4 Neither G3366 give heed G4337 to fables G3454 and G2532 endless G562 genealogies, G1076 which G3748 minister G3930 questions, G2214 rather G3123 than G2228 godly G2316 edifying G3620 which G3588 is in G1722 faith: G4102 so do.
But G1161 shun G4026 profane G952 and vain babblings: G2757 for G1063 they will increase G4298 unto G1909 more G4119 ungodliness. G763 And G2532 their G846 word G3056 will eat G2192 G3542 as G5613 doth a canker: G1044 of whom G3739 is G2076 Hymenaeus G5211 and G2532 Philetus; G5372 Who G3748 concerning G4012 the truth G225 have erred, G795 saying G3004 that the resurrection G386 is past G1096 already; G2235 and G2532 overthrow G396 the faith G4102 of some. G5100
If any man G1536 teach otherwise, G2085 and G2532 consent G4334 not G3361 to wholesome G5198 words, G3056 even the words of our G2257 Lord G2962 Jesus G2424 Christ, G5547 and G2532 to the doctrine G1319 which is according G2596 to godliness; G2150 He is proud, G5187 knowing G1987 nothing, G3367 but G235 doting G3552 about G4012 questions G2214 and G2532 strifes of words, G3055 whereof G1537 G3739 cometh G1096 envy, G5355 strife, G2054 railings, G988 evil G4190 surmisings, G5283 Perverse disputings G3859 of men G444 of corrupt G1311 minds, G3563 and G2532 destitute G650 of the truth, G225 supposing G3543 that gain G4200 is G1511 godliness: G2150 from G575 such G5108 withdraw thyself. G868
For G4314 the perfecting G2677 of the saints, G40 for G1519 the work G2041 of the ministry, G1248 for G1519 the edifying G3619 of the body G4983 of Christ: G5547 Till G3360 we all G3956 come G2658 in G1519 the unity G1775 of the faith, G4102 and G2532 of the knowledge G1922 of the Son G5207 of God, G2316 unto G1519 a perfect G5046 man, G435 unto G1519 the measure G3358 of the stature G2244 of the fulness G4138 of Christ: G5547 That G2443 we henceforth be G5600 no more G3371 children, G3516 tossed to and fro, G2831 and G2532 carried about with G4064 every G3956 wind G417 of doctrine, G1319 by G1722 the sleight G2940 of men, G444 and cunning craftiness, G1722 G3834 whereby G4314 they lie in wait G3180 to deceive; G4106 But G1161 speaking the truth G226 in G1722 love, G26 may grow up G837 into G1519 him G846 in all things, G3956 which G3739 is G2076 the head, G2776 even Christ: G5547 From G1537 whom G3739 the whole G3956 body G4983 fitly joined together G4883 and G2532 compacted G4822 by G1223 that which every G3956 joint G860 supplieth, G2024 according G2596 to the effectual working G1753 in G1722 the measure G3358 of every G1538 part, G1520 G3313 maketh G4160 increase G838 of the body G4983 unto G1519 the edifying G3619 of itself G1438 in G1722 love. G26
Now G3568 I rejoice, G5463 not G3756 that G3754 ye were made sorry, G3076 but G235 that G3754 ye sorrowed G3076 to G1519 repentance: G3341 for G1063 ye were made sorry G3076 after G2596 a godly manner, G2316 that G2443 ye might receive damage G2210 by G1537 us G2257 in G1722 nothing. G3367 For G1063 godly G2316 G2596 sorrow G3077 worketh G2716 repentance G3341 to G1519 salvation G4991 not to be repented of: G278 but G1161 the sorrow G3077 of the world G2889 worketh G2716 death. Commentary on 1 Timothy 1 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 1
After the inscription (v. 1, 2) we have,
1Ti 1:1-4
Here is,
1Ti 1:5-11
Here the apostle instructs Timothy how to guard against the judaizing teachers, or others who mingled fables and endless genealogies with the gospel. He shows the use of the law, and the glory of the gospel.
1Ti 1:12-17
Here the apostle,
1Ti 1:18-20
Here is the charge he gives to Timothy to proceed in his work with resolution, v. 18. Observe here, The gospel is a charge committed to the ministers of it; it is committed to their trust, to see that it be duly applied according to the intent and meaning of it, and the design of its great Author. It seems, there had been prophecies before concerning Timothy, that he should be taken into the ministry, and should prove eminent in the work of the ministry; this encouraged Paul to commit this charge to him. Observe,
