17 But G1161 we, G2249 brethren, G80 being taken G642 from G575 you G5216 for G4314 a short G5610 time G2540 in presence, G4383 not G3756 in heart, G2588 endeavoured G4704 the more abundantly G4056 to see G1492 your G5216 face G4383 with G1722 great G4183 desire. G1939
For G1063 though G1499 I be absent G548 in the flesh, G4561 yet G235 am I G1510 with G4862 you G5213 in the spirit, G4151 joying G5463 and G2532 beholding G991 your G5216 order, G5010 and G2532 the stedfastness G4733 of your G5216 faith G4102 in G1519 Christ. G5547
For G1063 I G1473 verily, G3303 as G5613 absent G548 in body, G4983 but G1161 present G3918 in spirit, G4151 have judged G2919 already, G2235 as G5613 though I were present, G3918 concerning him that hath G2716 so G3779 done G2716 this deed, G5124
But G1161 now G737 when Timotheus G5095 came G2064 from G575 you G5216 unto G4314 us, G2248 and G2532 brought G2097 us G2254 good tidings G2097 of your G5216 faith G4102 and G2532 charity, G26 and G2532 that G3754 ye have G2192 good G18 remembrance G3417 of us G2257 always, G3842 desiring greatly G1971 to see G1492 us, G2248 as G2509 we G2249 also G2532 to see you: G5209
Now G1161 I would G2309 not G3756 have G50 you G5209 ignorant, G50 brethren, G80 that G3754 oftentimes G4178 I purposed G4388 to come G2064 unto G4314 you, G5209 (but G2532 was let G2967 hitherto,) G891 G1204 that G2443 I might have G2192 some G5100 fruit G2590 among G1722 you G5213 also, G2532 even as G2531 G2532 among G1722 other G3062 Gentiles. G1484
And Israel H3478 said H559 unto Joseph, H3130 I had not thought H6419 to see H7200 thy face: H6440 and, lo, God H430 hath shewed H7200 me also thy seed. H2233
And the soul of king H4428 David H1732 longed H3615 to go forth H3318 unto Absalom: H53 for he was comforted H5162 concerning Amnon, H550 seeing he was dead. H4191
And he said H559 unto him, Went H1980 not mine heart H3820 with thee, when the man H376 turned H2015 again from his chariot H4818 to meet H7125 thee? Is it a time H6256 to receive H3947 money, H3701 and to receive H3947 garments, H899 and oliveyards, H2132 and vineyards, H3754 and sheep, H6629 and oxen, H1241 and menservants, H5650 and maidservants? H8198
[[A Psalm H4210 of David, H1732 when he was in the wilderness H4057 of Judah.]] H3063 O God, H430 thou art my God; H410 early will I seek H7836 thee: my soul H5315 thirsteth H6770 for thee, my flesh H1320 longeth H3642 for thee in a dry H6723 and thirsty H5889 land, H776 where no H1097 water H4325 is;
But G1161 now G3570 having G2192 no more G3371 place G5117 in G1722 these G575 G5125 parts, G2824 and G1161 having G2192 a great desire G1974 these many G4183 years G2094 to come G2064 unto G4314 you; G5209
But G1161 if G1487 I live G2198 in G1722 the flesh, G4561 this G5124 is the fruit G2590 of my labour: G2041 G3427 yet G2532 what G5101 I shall choose G138 I wot G1107 not. G3756 For G1063 I am in a strait G4912 betwixt G1537 two, G1417 having G2192 a desire G1939 to G1519 depart, G360 and G2532 to be G1511 with G4862 Christ; G5547 which is far G4183 G3123 better: G2908 Nevertheless G1161 to abide G1961 in G1722 the flesh G4561 is more needful G316 for G1223 you. G5209 And G2532 having this G5124 confidence, G3982 I know G1492 that G3754 I shall abide G3306 and G2532 continue G4839 with you G5213 all G3956 for G1519 your G5216 furtherance G4297 and G2532 joy G5479 of faith; G4102 That G2443 your G5216 rejoicing G2745 may be more abundant G4052 in G1722 Jesus G2424 Christ G5547 for G1722 me G1698 by G1223 my G1699 coming G3952 to G4314 you G5209 again. G3825
Night G3571 and G2532 day G2250 praying G1189 exceedingly G1537 G4053 G5228 that G1519 we might see G1492 your G5216 face, G4383 and G2532 might perfect G2675 that which is lacking G5303 in your G5216 faith? G4102 Now G1161 God G2316 himself G846 and G2532 our G2257 Father, G3962 and G2532 our G2257 Lord G2962 Jesus G2424 Christ, G5547 direct G2720 our G2257 way G3598 unto G4314 you. G5209

Commentary on 1 Thessalonians 2 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 2
In this chapter the apostle puts the Thessalonians in mind of the manner of his preaching among them (v. 1-6). Then of the manner of his conversation among them (v. 7-12). Afterwards of the success of his ministry, with the effects both on himself and on them (v. 13-16), and then apologizes for his absence (v. 17-20).
1Th 2:1-6
Here we have an account of Paul's manner of preaching, and his comfortable reflection upon his entrance in among the Thessalonians. As he had the testimony of his own conscience witnessing to his integrity, so he could appeal to the Thessalonians how faithful he, and Silas, and Timotheus, his helpers in the work of the Lord, had discharged their office: You yourselves, brethren, know our entrance in unto you. Note, It is a great comfort to a minister to have his own conscience and the consciences of others witnessing for him that he set out well, with good designs and from good principles; and that his preaching was not in vain, or, as some read it, was not fain. The apostle here comforts himself either in the success of his ministry, that it was not fruitless or in vain (according to our translation), or as others think, reflecting upon the sincerity of his preaching, that it was not vain and empty, or deceitful and treacherous. The subject-matter of the apostle's preaching was not vain and idle speculations about useless niceties and foolish questions, but sound and solid truth, such as was most likely to profit his hearers. A good example this is, to be imitated by all the ministers of the gospel. Much less was the apostle's preaching vain or deceitful. He could say to these Thessalonians what he told the Corinthians (2 Co. 4:2): We have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully. He had no sinister or worldly design in his preaching, which he puts them in mind to have been,
1Th 2:7-12
In these words the apostle reminds the Thessalonians of the manner of his conversation among them. And,

Here observe,
1Th 2:17-20
In these words the apostle apologizes for his absence. Here observe,
The apostle here puts the Thessalonians in mind that though he could not come to them as yet, and though he should never be able to come to them, yet our Lord Jesus Christ will come, nothing shall hinder this. And further, when he shall come, all must appear in his presence, or before him. Ministers and people must all appear before him, and faithful people will be the glory and joy of faithful ministers in that great and glorious day.
