36 The word G3056 which G3739 God sent G649 unto the children G5207 of Israel, G2474 preaching G2097 peace G1515 by G1223 Jesus G2424 Christ: G5547 (he G3778 is G2076 Lord G2962 of all:) G3956
Ye G5210 are G2075 the children G5207 of the prophets, G4396 and G2532 of the covenant G1242 which G3739 God G2316 made G1303 with G4314 our G2257 fathers, G3962 saying G3004 unto G4314 Abraham, G11 And G2532 in thy G4675 seed G4690 shall G1757 all G3956 the kindreds G3965 of the earth G1093 be blessed. G1757 Unto you G5213 first G4412 God, G2316 having raised up G450 his G846 Son G3816 Jesus, G2424 sent G649 him G846 to bless G2127 you, G5209 in G1722 turning away G654 every one G1538 of you G5216 from G575 his iniquities. G4189
For G1063 the scripture G1124 saith, G3004 Whosoever G3956 believeth G4100 on G1909 him G846 shall G2617 not G3756 be ashamed. G2617 For G1063 there is G2076 no G3756 difference G1293 between G5037 the Jew G2453 and G2532 the Greek: G1672 for G1063 the same G846 Lord G2962 over all G3956 is rich G4147 unto G1519 all G3956 that call upon G1941 him. G846 For G3956 G1063 whosoever G3739 G302 shall call upon G1941 the name G3686 of the Lord G2962 shall be saved. G4982
And G1161 all things G3956 are of G1537 God, G2316 who G3588 hath reconciled G2644 us G2248 to himself G1438 by G1223 Jesus G2424 Christ, G5547 and G2532 hath given G1325 to us G2254 the ministry G1248 of reconciliation; G2643 To wit, G5613 that G3754 God G2316 was G2258 in G1722 Christ, G5547 reconciling G2644 the world G2889 unto himself, G1438 not G3361 imputing G3049 their G846 trespasses G3900 unto them; G846 and G2532 hath committed G5087 unto G1722 us G2254 the word G3056 of reconciliation. G2643 Now then G3767 we are ambassadors G4243 for G5228 Christ, G5547 as though G5613 God G2316 did beseech G3870 you by G1223 us: G2257 we pray G1189 you in G5228 Christ's G5547 stead, G5228 be ye reconciled G2644 to God. G2316 For G1063 he hath made G4160 him to be sin G266 for G5228 us, G2257 who G3588 knew G1097 no G3361 sin; G266 that G2443 we G2249 might be made G1096 the righteousness G1343 of God G2316 in G1722 him. G846
Which G3739 he wrought G1754 in G1722 Christ, G5547 when he raised G1453 him G846 from G1537 the dead, G3498 and G2532 set G2523 him at G1722 his own G846 right hand G1188 in G1722 the heavenly G2032 places, Far above G5231 all G3956 principality, G746 and G2532 power, G1849 and G2532 might, G1411 and G2532 dominion, G2963 and G2532 every G3956 name G3686 that is named, G3687 not G3756 only G3440 in G1722 this G5129 world, G165 but G235 also G2532 in G1722 that which is to come: G3195 And G2532 hath put G5293 all G3956 things under G5259 his G846 feet, G4228 and G2532 gave G1325 him G846 to be the head G2776 over G5228 all G3956 things to the church, G1577 Which G3748 is G2076 his G846 body, G4983 the fulness G4138 of him that filleth G4137 all G3956 in G1722 all. G3956
