1 Rebuke G1969 not G3361 an elder, G4245 but G235 intreat G3870 him as G5613 a father; G3962 and the younger men G3501 as G5613 brethren; G80
Likewise, G3668 ye younger, G3501 submit yourselves G5293 unto the elder. G4245 Yea, G1161 all G3956 of you be subject G5293 one to another, G240 and be clothed G1463 with humility: G5012 for G3754 God G2316 resisteth G498 the proud, G5244 and G1161 giveth G1325 grace G5485 to the humble. G5011 Humble yourselves G5013 therefore G3767 under G5259 the mighty G2900 hand G5495 of God, G2316 that G2443 he may exalt G5312 you G5209 in G1722 due time: G2540
Against G2596 an elder G4245 receive G3858 not G3361 an accusation, G2724 but G1508 G1622 before G1909 two G1417 or G2228 three G5140 witnesses. G3144 Them that sin G264 rebuke G1651 before G1799 all, G3956 that G2443 others G3062 also G2532 may G2192 fear. G5401
For this G5127 cause G5484 left I G2641 thee G4571 in G1722 Crete, G2914 that G2443 thou shouldest set in order G1930 the things that are wanting, G3007 and G2532 ordain G2525 elders G4245 in every G2596 city, G4172 as G5613 I G1473 had appointed G1299 thee: G4671 If any G1536 be G2076 blameless, G410 the husband G435 of one G3391 wife, G1135 having G2192 faithful G4103 children G5043 not G3361 accused G1722 G2724 of riot G810 or G2228 unruly. G506
Moreover G1161 if G1437 thy G4675 brother G80 shall trespass G264 against G1519 thee, G4571 go G5217 and G2532 tell G1651 him G846 his fault G1651 between G3342 thee G4675 and G2532 him G846 alone: G3441 if G1437 he shall hear G191 thee, G4675 thou hast gained G2770 thy G4675 brother. G80 But G1161 if G3362 he will G191 not G3362 hear G191 thee, then take G3880 with G3326 thee G4675 one G1520 or G2228 two G1417 more, G2089 that G2443 in G1909 the mouth G4750 of two G1417 or G2228 three G5140 witnesses G3144 every G3956 word G4487 may be established. G2476 And G1161 if G1437 he shall neglect to hear G3878 them, G846 tell G2036 it unto the church: G1577 but G1161 G2532 if G1437 he neglect to hear G3878 the church, G1577 let him be G2077 unto thee G4671 as G5618 an heathen man G1482 and G2532 a publican. G5057
Yet for G1223 love's G26 sake I G3870 rather G3123 beseech G3870 thee, being G5607 such an one G5108 as G5613 Paul G3972 the aged, G4246 and G1161 now G3570 also G2532 a prisoner G1198 of Jesus G2424 Christ. G5547 I beseech G3870 thee G4571 for G4012 my G1699 son G5043 Onesimus, G3682 whom G3739 I have begotten G1080 in G1722 my G3450 bonds: G1199
And G1161 the servant G1401 of the Lord G2962 must G1163 not G3756 strive; G3164 but G235 be G1511 gentle G2261 unto G4314 all G3956 men, apt to teach, G1317 patient, G420 In G1722 meekness G4236 instructing G3811 those that oppose themselves; G475 if G3379 God G2316 peradventure G3379 will give G1325 them G846 repentance G3341 to G1519 the acknowledging G1922 of the truth; G225
But G1161 when G3753 Peter G4074 was come G2064 to G1519 Antioch, G490 I withstood G436 him G846 to G2596 the face, G4383 because G3754 he was G2258 to be blamed. G2607 For G1063 before G4253 that certain G5100 came G2064 from G575 James, G2385 he did eat G4906 with G3326 the Gentiles: G1484 but G1161 when G3753 they were come, G2064 he withdrew G5288 and G2532 separated G873 himself, G1438 fearing G5399 them which were of G1537 the circumcision. G4061 And G2532 the other G3062 Jews G2453 dissembled G4942 likewise G2532 with him; G846 insomuch G5620 that Barnabas G921 also G2532 was carried away G4879 with their G846 dissimulation. G5272 But G235 when G3753 I saw G1492 that G3754 they walked G3716 not G3756 uprightly G3716 according to G4314 the truth G225 of the gospel, G2098 I said G2036 unto Peter G4074 before G1715 them all, G3956 If G1487 thou, G4771 being G5225 a Jew, G2453 livest G2198 after the manner of Gentiles, G1483 and G2532 not G3756 as do the Jews, G2452 why G5101 compellest thou G315 the Gentiles G1484 to live as do the Jews? Commentary on 1 Timothy 5 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 5
Here the apostle,
1Ti 5:1-2
Here the apostle gives rules to Timothy, and in him to other ministers, in reproving. Ministers are reprovers by office; it is a part, though the least pleasing part, of their office; they are to preach the word, to reprove and rebuke, 2 Tim. 4:2. A great difference is to be made in our reproofs, according to the age, quality, and other circumstances, of the persons rebuked; thus, and elder in age or office must be entreated as a father; on some have compassion, making a difference, Jude 22. Now the rule is,

Directions are here given concerning the taking of widows into the number of those who were employed by the church and had maintenance from the church: Honour widows that are widows indeed. Honour them, that is, maintain them, admit them into office. There was in those times an office in the church in which widows were employed, and that was to tend the sick and the aged, to look to them by the direction of the deacons. We read of the care taken of widows immediately upon the first forming of the Christian church (Acts 6:1), where the Grecians thought their widows were neglected in the daily ministration and provision made for poor widows. The general rule is to honour widows that are widows indeed, to maintain them, to relieve them with respect and tenderness.
