6 Nor G3777 of G1537 men G444 sought G2212 we glory, G1391 neither G3777 of G575 you, G5216 nor G3777 yet of G575 others, G243 when we might G1410 have been G1511 burdensome, G1722 G922 as G5613 the apostles G652 of Christ. G5547
Wherefore, G1352 though I might be G2192 much G4183 bold G3954 in G1722 Christ G5547 to enjoin G2004 thee G4671 that which is convenient, G433 Yet for G1223 love's G26 sake I G3870 rather G3123 beseech G3870 thee, being G5607 such an one G5108 as G5613 Paul G3972 the aged, G4246 and G1161 now G3570 also G2532 a prisoner G1198 of Jesus G2424 Christ. G5547
Am G1510 I not G3756 an apostle? G652 am G1510 I not G3756 free? G1658 have I not G3780 seen G3708 Jesus G2424 Christ G5547 our G2257 Lord? G2962 are G2075 not G3756 ye G5210 my G3450 work G2041 in G1722 the Lord? G2962 If G1487 I be G1510 not G3756 an apostle G652 unto others, G243 yet G235 doubtless G1065 I am G1510 to you: G5213 for G1063 the seal G4973 of mine G1699 apostleship G651 are G2075 ye G5210 in G1722 the Lord. G2962
For G3754 his letters, G1992 G3303 say they, G5346 are weighty G926 and G2532 powerful; G2478 but G1161 his bodily G4983 presence G3952 is weak, G772 and G2532 his speech G3056 contemptible. G1848 Let G3049 such an one G5108 think G3049 this, G5124 that, G3754 such as G3634 we are G2070 in word G3056 by G1223 letters G1992 when we are absent, G548 such G5108 will we be also G2532 in deed G2041 when we are present. G3918
For G3754 now G3568 we live, G2198 if G1437 ye G5210 stand fast G4739 in G1722 the Lord. G2962 For G1063 what G5101 thanks G2169 can we G1410 render G467 to God G2316 again G467 for G4012 you, G5216 for G1909 all G3956 the joy G5479 wherewith G3739 we joy G5463 for G1223 your sakes G5209 before G1715 our G2257 God; G2316
Now G1161 I G1473 Paul G3972 myself G846 beseech G3870 you G5209 by G1223 the meekness G4236 and G2532 gentleness G1932 of Christ, G5547 who G3739 in G2596 presence G4383 am base G3303 G5011 among G1722 you, G5213 but G1161 being absent G548 am bold G2292 toward G1519 you: G5209 But G1161 I beseech G1189 you, that I may not G3361 be bold G2292 when I am present G3918 with that confidence, G4006 wherewith G3739 I think G3049 to be bold G5111 against G1909 some, G5100 which G3588 think G3049 of us G2248 as G5613 if we walked G4043 according G2596 to the flesh. G4561
For G1063 G2532 by G1722 one G1520 Spirit G4151 are G907 we G2249 all G3956 baptized G907 into G1519 one G1520 body, G4983 whether G1535 we be Jews G2453 or G1535 Gentiles, G1672 whether G1535 we be bond G1401 or G1535 free; G1658 and G2532 have been G4222 all G3956 made to drink G4222 into G1519 one G1520 Spirit. G4151 G2532 For G1063 the body G4983 is G2076 not G3756 one G1520 member, G3196 but G235 many. G4183 If G1437 the foot G4228 shall say, G2036 Because G3754 I am G1510 not G3756 the hand, G5495 I am G1510 not G3756 of G1537 the body; G4983 is G2076 it therefore G3756 G3844 G5124 not G3756 of G1537 the body? G4983
If G1487 others G243 be partakers G3348 of this power G1849 over you, G5216 are not G3756 we G2249 rather? G3123 Nevertheless G235 we have G5530 not G3756 used G5530 this G5026 power; G1849 but G235 suffer G4722 all things, G3956 lest G3363 we should G1325 G5100 hinder G1464 the gospel G2098 of Christ. G5547 Do ye G1492 not G3756 know G1492 that G3754 they which minister G2038 about holy things G2413 live G2068 of the things of G1537 the temple? G2411 and they which wait G4332 at the altar G2379 are partakers G4829 with the altar? G2379 Even G2532 so G3779 hath G1299 the Lord G2962 ordained G1299 that they which preach G2605 the gospel G2098 should live G2198 of G1537 the gospel. G2098 But G1161 I G1473 have used G5530 none G3762 of these things: G5130 G1161 neither G3756 have I written G1125 these things, G5023 that G2443 it should be G1096 so G3779 done G1096 unto G1722 me: G1698 