2 But G235 even G2532 after that we had suffered before, G4310 and G2532 were shamefully entreated, G5195 as G2531 ye know, G1492 at G1722 Philippi, G5375 we were bold G3955 in G1722 our G2257 God G2316 to speak G2980 unto G4314 you G5209 the gospel G2098 of God G2316 with G1722 much G4183 contention. G73
And G2532 the multitude G3793 rose up together G4911 against G2596 them: G846 and G2532 the magistrates G4755 rent off G4048 their G846 clothes, G2440 and commanded G2753 to beat G4463 them. And G5037 when they had laid G2007 many G4183 stripes G4127 upon them, G846 they cast G906 them into G1519 prison, G5438 charging G3853 the jailor G1200 to keep G5083 them G846 safely: G806 Who, G3739 having received G2983 such G5108 a charge, G3852 thrust G906 them G846 into G1519 the inner G2082 prison, G5438 and G2532 made G805 their G846 feet G4228 fast G805 in G1519 the stocks. G3586
And G1161 Paul, G3972 as G2596 his manner was, G1486 went in G1525 unto G4314 them, G846 and G2532 G1909 three G5140 sabbath G4521 days reasoned G1256 with them G846 out of G575 the scriptures, G1124 Opening G1272 and G2532 alleging, G3908 that G3754 Christ G5547 must needs G1163 have suffered, G3958 and G2532 risen again G450 from G1537 the dead; G3498 and G2532 that G3754 this G3778 Jesus, G2424 whom G3739 I G1473 preach G2605 unto you, G5213 is G2076 Christ. G5547 And G2532 some G5100 of G1537 them G846 believed, G3982 and G2532 consorted G4345 with Paul G3972 and G2532 Silas; G4609 and G5037 of the devout G4576 Greeks G1672 a great G4183 multitude, G4128 and G5037 of the chief G4413 women G1135 not G3756 a few. G3641 But G1161 the Jews G2453 which believed not, G544 moved with envy, G2206 G2532 took unto them G4355 certain G5100 lewd G4190 fellows G435 of the baser sort, G60 and G2532 gathered a company, G3792 and set all G2350 the city G4172 on an uproar, G2350 and G5037 assaulted G2186 the house G3614 of Jason, G2394 and sought G2212 to bring G71 them G846 out G1519 to the people. G1218 And G1161 when they found G2147 them G846 not, G3361 they drew G4951 Jason G2394 and G2532 certain G5100 brethren G80 unto G1909 the rulers of the city, G4173 crying, G994 G3754 These G3778 that have turned G387 the world G3625 upside down G387 are come G3918 hither G1759 also; G2532 Whom G3739 Jason G2394 hath received: G5264 and G2532 these G3778 all G3956 do G4238 contrary G561 to the decrees G1378 of Caesar, G2541 saying G3004 that there is G1511 another G2087 king, G935 one Jesus. G2424 And G1161 they troubled G5015 the people G3793 and G2532 the rulers of the city, G4173 when they heard G191 these things. G5023 And G2532 when they had taken G2983 security G2425 of G3844 Jason, G2394 and G2532 of the other, G3062 they let G630 them G846 go. G630
Only G3440 let your conversation be G4176 as it becometh G516 the gospel G2098 of Christ: G5547 that G2443 whether G1535 I come G2064 and G2532 see G1492 you, G5209 or G1535 else be absent, G548 I may hear G191 of your G5216 affairs, G4012 that G3754 ye stand fast G4739 in G1722 one G1520 spirit, G4151 with one G3391 mind G5590 striving together G4866 for the faith G4102 of the gospel; G2098 And G2532 in G1722 nothing G3367 G3361 terrified G4426 by G5259 your adversaries: G480 which G3748 is G2076 to them G846 G3303 an evident token G1732 of perdition, G684 but G1161 to you G5213 of salvation, G4991 and G2532 that G5124 of G575 God. G2316 For G3754 unto you G5213 it is given G5483 in the behalf G5228 of Christ, G5547 not G3756 only G3440 to believe G4100 on G1519 him, G846 but G235 also G2532 to suffer G3958 for G5228 his sake; G846 G5228 Having G2192 the same G846 conflict G73 which G3634 ye saw G1492 in G1722 me, G1698 and G2532 now G3568 hear G191 to be in G1722 me. G1698
Or G1535 unto governors, G2232 as G5613 unto them that are sent G3992 by G1223 him G846 for G1519 G3303 the punishment G1557 of evildoers, G2555 and G1161 for the praise G1868 of them that do well. G17 For G3754 so G3779 is G2076 the will G2307 of God, G2316 that with well doing G15 ye may put to silence G5392 the ignorance G56 of foolish G878 men: G444 As G5613 free, G1658 and G2532 not G3361 using G2192 your liberty G1657 for G5613 a cloke G1942 of maliciousness, G2549 but G235 as G5613 the servants G1401 of God. G2316
Looking G872 unto G1519 Jesus G2424 the author G747 and G2532 finisher G5051 of our faith; G4102 who G3739 for G473 the joy G5479 that was set before G4295 him G846 endured G5278 the cross, G4716 despising G2706 the shame, G152 and G5037 is set down G2523 at G1722 the right hand G1188 of the throne G2362 of God. G2316 For G1063 consider G357 him that endured G5278 such G5108 contradiction G485 of G5259 sinners G268 against G1519 himself, G846 lest G3363 ye be wearied G2577 and faint G1590 in your G5216 minds. G5590
