17 For G1063 if G1487 I do G4238 this thing G5124 willingly, G1635 I have G2192 a reward: G3408 but G1161 if G1487 against my will, G210 a dispensation G3622 of the gospel is committed unto me. G4100
But G235 contrariwise, G5121 when they saw G1492 that G3754 the gospel G2098 of the uncircumcision G203 was committed unto me, G4100 as G2531 the gospel of the circumcision G4061 was unto Peter; G4074
Now G1161 he that planteth G5452 and G2532 he that watereth G4222 are G1526 one: G1520 and G1161 every man G1538 shall receive G2983 his own G2398 reward G3408 according G2596 to his own G2398 labour. G2873
If any man's G1536 work G2041 abide G3306 which G3739 he hath built G2026 thereupon, he shall receive G2983 a reward. G3408
He that receiveth G1209 a prophet G4396 in G1519 the name G3686 of a prophet G4396 shall receive G2983 a prophet's G4396 reward; G3408 and G2532 he that receiveth G2983 a righteous man G1342 in G1519 the name G3686 of a righteous man G1342 shall receive G1209 a righteous man's G1342 reward. G3408
For G1063 though G1437 I preach the gospel, G2097 I G3427 have G2076 nothing G3756 to glory of: G2745 for G1063 necessity G318 is laid upon G1945 me; G3427 yea, G1161 woe G3759 is G2076 unto me, G3427 if G3362 I preach G2097 not G3362 the gospel! G2097
Feed G4165 the flock G4168 of God G2316 which is among G1722 you, G5213 taking the oversight G1983 thereof, not G3361 by constraint, G317 but G235 willingly; G1596 not G3366 for filthy lucre, G147 but G235 of a ready mind; G4290 Neither G3366 as G5613 being lords over G2634 God's heritage, G2819 but G235 being G1096 ensamples G5179 to the flock. G4168 And G2532 when the chief Shepherd G750 shall appear, G5319 ye shall receive G2865 a crown G4735 of glory G1391 that fadeth not away. G262
According G2596 to the glorious G1391 gospel G2098 of the blessed G3107 God, G2316 which G3739 was committed to G4100 my G1473 trust. G4100 And G2532 I thank G2192 G5485 Christ G5547 Jesus G2424 our G2257 Lord, G2962 who G3588 hath enabled G1743 me, G3165 for G3754 that he counted G2233 me G3165 faithful, G4103 putting me G5087 into G1519 the ministry; G1248 Who G3588 was G5607 before G4386 a blasphemer, G989 and G2532 a persecutor, G1376 and G2532 injurious: G5197 but G235 I obtained mercy, G1653 because G3754 I did G4160 it ignorantly G50 in G1722 unbelief. G570
But G235 as G2531 we were allowed G1381 of G5259 God G2316 to be put in trust G4100 with the gospel, G2098 even so G3779 we speak; G2980 not G3756 as G5613 pleasing G700 men, G444 but G235 God, G2316 which trieth G1381 our G2257 hearts. G2588
The one G3303 preach G2605 Christ G5547 of G1537 contention, G2052 not G3756 sincerely, G55 supposing G3633 to add G2018 affliction G2347 to my G3450 bonds: G1199 But G1161 the other of G1537 love, G26 knowing G1492 that G3754 I am set G2749 for G1519 the defence G627 of the gospel. G2098
If G1489 ye have heard G191 of the dispensation G3622 of the grace G5485 of God G2316 which G3588 is given G1325 me G3427 to G1519 you-ward: G5209 How that G3754 by G2596 revelation G602 he made known G1107 unto me G3427 the mystery; G3466 (as G2531 I wrote afore G4270 in G1722 few words, G3641 Whereby, G4314 G3739 when ye read, G314 ye may G1410 understand G3539 my G3450 knowledge G4907 in G1722 the mystery G3466 of Christ) G5547 Which G3739 in G1722 other G2087 ages G1074 was G1107 not G3756 made known G1107 unto the sons G5207 of men, G444 as G5613 it is G601 now G3568 revealed G601 unto his G846 holy G40 apostles G652 and G2532 prophets G4396 by G1722 the Spirit; G4151 That the Gentiles G1484 should be G1511 fellowheirs, G4789 and G2532 of the same body, G4954 and G2532 partakers G4830 of his G846 promise G1860 in G1722 Christ G5547 by G1223 the gospel: G2098 Whereof G3739 I was made G1096 a minister, G1249 according G2596 to the gift G1431 of the grace G5485 of God G2316 given G1325 unto me G3427 by G2596 the effectual working G1753 of his G846 power. G1411 Unto me, G1698 who am less than the least G1647 of all G3956 saints, G40 is G1325 this G3778 grace G5485 given, G1325 that I should preach G2097 among G1722 the Gentiles G1484 the unsearchable G421 riches G4149 of Christ; G5547
For G1063 if there G1487 be first G4295 a willing mind, G4288 it is accepted G2144 according to G2526 that G1437 a man G5100 hath, G2192 and not G3756 according to that G2526 he hath G2192 not. G3756
And he said, H559 O H994 my Lord, H136 send, H7971 I pray thee, by the hand H3027 of him whom thou wilt send. H7971 And the anger H639 of the LORD H3068 was kindled H2734 against Moses, H4872 and he said, H559 Is not Aaron H175 the Levite H3881 thy brother? H251 I know H3045 that he can speak H1696 well. H1696 And also, behold, he cometh forth H3318 to meet H7125 thee: and when he seeth H7200 thee, he will be glad H8055 in his heart. H3820