for G1063 it were better G3123 for me G3427 to die, G599 G2570 than G2228 that G2443 any man G5100 should make G2758 my G3450 glorying G2745 void. G2758 For G1063 though G1437 I preach the gospel, G2097 I G3427 have G2076 nothing G3756 to glory of: G2745 for G1063 necessity G318 is laid upon G1945 me; G3427 yea, G1161 woe G3759 is G2076 unto me, G3427 if G3362 I preach G2097 not G3362 the gospel! G2097 For G1063 if G1487 I do G4238 this thing G5124 willingly, G1635 I have G2192 a reward: G3408 but G1161 if G1487 against my will, G210 a dispensation G3622 of the gospel is committed unto me. G4100 What G5101 is G2076 my G3427 reward G3408 then? G3767 Verily that, G2443 when I preach the gospel, G2097 I may make G5087 the gospel G2098 of Christ G5547 without charge, G77 that G1519 I abuse G2710 not G3361 my G3450 power G1849 in G1722 the gospel. G2098
Have we G2192 not G3378 power G1849 to eat G5315 and G2532 to drink? G4095 Have we G2192 not G3378 power G1849 to lead about G4013 a sister, G79 a wife, G1135 as well as G5613 G2532 other G3062 apostles, G652 and G2532 as the brethren G80 of the Lord, G2962 and G2532 Cephas? G2786 Or G2228 I G1473 only G3441 and G2532 Barnabas, G921 have G2192 not G3756 we G2192 power G1849 to forbear G3361 working? G2038

Commentary on 1 Thessalonians 2 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 2
In this chapter the apostle puts the Thessalonians in mind of the manner of his preaching among them (v. 1-6). Then of the manner of his conversation among them (v. 7-12). Afterwards of the success of his ministry, with the effects both on himself and on them (v. 13-16), and then apologizes for his absence (v. 17-20).
1Th 2:1-6
Here we have an account of Paul's manner of preaching, and his comfortable reflection upon his entrance in among the Thessalonians. As he had the testimony of his own conscience witnessing to his integrity, so he could appeal to the Thessalonians how faithful he, and Silas, and Timotheus, his helpers in the work of the Lord, had discharged their office: You yourselves, brethren, know our entrance in unto you. Note, It is a great comfort to a minister to have his own conscience and the consciences of others witnessing for him that he set out well, with good designs and from good principles; and that his preaching was not in vain, or, as some read it, was not fain. The apostle here comforts himself either in the success of his ministry, that it was not fruitless or in vain (according to our translation), or as others think, reflecting upon the sincerity of his preaching, that it was not vain and empty, or deceitful and treacherous. The subject-matter of the apostle's preaching was not vain and idle speculations about useless niceties and foolish questions, but sound and solid truth, such as was most likely to profit his hearers. A good example this is, to be imitated by all the ministers of the gospel. Much less was the apostle's preaching vain or deceitful. He could say to these Thessalonians what he told the Corinthians (2 Co. 4:2): We have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully. He had no sinister or worldly design in his preaching, which he puts them in mind to have been,
1Th 2:7-12
In these words the apostle reminds the Thessalonians of the manner of his conversation among them. And,
1Th 2:13-16
Here observe,
1Th 2:17-20
In these words the apostle apologizes for his absence. Here observe,
The apostle here puts the Thessalonians in mind that though he could not come to them as yet, and though he should never be able to come to them, yet our Lord Jesus Christ will come, nothing shall hinder this. And further, when he shall come, all must appear in his presence, or before him. Ministers and people must all appear before him, and faithful people will be the glory and joy of faithful ministers in that great and glorious day.
