30 And his servants H5650 carried him in a chariot H7392 dead H4191 from Megiddo, H4023 and brought H935 him to Jerusalem, H3389 and buried H6912 him in his own sepulchre. H6900 And the people H5971 of the land H776 took H3947 Jehoahaz H3059 the son H1121 of Josiah, H2977 and anointed H4886 him, and made him king H4427 in his father's H1 stead.
Then the people H5971 of the land H776 took H3947 Jehoahaz H3059 the son H1121 of Josiah, H2977 and made him king H4427 in his father's H1 stead in Jerusalem. H3389 Jehoahaz H3099 was twenty H6242 and three H7969 years H8141 old H1121 when he began to reign, H4427 and he reigned H4427 three H7969 months H2320 in Jerusalem. H3389 And the king H4428 of Egypt H4714 put him down H5493 at Jerusalem, H3389 and condemned H6064 the land H776 in an hundred H3967 talents H3603 of silver H3701 and a talent H3603 of gold. H2091 And the king H4428 of Egypt H4714 made Eliakim H471 his brother H251 king H4427 over Judah H3063 and Jerusalem, H3389 and turned H5437 his name H8034 to Jehoiakim. H3079 And Necho H5224 took H3947 Jehoahaz H3099 his brother, H251 and carried H935 him to Egypt. H4714
And it came to pass, when the captains H8269 of the chariots H7393 perceived H7200 that it was not the king H4428 of Israel, H3478 that they turned back H7725 from pursuing H310 him. And a certain man H376 drew H4900 a bow H7198 at a venture, H8537 and smote H5221 the king H4428 of Israel H3478 between the joints H1694 of the harness: H8302 wherefore he said H559 unto the driver of his chariot, H7395 Turn H2015 thine hand, H3027 and carry me out H3318 of the host; H4264 for I am wounded. H2470 And the battle H4421 increased H5927 that day: H3117 and the king H4428 was stayed up H5975 in his chariot H4818 against H5227 the Syrians, H758 and died H4191 at even: H6153 and the blood H1818 ran out H3332 of the wound H4347 into the midst H2436 of the chariot. H7393 And there went H5674 a proclamation H7440 throughout the host H4264 about the going down H935 of the sun, H8121 saying, H559 Every man H376 to his city, H5892 and every man H376 to his own country. H776 So the king H4428 died, H4191 and was brought H935 to Samaria; H8111 and they buried H6912 the king H4428 in Samaria. H8111 And one washed H7857 the chariot H7393 in the pool H1295 of Samaria; H8111 and the dogs H3611 licked up H3952 his blood; H1818 and they washed H7364 his armour; H2185 according unto the word H1697 of the LORD H3068 which he spake. Commentary on 2 Kings 23 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 23
We have here,
2Ki 23:1-3
Josiah had received a message from God that there was no preventing the ruin of Jerusalem, but that he should deliver only his own soul; yet he did not therefore sit down in despair, and resolve to do nothing for his country because he could not do all he would. No, he would do his duty, and then leave the event to God. A public reformation was the thing resolved on; if any thing could prevent the threatened ruin it must be that; and here we have the preparations for that reformation.
2Ki 23:4-24
We have here an account of such a reformation as we have not met with in all the history of the kings of Judah, such thorough riddance made of all the abominable things and such foundations laid of a glorious good work; and here I cannot but wonder at two things:-
2Ki 23:25-30
Upon the reading of these verses we must say, Lord, though thy righteousness be as the great mountains-evident, conspicuous, and past dispute, yet thy judgments are a great deep, unfathomable and past finding out, Ps. 36:6. What shall we say to this?
2Ki 23:31-37
Jerusalem saw not a good day after Josiah was laid in his grave, but one trouble came after another, till within twenty-two years it was quite destroyed. Of the reign of two of his sons here is a short account; the former we find here a prisoner and the latter a tributary to the king of Egypt, and both so in the very beginning of their reign. This king of Egypt having slain Josiah, though he had not had any design upon Judah, yet, being provoked by the opposition which Josiah gave him, now, it should seem, he bent all his force against his family and kingdom. If Josiah's sons had trodden in his steps, they would have fared the better for his piety; but, deviating from them, they fared the worse for his rashness.