And G1161 the Lord G2962 said, G2036 Who G5101 then G686 is G2076 that faithful G4103 and G2532 wise G5429 steward, G3623 whom G3739 his lord G2962 shall make ruler G2525 over G1909 his G846 household, G2322 to give G1325 them their portion of meat G4620 in G1722 due season? G2540
Who is there even among you that would shut H5462 the doors H1817 for nought? neither do ye kindle H215 fire on mine altar H4196 for nought. H2600 I have no pleasure H2656 in you, saith H559 the LORD H3068 of hosts, H6635 neither will I accept H7521 an offering H4503 at your hand. H3027
But it displeased H3415 Jonah H3124 exceedingly, H1419 H7451 and he was very angry. H2734 And he prayed H6419 unto the LORD, H3068 and said, H559 I pray H577 thee, O LORD, H3068 was not this my saying, H1697 when I was yet in my country? H127 Therefore I fled H1272 before H6923 unto Tarshish: H8659 for I knew H3045 that thou art a gracious H2587 God, H410 and merciful, H7349 slow H750 to anger, H639 and of great H7227 kindness, H2617 and repentest H5162 thee of the evil. H7451 Therefore now, O LORD, H3068 take, H3947 I beseech thee, my life H5315 from me; for it is better H2896 for me to die H4194 than to live. H2416
But Jonah H3124 rose up H6965 to flee H1272 unto Tarshish H8659 from the presence H6440 of the LORD, H3068 and went down H3381 to Joppa; H3305 and he found H4672 a ship H591 going H935 to Tarshish: H8659 so he paid H5414 the fare H7939 thereof, and went down H3381 into it, to go H935 with them unto Tarshish H8659 from the presence H6440 of the LORD. H3068
Then I said, H559 I will not make mention H2142 of him, nor speak H1696 any more in his name. H8034 But his word was in mine heart H3820 as a burning H1197 fire H784 shut up H6113 in my bones, H6106 and I was weary H3811 with forbearing, H3557 and I could H3201 not stay.
But who am I, and what is my people, H5971 that we should be H6113 able H3581 to offer so willingly H5068 after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own H3027 have we given H5414 thee.
Then the people H5971 rejoiced, H8055 for that they offered willingly, H5068 because with perfect H8003 heart H3820 they offered willingly H5068 to the LORD: H3068 and David H1732 the king H4428 also rejoiced H8055 with great H1419 joy. H8057
The gold H2091 for things of gold, H2091 and the silver H3701 for things of silver, H3701 and for all manner of work H4399 to be made by the hands H3027 of artificers. H2796 And who then is willing H5068 to consecrate H4390 his service H3027 this day H3117 unto the LORD? H3068
And thou, Solomon H8010 my son, H1121 know H3045 thou the God H430 of thy father, H1 and serve H5647 him with a perfect H8003 heart H3820 and with a willing H2655 mind: H5315 for the LORD H3068 searcheth H1875 all hearts, H3824 and understandeth H995 all the imaginations H3336 of the thoughts: H4284 if thou seek H1875 him, he will be found H4672 of thee; but if thou forsake H5800 him, he will cast thee off H2186 for ever. Commentary on 1 Corinthians 9 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 9
In this chapter the apostle seems to answer some cavils against himself.
1Cr 9:1-2
Blessed Paul, in the work of his ministry, not only met with opposition from those without, but discouragement from those within. He was under reproach; false brethren questioned his apostleship, and were very industrious to lessen his character and sink his reputation; particularly here at Corinth, a place to which he had been instrumental in doing much good, and from which he had deserved well; and yet there were those among them who upon these heads created him great uneasiness. Note, It is no strange nor new thing for a minister to meet with very unkind returns for great good-will to a people, and diligent and successful services among them. Some among the Corinthians questioned, if they did not disown, his apostolical character. To their cavils he here answers, and in such a manner as to set forth himself as a remarkable example of that self-denial, for the good of others, which he had been recommending in the former chapter. And,
1Cr 9:3-14
Having asserted his apostolical authority, he proceeds to claim the rights belonging to his office, especially that of being maintained by it.
1Cr 9:15-18
Here he tells them that he had, notwithstanding, waived his privilege, and lays down his reason for doing it.
1Cr 9:19-23
The apostle takes occasion from what he had before discoursed to mention some other instances of his self-denial and parting with his liberty for the benefit of others.
1Cr 9:24-27
In these verses the apostle hints at the great encouragement he had to act in this manner. He had a glorious prize, an incorruptible crown, in view. Upon this head he compares himself to the racers and combatants in the Isthmian games, an allusion well known to the Corinthians, because they were celebrated in their neighbourhood: "Know you not that those who run in a race run all, but one obtaineth the prize? v. 24. All run at your games, but only one gets the race and wins the crown.' And here,
