6 And he looked, H5027 and, behold, there was a cake H5692 baken on the coals, H7529 and a cruse H6835 of water H4325 at his head. H4763 And he did eat H398 and drink, H8354 and laid him down H7901 again. H7725
Arise, H6965 get H3212 thee to Zarephath, H6886 which belongeth to Zidon, H6721 and dwell H3427 there: behold, I have commanded H6680 a widow H490 woman H802 there to sustain H3557 thee. So he arose H6965 and went H3212 to Zarephath. H6886 And when he came H935 to the gate H6607 of the city, H5892 behold, the widow H490 woman H802 was there gathering H7197 of sticks: H6086 and he called H7121 to her, and said, H559 Fetch H3947 me, I pray thee, a little H4592 water H4325 in a vessel, H3627 that I may drink. H8354 And as she was going H3212 to fetch H3947 it, he called H7121 to her, and said, H559 Bring H3947 me, I pray thee, a morsel H6595 of bread H3899 in thine hand. H3027 And she said, H559 As the LORD H3068 thy God H430 liveth, H2416 I have H3426 not a cake, H4580 but an handful H4393 H3709 of meal H7058 in a barrel, H3537 and a little H4592 oil H8081 in a cruse: H6835 and, behold, I am gathering H7197 two H8147 sticks, H6086 that I may go in H935 and dress H6213 it for me and my son, H1121 that we may eat H398 it, and die. H4191 And Elijah H452 said H559 unto her, Fear H3372 not; go H935 and do H6213 as thou hast said: H1697 but make H6213 me thereof H8033 a little H6996 cake H5692 first, H7223 and bring H3318 it unto me, and after H314 make H6213 for thee and for thy son. H1121 For thus saith H559 the LORD H3068 God H430 of Israel, H3478 The barrel H3537 of meal H7058 shall not waste, H3615 neither shall the cruse H6835 of oil H8081 fail, H2637 until the day H3117 that the LORD H3068 sendeth H5414 rain H1653 upon H6440 the earth. H127 And she went H3212 and did H6213 according to the saying H1697 of Elijah: H452 and she, and he, and her house, H1004 did eat H398 many days. H3117
I have compassion G4697 on G1909 the multitude, G3793 because G3754 they have G4357 now G2235 been G4357 with me G3427 three G5140 days, G2250 and G2532 have G2192 nothing G3756 G5101 to eat: G5315 And G2532 if G1437 I send G630 them G846 away G630 fasting G3523 to G1519 their own G846 houses, G3624 they will faint G1590 by G1722 the way: G3598 for G1063 divers G5100 of them G846 came G2240 from far. Commentary on 1 Kings 19 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 19
We left Elijah at the entrance of Jezreel, still appearing publicly, and all the people's eyes upon him. In this chapter we have him again absconding, and driven into obscurity, at a time when he could ill be spared; but we are to look upon it as a punishment to Israel for the insincerity and inconstancy of their reformation. When people will not learn it is just with God to remove their teachers into corners. Now observe,
1Ki 19:1-8
One would have expected, after such a public and sensible manifestation of the glory of God and such a clear decision of the controversy depending between him and Baal, to the honour of Elijah, the confusion of Baal's prophets, and the universal satisfaction of the people-after they had seen both fire and water come from heaven at the prayer of Elijah, and both in mercy to them, the one as it signified the acceptance of their offering, the other as it refreshed their inheritance, which was weary-that now they would all, as one man, return to the worship of the God of Israel and take Elijah for their guide and oracle, that he would thenceforward be prime-minister of state, and his directions would be as laws both to king and kingdom. But it is quite otherwise; he is neglected whom God honoured; no respect is paid to him, nor care taken of him, nor any use made of him, but, on the contrary, the land of Israel, to which he had been, and might have been, so great a blessing, is now made too hot for him.
1Ki 19:9-18
Here is,
1Ki 19:19-21
Elisha was named last in the orders God gave to Elijah, but he was first called, for by him the other two were to be called. He must come in Elijah's room; yet Elijah is forward to raise him, and is far from being jealous of his successor, but rejoices to think that he shall leave the work of God in such good hands. Concerning the call of Elisha observe,
