2 And G2532 sent G3992 Timotheus, G5095 our G2257 brother, G80 and G2532 minister G1249 of God, G2316 and G2532 our G2257 fellowlabourer G4904 in G1722 the gospel G2098 of Christ, G5547 to G1519 establish G4741 you, G5209 and G2532 to comfort G3870 you G5209 concerning G4012 your G5216 faith: G4102
Confirming G1991 the souls G5590 of the disciples, G3101 and exhorting them G3870 to continue G1696 in the faith, G4102 and G2532 that G3754 we G2248 must G1163 through G1223 much G4183 tribulation G2347 enter G1525 into G1519 the kingdom G932 of God. G2316 And G1161 when they had ordained G5500 them G846 elders G4245 in every G2596 church, G1577 and had prayed G4336 with G3326 fasting, G3521 they commended G3908 them G846 to the Lord, G2962 on G1519 whom G3739 they believed. G4100
But G1161 that G2443 ye G5210 also G2532 may know G1492 my G1691 affairs, G2596 and how G5101 I do, G4238 Tychicus, G5190 a beloved G27 brother G80 and G2532 faithful G4103 minister G1249 in G1722 the Lord, G2962 shall make known G1107 to you G5213 all things: G3956 Whom G3739 I have sent G3992 unto G4314 you G5209 for G1519 the same G846 purpose, G5124 that G2443 ye might know G1097 our G2257 affairs, G4012 and G2532 that he might comfort G3870 your G5216 hearts. G2588
Now G1161 if G1437 Timotheus G5095 come, G2064 see G991 that G2443 he may be G1096 with G4314 you G5209 without fear: G870 for G1063 he worketh G2038 the work G2041 of the Lord, G2962 as G5613 I G1473 also G2532 do. Let G1848 no G3361 man G5100 therefore G3767 despise G1848 him: G846 but G1161 conduct G4311 him G846 forth G4311 in G1722 peace, G1515 that G2443 he may come G2064 unto G4314 me: G3165 for G1063 I look for G1551 him G846 with G3326 the brethren. G80 As G1161 touching G4012 our brother G80 Apollos, G625 I G3870 greatly G4183 desired G3870 him G846 to G2443 come G2064 unto G4314 you G5209 with G3326 the brethren: G80 but G2532 his will G2307 was G2258 not G3756 at all G3843 to G2443 come G2064 at this G3568 time; but G1161 he will come G2064 when G3752 he shall have convenient time. G2119
But G1161 I trust G1679 in G1722 the Lord G2962 Jesus G2424 to send G3992 Timotheus G5095 shortly G5030 unto you, G5213 that G2443 I also G2504 may be of good comfort, G2174 when I know G1097 your G5216 state. G4012 For G1063 I have G2192 no man G3762 likeminded, G2473 who G3748 will naturally G1104 care G3309 for your G5216 state. G4012 For G1063 all G3956 seek G2212 their own, G1438 not G3756 the things which are G3588 Jesus G2424 Christ's. G5547 But G1161 ye know G1097 the proof G1382 of him, G846 that, G3754 as G5613 a son G5043 with the father, G3962 he hath served G1398 with G4862 me G1698 in G1519 the gospel. G2098 Him G3303 G5126 therefore G3767 I hope G1679 to send G3992 presently, G1824 so soon as G5613 I G302 shall see G542 how G4012 it will go with me. G1691 But G1161 I trust G3982 in G1722 the Lord G2962 that G3754 I G2064 also G2532 myself G846 shall come G2064 shortly. G5030 Yet G1161 I supposed G2233 it necessary G316 to send G3992 to G4314 you G5209 Epaphroditus, G1891 my G3450 brother, G80 and G2532 companion in labour, G4904 and G2532 fellowsoldier, G4961 but G1161 your G5216 messenger, G652 and G2532 he that ministered G3011 to my G3450 wants. G5532
And G1161 then G5119 immediately G2112 the brethren G80 sent away G1821 Paul G3972 to go G4198 as it were G5613 to G1909 the sea: G2281 but G1161 G5037 Silas G4609 and G2532 Timotheus G5095 abode G5278 there G1563 still. G5278 And G1161 they that conducted G2525 Paul G3972 brought G71 him G846 unto G2193 Athens: G116 and G2532 receiving G2983 a commandment G1785 unto G4314 Silas G4609 and G2532 Timotheus G5095 for to G2443 come G2064 to G4314 him G846 with all speed, G5613 G5033 they departed. Commentary on 1 Thessalonians 3 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 3
In this chapter the apostle gives further evidence of his love to the Thessalonians, reminding them of his sending Timothy to them, with the mention of his design therein and his inducements so to do (v. 1-5). He acquaints them also with his great satisfaction at the return of Timothy, with good tidings concerning them (v. 6-10). And concludes with fervent prayer for them (v. 11-13).
1Th 3:1-5
In these words the apostle gives an account of his sending Timothy to the Thessalonians. Though he was hindered from going to them himself, yet his love was such that he could not forbear sending Timothy to them. Though Timothy was very useful to him, and he could not well spare him, yet Paul was content, for their good, to be left alone at Athens. Note, Those ministers do not duly value the establishment and welfare of their people who cannot deny themselves in many things for that end. Observe,
1Th 3:6-10
Here we have Paul's great satisfaction upon the return of Timothy with good tidings from the Thessalonians, in which we may observe,
1Th 3:11-13
In these words we have the earnest prayer of the apostle. He desired to be instrumental in the further benefit of the Thessalonians; and the only way to be so while at a distance was by prayer for them, together with his writing or sending to them. He desired that their faith might be perfected, which he could not be the proper cause or author of; for he pretended not to dominion over their faith, nor to have the donation of it, and he therefore concludes with prayer for them. Observe,