But G1161 now G3570 in G1722 Christ G5547 Jesus G2424 ye G5210 who G3588 sometimes G4218 were G5607 far off G3112 are made G1096 nigh G1451 by G1722 the blood G129 of Christ. G5547 For G1063 he G846 is G2076 our G2257 peace, G1515 who G3588 hath made G4160 both G297 one, G1520 and G2532 hath broken down G3089 the middle wall G3320 of partition G5418 between us; Having abolished G2673 in G1722 his G846 flesh G4561 the enmity, G2189 even the law G3551 of commandments G1785 contained in G1722 ordinances; G1378 for to G2443 make G2936 in G1722 himself G1438 of twain G1417 one G1519 G1520 new G2537 man, G444 so making G4160 peace; G1515 And G2532 that he might reconcile G604 both G297 unto God G2316 in G1722 one G1520 body G4983 by G1223 the cross, G4716 having slain G615 the enmity G2189 thereby: G1722 G846 And G2532 came G2064 and preached G2097 peace G1515 to you G5213 which G3588 were afar off, G3112 and G2532 to them that were nigh. G1451 For G3754 through G1223 him G846 we G2192 both G297 have G2192 access G4318 by G1722 one G1520 Spirit G4151 unto G4314 the Father. G3962
One G1520 Lord, G2962 one G1520 faith, G4102 one G3391 baptism, G908 One G1520 God G2316 and G2532 Father G3962 of all, G3956 who G3588 is above G1909 all, G3956 and G2532 through G1223 all, G3956 and G2532 in G1722 you G5213 all. G3956 But G1161 unto every G1538 one G1520 of us G2257 is given G1325 grace G5485 according to G2596 the measure G3358 of the gift G1431 of Christ. G5547 Wherefore G1352 he saith, G3004 When he ascended G305 up G1519 on high, G5311 he led captivity G162 captive, G161 and G2532 gave G1325 gifts G1390 unto men. G444 (Now G1161 that he ascended, G305 what G5101 is it G2076 but G1508 that G3754 he G2597 also G2532 descended G2597 first G4412 into G1519 the lower G2737 parts G3313 of the earth? G1093 He G846 that descended G2597 is G2076 the same also G2532 that ascended up G305 far above G5231 all G3956 heavens, G3772 that G2443 he might fill G4137 all things.) G3956 And G2532 he G846 gave G1325 some, G3303 apostles; G652 and G1161 some, prophets; G4396 and G1161 some, evangelists; G2099 and G1161 some, pastors G4166 and G2532 teachers; G1320 For G4314 the perfecting G2677 of the saints, G40 for G1519 the work G2041 of the ministry, G1248 for G1519 the edifying G3619 of the body G4983 of Christ: G5547
Who G3739 is G2076 the image G1504 of the invisible G517 God, G2316 the firstborn G4416 of every G3956 creature: G2937 For G3754 by G1722 him G846 were G2936 all things G3956 created, G2936 that are in G1722 heaven, G3772 and G2532 that are in G1909 earth, G1093 visible G3707 and G2532 invisible, G517 whether G1535 they be thrones, G2362 or G1535 dominions, G2963 or G1535 principalities, G746 or G1535 powers: G1849 all things G3956 were created G2936 by G1223 him, G846 and G2532 for G1519 him: G846 And G2532 he G846 is G2076 before G4253 all things, G3956 and G2532 by G1722 him G846 all things G3956 consist. G4921 And G2532 he G846 is G2076 the head G2776 of the body, G4983 the church: G1577 who G3739 is G2076 the beginning, G746 the firstborn G4416 from G1537 the dead; G3498 that G2443 in G1722 all G3956 things he G846 might have G1096 the preeminence. G4409
