1 And it came to pass in those days, H3117 that the Philistines H6430 gathered H6908 their armies H4264 together H6908 for warfare, H6635 to fight H3898 with Israel. H3478 And Achish H397 said H559 unto David, H1732 Know H3045 thou assuredly, H3045 that thou shalt go out H3318 with me to battle, H4264 thou and thy men. H582
Now the Philistines H6430 gathered together H6908 all their armies H4264 to Aphek: H663 and the Israelites H3478 pitched H2583 by a fountain H5869 which is in Jezreel. H3157 And the lords H5633 of the Philistines H6430 passed on H5674 by hundreds, H3967 and by thousands: H505 but David H1732 and his men H582 passed on H5674 in the rereward H314 with Achish. H397 Then said H559 the princes H8269 of the Philistines, H6430 What do these Hebrews H5680 here? And Achish H397 said H559 unto the princes H8269 of the Philistines, H6430 Is not this David, H1732 the servant H5650 of Saul H7586 the king H4428 of Israel, H3478 which hath been with me these days, H3117 or these years, H8141 and I have found H4672 no fault H3972 in him since H3117 he fell H5307 unto me unto this day? H3117
Now these are the nations H1471 which the LORD H3068 left, H3240 to prove H5254 Israel H3478 by them, even as many of Israel as had not known H3045 all the wars H4421 of Canaan; H3667 Only that H7535 the generations H1755 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 might know, H3045 to teach H3925 them war, H4421 at the least such as before H6440 knew H3045 nothing thereof; Namely, five H2568 lords H5633 of the Philistines, H6430 and all the Canaanites, H3669 and the Sidonians, H6722 and the Hivites H2340 that dwelt H3427 in mount H2022 Lebanon, H3844 from mount H2022 Baalhermon H1179 unto the entering in H935 of Hamath. H2574 And they were to prove H5254 Israel H3478 by them, to know H3045 whether they would hearken H8085 unto the commandments H4687 of the LORD, H3068 which he commanded H6680 their fathers H1 by the hand H3027 of Moses. Commentary on 1 Samuel 28 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 28
Preparations are herein making for that war which will put an end to the life and reign of Saul, and so make way for David to the throne. In this war,
1Sa 28:1-6
Here is,
1Sa 28:7-14
Here,
1Sa 28:15-19
We have here the conference between Saul and Satan. Saul came in disguise (v. 8), but Satan soon discovered him, v. 12. Satan comes in disguise, in the disguise of Samuel's mantle, and Saul cannot discover him. Such is the disadvantage we labour under, in wrestling with the rulers of the darkness of this world, that they know us, while we are ignorant of their wiles and devices.
1Sa 28:20-25
We are here told how Saul received this terrible message from the ghost he consulted. He desired to be told what he should do (v. 15), but was only told what he had not done and what should be done to him. Those that expect any good counsel or comfort otherwise than from God, and in the way of his institutions, will be as wretchedly disappointed as Saul here was. Observe,
