11 And it came to pass, when all that knew H3045 him beforetime H865 H8032 saw H7200 that, behold, he prophesied H5012 among the prophets, H5030 then the people H5971 said H559 one H376 to another, H7453 What is this that is come unto the son H1121 of Kish? H7027 Is Saul H7586 also among the prophets? H5030
And he stripped off H6584 his clothes H899 also, H1571 and prophesied H5012 before H6440 Samuel H8050 in like manner, and lay down H5307 naked H6174 all that day H3117 and all that night. H3915 Wherefore they say, H559 Is Saul H7586 also among the prophets? H5030
And G2532 the Jews G2453 marvelled, G2296 saying, G3004 How G4459 knoweth G1492 this man G3778 letters, G1121 having G3129 never G3361 learned? G3129
And G2532 when he was come G2064 into G1519 his own G846 country, G3968 he taught G1321 them G846 in G1722 their G846 synagogue, G4864 insomuch that G5620 they G846 were astonished, G1605 and G2532 said, G3004 Whence G4159 hath this man G5129 this G3778 wisdom, G4678 and G2532 these mighty works? G1411 Is G2076 not G3756 this G3778 the carpenter's G5045 son? G5207 is G3004 not G3780 his G846 mother G3384 called G3004 Mary? G3137 and G2532 his G846 brethren, G80 James, G2385 and G2532 Joses, G2500 and G2532 Simon, G4613 and G2532 Judas? G2455
The neighbours G1069 therefore, G3767 and G2532 they which before G4386 had seen G2334 him G846 that G3754 he was G2258 blind, G5185 said, G3004 Is G2076 not G3756 this G3778 he that sat G2521 and G2532 begged? G4319 Some G243 said, G3004 G3754 This G3778 is he: G2076 G1161 others G243 said, G3754 He is G2076 like G3664 him: G846 but he G1565 said, G3004 G3754 I G1473 am G1510 he.
And G1161 they were G1839 all G3956 amazed G1839 and G2532 marvelled, G2296 saying G3004 one to another, G4314 G240 Behold, G2400 are G1526 not G3756 all G3956 these G3778 which G3588 speak G2980 Galilaeans? G1057 And G2532 how G4459 hear G191 we G2249 every G1538 man in our G2257 own G2398 tongue, G1258 wherein G1722 G3739 we were born? G1080
And G5037 they knew G1921 that G3754 it G846 was G2258 he G3778 which G3588 sat G2521 for G4314 alms G1654 at G1909 the Beautiful G5611 gate G4439 of the temple: G2411 and G2532 they were filled G4130 with wonder G2285 and G2532 amazement G1611 at G1909 that which had happened G4819 unto him. G846
Now G1161 when they saw G2334 the boldness G3954 of Peter G4074 and G2532 John, G2491 and G2532 perceived G2638 that G3754 they were G1526 unlearned G62 and G2532 ignorant G2399 men, G444 they marvelled; G2296 and G5037 they took knowledge G1921 of them, G846 that G3754 they had been G2258 with G4862 Jesus. G2424
But G1161 all G3956 that heard G191 him were amazed, G1839 and G2532 said; G3004 Is G2076 not G3756 this G3778 he that destroyed G4199 them which G3588 called on G1941 this G5124 name G3686 in G1722 Jerusalem, G2419 and G2532 came G2064 hither G5602 for G1519 that G5124 intent, G1519 that G2443 he might bring G71 them G846 bound G1210 unto G1909 the chief priests? Commentary on 1 Samuel 10 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 10
We left Samuel and Saul walking together, probably some private way over the fields down from Ramah, perhaps in the paths of the vineyards, and Saul expecting to hear from Samuel the word of God. Now here we have,
1Sa 10:1-8
Samuel is here executing the office of a prophet, giving Saul full assurance from God that he should be king, as he was afterwards, according to these prophecies which went before of him.
1Sa 10:9-16
Saul has now taken his leave of Samuel, much amazed, we may well suppose, at what has been done to him, almost ready to question whether he be awake or no, and whether it be not all a dream. Now here we are told,
1Sa 10:17-27
Saul's nomination to the throne is here made public, in a general assembly of the elders of Israel, the representatives of their respective tribes at Mizpeh. It is probable that this convention of the states was called as soon as conveniently it might, after Saul was anointed, for, if there must be a change in their government, the sooner the better: it might be of bad consequence to be long in the doing. The people having met in a solemn assembly, in which God was in a peculiar manner present (and therefore it is said they were called together unto the Lord, v. 17), Samuel acts for God among them.