And G1161 again, G3825 when G3752 he bringeth in G1521 the firstbegotten G4416 into G1519 the world, G3625 he saith, G3004 And G2532 let G4352 all G3956 the angels G32 of God G2316 worship G4352 him. G846 And G2532 of G4314 G3303 the angels G32 he saith, G3004 Who maketh G4160 his G846 angels G32 spirits, G4151 and G2532 his G846 ministers G3011 a flame G5395 of fire. G4442 But G1161 unto G4314 the Son G5207 he saith, Thy G4675 throne, G2362 O God, G2316 is for G1519 ever G165 and ever: G165 a sceptre G4464 of righteousness G2118 is the sceptre G4464 of thy G4675 kingdom. G932 Thou hast loved G25 righteousness, G1343 and G2532 hated G3404 iniquity; G458 therefore G1223 G5124 God, G2316 even thy G4675 God, G2316 hath anointed G5548 thee G4571 with the oil G1637 of gladness G20 above G3844 thy G4675 fellows. G3353 And, G2532 Thou, G4771 Lord, G2962 in G2596 the beginning G746 hast laid the foundation G2311 of the earth; G1093 and G2532 the heavens G3772 are G1526 the works G2041 of thine G4675 hands: G5495 They G846 shall perish; G622 but G1161 thou G4771 remainest; G1265 and G2532 they all G3956 shall wax old G3822 as G5613 doth a garment; G2440 And G2532 as G5616 a vesture G4018 shalt thou fold G1667 them G846 up, G1667 and G2532 they shall be changed: G236 but G1161 thou G4771 art G1488 the same, G846 and G2532 thy G4675 years G2094 shall G1587 not G3756 fail. G1587
To whom G3739 also G2532 Abraham G11 gave G3307 a tenth part G1181 of G575 all; G3956 first G4412 G3303 being by interpretation G2059 King G935 of righteousness, G1343 and G1161 after that G1899 also G2532 King G935 of Salem, G4532 which is, G3603 King G935 of peace; G1515 Without father, G540 without mother, G282 without descent, G35 having G2192 neither G3383 beginning G746 of days, G2250 nor G3383 end G5056 of life; G2222 but G1161 made like G871 unto the Son G5207 of God; G2316 abideth G3306 a priest G2409 continually. G1519 G1336
Behold, the days H3117 come, H935 saith H5002 the LORD, H3068 that I will raise H6965 unto David H1732 a righteous H6662 Branch, H6780 and a King H4428 shall reign H4427 and prosper, H7919 and shall execute H6213 judgment H4941 and justice H6666 in the earth. H776 In his days H3117 Judah H3063 shall be saved, H3467 and Israel H3478 shall dwell H7931 safely: H983 and this is his name H8034 whereby he shall be called, H7121 THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. H3072
Lift up H5375 your heads, H7218 O ye gates; H8179 and be ye lift up, H5375 ye everlasting H5769 doors; H6607 and the King H4428 of glory H3519 shall come in. H935 Who is this King H4428 of glory? H3519 The LORD H3068 strong H5808 and mighty, H1368 the LORD H3068 mighty H1368 in battle. H4421 Lift up H5375 your heads, H7218 O ye gates; H8179 even lift them up, H5375 ye everlasting H5769 doors; H6607 and the King H4428 of glory H3519 shall come in. H935 Who is this King H4428 of glory? H3519 The LORD H3068 of hosts, H6635 he is the King H4428 of glory. H3519 Selah. H5542
[[A Psalm for Solomon.]] H8010 Give H5414 the king H4428 thy judgments, H4941 O God, H430 and thy righteousness H6666 unto the king's H4428 son. H1121 He shall judge H1777 thy people H5971 with righteousness, H6664 and thy poor H6041 with judgment. H4941 The mountains H2022 shall bring H5375 peace H7965 to the people, H5971 and the little hills, H1389 by righteousness. H6666
Surely his salvation H3468 is nigh H7138 them that fear H3373 him; that glory H3519 may dwell H7931 in our land. H776 Mercy H2617 and truth H571 are met together; H6298 righteousness H6664 and peace H7965 have kissed H5401 each other.
