G1033 for G1063 hitherto G3768 ye were G1410 not G3768 able G1410 to bear it, neither G235 G3777 yet G2089 now G3568 are ye able. Commentary on 1 Corinthians 14 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 14
In this chapter the apostle directs them about the use of their spiritual gifts, preferring those that are best and fitted to do the greatest good.
1Cr 14:1-5
The apostle, in the foregoing chapter, had himself preferred, and advised the Corinthians to prefer, Christian charity to all spiritual gifts. Here he teaches them, among spiritual gifts, which they should prefer, and by what rules they should make comparison. He begins the chapter,
1Cr 14:6-14
In this paragraph he goes on to show how vain a thing the ostentation of speaking unknown and unintelligible language must be. It was altogether unedifying and unprofitable (v. 6): If I come to you speaking with tongues, what will it profit you, unless I speak to you by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? It would signify nothing to utter any of these in an unknown tongue. An apostle, with all his furniture, could not edify, unless he spoke to the capacity of his hearers. New revelations, the most clear explications of old ones, the most instructive discourses in themselves, would be unprofitable in a language not understood. Nay, interpretations of scripture made in an unknown tongue would need to be interpreted over again, before they could be of any use.
1Cr 14:15-20
The apostle here sums up the argument hitherto, and,