And G1161 others G2087 had G2983 trial G3984 of cruel mockings G1701 and G2532 scourgings, G3148 yea, G1161 moreover G2089 of bonds G1199 and G2532 imprisonment: G5438 They were stoned, G3034 they were sawn asunder, G4249 were tempted, G3985 were slain G599 with G1722 the sword: G5408 G3162 they wandered about G4022 in G1722 sheepskins G3374 and G1722 goatskins; G122 G1192 being destitute, G5302 afflicted, G2346 tormented; G2558
And G2532 for G5228 me, G1700 that G2443 utterance G3056 may be given G1325 unto me, G3427 that I may open G1722 G457 my G3450 mouth G4750 boldly, G1722 G3954 to make known G1107 the mystery G3466 of the gospel, G2098 For G5228 which G3739 I am an ambassador G4243 in G1722 bonds: G254 that G2443 therein G1722 G846 I may speak boldly, G3955 as G5613 I G3165 ought G1163 to speak. G2980
And G2532 certain men G5100 which came down G2718 from G575 Judaea G2449 taught G1321 the brethren, G80 and said, G3754 Except G3362 ye be circumcised G4059 after the manner G1485 of Moses, G3475 ye cannot G3756 G1410 be saved. G4982 When therefore G3767 Paul G3972 and G2532 Barnabas G921 had G1096 no G3756 small G3641 dissension G4714 and G2532 disputation G4803 with G4314 them, G846 they determined G5021 that Paul G3972 and G2532 Barnabas, G921 and G2532 certain G5100 other G243 of G1537 them, G846 should go up G305 to G1519 Jerusalem G2419 unto G4314 the apostles G652 and G2532 elders G4245 about G4012 this G5127 question. G2213
Then G1161 there arose G450 certain G5100 of G1537 the synagogue, G4864 which G3588 is called G3004 the synagogue of the Libertines, G3032 and G2532 Cyrenians, G2956 and G2532 Alexandrians, G221 and G2532 of them of G575 Cilicia G2791 and G2532 of Asia, G773 disputing G4802 with Stephen. G4736 And G2532 they were G2480 not G3756 able G2480 to resist G436 the wisdom G4678 and G2532 the spirit G4151 by which G3739 he spake. G2980

Commentary on 1 Thessalonians 2 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 2
In this chapter the apostle puts the Thessalonians in mind of the manner of his preaching among them (v. 1-6). Then of the manner of his conversation among them (v. 7-12). Afterwards of the success of his ministry, with the effects both on himself and on them (v. 13-16), and then apologizes for his absence (v. 17-20).
1Th 2:1-6
Here we have an account of Paul's manner of preaching, and his comfortable reflection upon his entrance in among the Thessalonians. As he had the testimony of his own conscience witnessing to his integrity, so he could appeal to the Thessalonians how faithful he, and Silas, and Timotheus, his helpers in the work of the Lord, had discharged their office: You yourselves, brethren, know our entrance in unto you. Note, It is a great comfort to a minister to have his own conscience and the consciences of others witnessing for him that he set out well, with good designs and from good principles; and that his preaching was not in vain, or, as some read it, was not fain. The apostle here comforts himself either in the success of his ministry, that it was not fruitless or in vain (according to our translation), or as others think, reflecting upon the sincerity of his preaching, that it was not vain and empty, or deceitful and treacherous. The subject-matter of the apostle's preaching was not vain and idle speculations about useless niceties and foolish questions, but sound and solid truth, such as was most likely to profit his hearers. A good example this is, to be imitated by all the ministers of the gospel. Much less was the apostle's preaching vain or deceitful. He could say to these Thessalonians what he told the Corinthians (2 Co. 4:2): We have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully. He had no sinister or worldly design in his preaching, which he puts them in mind to have been,
1Th 2:7-12
In these words the apostle reminds the Thessalonians of the manner of his conversation among them. And,

1Th 2:17-20
In these words the apostle apologizes for his absence. Here observe,
The apostle here puts the Thessalonians in mind that though he could not come to them as yet, and though he should never be able to come to them, yet our Lord Jesus Christ will come, nothing shall hinder this. And further, when he shall come, all must appear in his presence, or before him. Ministers and people must all appear before him, and faithful people will be the glory and joy of faithful ministers in that great and glorious day.