[[A Psalm H4210 of David.]] H1732 The LORD H3068 said H5002 unto my Lord, H113 Sit H3427 thou at my right hand, H3225 until I make H7896 thine enemies H341 thy footstool. H1916 H7272 The LORD H3068 shall send H7971 the rod H4294 of thy strength H5797 out of Zion: H6726 rule H7287 thou in the midst H7130 of thine enemies. H341
Until the spirit H7307 be poured H6168 upon us from on high, H4791 and the wilderness H4057 be a fruitful field, H3759 and the fruitful field H3759 be counted H2803 for a forest. H3293 Then judgment H4941 shall dwell H7931 in the wilderness, H4057 and righteousness H6666 remain H3427 in the fruitful field. H3759 And the work H4639 of righteousness H6666 shall be peace; H7965 and the effect H5656 of righteousness H6666 quietness H8252 and assurance H983 for H5704 ever. H5769
Tell H5046 ye, and bring them near; H5066 yea, let them take counsel H3289 together: H3162 who hath declared H8085 this from ancient time? H6924 who hath told H5046 it from that time? have not I the LORD? H3068 and there is no God H430 else beside H1107 me; a just H6662 God H410 and a Saviour; H3467 there is none H369 beside H2108 me. Look H6437 unto me, and be ye saved, H3467 all the ends H657 of the earth: H776 for I am God, H410 and there is none else. I have sworn H7650 by myself, the word H1697 is gone out H3318 of my mouth H6310 in righteousness, H6666 and shall not return, H7725 That unto me every knee H1290 shall bow, H3766 every tongue H3956 shall swear. H7650 Surely, shall one say, H559 in the LORD H3068 have I righteousness H6666 and strength: H5797 even to him shall men come; H935 and all that are incensed H2734 against him shall be ashamed. H954 In the LORD H3068 shall all the seed H2233 of Israel H3478 be justified, H6663 and shall glory. H1984
Yet have I set H5258 my king H4428 upon my holy H6944 hill H2022 of Zion. H6726 I will declare H5608 the decree: H2706 the LORD H3068 hath said H559 unto me, Thou art my Son; H1121 this day H3117 have I begotten H3205 thee. Ask H7592 of me, and I shall give H5414 thee the heathen H1471 for thine inheritance, H5159 and the uttermost parts H657 of the earth H776 for thy possession. H272
I saw H1934 H2370 in the night H3916 visions, H2376 and, behold, H718 one like the Son H1247 of man H606 came H858 with H5974 the clouds H6050 of heaven, H8065 and came H4291 to H5705 the Ancient H6268 of days, H3118 and they brought him near H7127 before H6925 him. And there was given H3052 him dominion, H7985 and glory, H3367 and a kingdom, H4437 that all H3606 people, H5972 nations, H524 and languages, H3961 should serve H6399 him: his dominion H7985 is an everlasting H5957 dominion, H7985 which shall not H3809 pass away, H5709 and his kingdom H4437 that which shall not H3809 be destroyed. H2255
The LORD G2962 said G2036 unto my G3450 Lord, G2962 Sit thou G2521 on G1537 my G3450 right hand, G1188 till G2193 G302 I make G5087 thine G4675 enemies G2190 thy G4675 footstool? G5286 G4228 If G1487 David G1138 then G3767 call G2564 him G846 Lord, G2962 how G4459 is he G2076 his G846 son? G5207 And G2532 no man G3762 was able G1410 to answer G611 him G846 a word, G3056 neither G3761 durst G5111 any G5100 man from G575 that G1565 day G2250 forth ask G1905 him G846 any more G3765 questions.
And G2532 the angel G32 said G2036 unto them, G846 Fear G5399 not: G3361 for, G1063 behold, G2400 I bring G2097 you G5213 good tidings G2097 of great G3173 joy, G5479 which G3748 shall be G2071 to all G3956 people. G2992 For G3754 unto you G5213 is born G5088 this day G4594 in G1722 the city G4172 of David G1138 a Saviour, G4990 which G3739 is G2076 Christ G5547 the Lord. G2962 And G2532 this G5124 shall be a sign G4592 unto you; G5213 Ye shall find G2147 the babe G1025 wrapped in swaddling clothes, G4683 lying G2749 in G1722 a manger. G5336 And G2532 suddenly G1810 there was G1096 with G4862 the angel G32 a multitude G4128 of the heavenly G3770 host G4756 praising G134 God, G2316 and G2532 saying, G3004 Glory G1391 to God G2316 in G1722 the highest, G5310 and G2532 on G1909 earth G1093 peace, G1515 good will G2107 toward G1722 men. G444
The Father G3962 loveth G25 the Son, G5207 and G2532 hath given G1325 all things G3956 into G1722 his G846 hand. G5495 He that believeth G4100 on G1519 the Son G5207 hath G2192 everlasting G166 life: G2222 and G1161 he that believeth not G544 the Son G5207 shall G3700 not G3756 see G3700 life; G2222 but G235 the wrath G3709 of God G2316 abideth G3306 on G1909 him. G846
That G2443 all G3956 men should honour G5091 the Son, G5207 even as G2531 they honour G5091 the Father. G3962 He that honoureth G5091 not G3361 the Son G5207 honoureth G5091 not G3756 the Father G3962 which G3588 hath sent G3992 him. G846 Verily, G281 verily, G281 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 G3754 He that heareth G191 my G3450 word, G3056 and G2532 believeth G4100 on him that sent G3992 me, G3165 hath G2192 everlasting G166 life, G2222 and G2532 shall G2064 not G3756 come G2064 into G1519 condemnation; G2920 but G235 is passed G3327 from G1537 death G2288 unto G1519 life. G2222 Verily, G281 verily, G281 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 G3754 The hour G5610 is coming, G2064 and G2532 now G3568 is, G2076 when G3753 the dead G3498 shall hear G191 the voice G5456 of the Son G5207 of God: G2316 and G2532 they that hear G191 shall live. G2198 For G1063 as G5618 the Father G3962 hath G2192 life G2222 in G1722 himself; G1438 so G2532 G3779 hath he given G1325 to the Son G5207 to have G2192 life G2222 in G1722 himself; G1438 And G2532 hath given G1325 him G846 authority G1849 to execute G4160 judgment G2920 also, G2532 because G3754 he is G2076 the Son G5207 of man. G444 Marvel G2296 not G3361 at this: G5124 for G3754 the hour G5610 is coming, G2064 in G1722 the which G3739 all G3956 that are in G1722 the graves G3419 shall hear G191 his G846 voice, G5456 And G2532 shall come forth; G1607 they that have done G4160 good, G18 unto G1519 the resurrection G386 of life; G2222 and G1161 they that have done G4238 evil, G5337 unto G1519 the resurrection G386 of damnation. G2920
Then G1161 Peter G4074 said G5346 unto G4314 them, G846 Repent, G3340 and G2532 be baptized G907 every one G1538 of you G5216 in G1909 the name G3686 of Jesus G2424 Christ G5547 for G1519 the remission G859 of sins, G266 and G2532 ye shall receive G2983 the gift G1431 of the Holy G40 Ghost. G4151 For G1063 the promise G1860 is G2076 unto you, G5213 and G2532 to your G5216 children, G5043 and G2532 to all G3956 that are afar off, G1519 G3112 even as many as G3745 the Lord G2962 our G2257 God G2316 shall call. Commentary on Acts 10 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 10
It is a turn very new and remarkable which the story of this chapter gives to the Acts of the apostles; hitherto, both at Jerusalem and every where else where the ministers of Christ came, they preached the gospel only to the Jews, or those Greeks that were circumcised and proselyted to the Jews' religion; but now, "Lo, we turn to the Gentiles;' and to them the door of faith is here opened: good news indeed to us sinners of the Gentiles. The apostle Peter is the man that is first employed to admit uncircumcised Gentiles into the Christian church; and Cornelius, a Roman centurion or colonel, is the first that with his family and friends is so admitted. Now here we are told,
Act 10:1-8
The bringing of the gospel to the Gentiles, and the bringing of those who had been strangers and foreigners to be fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God, were such a mystery to the apostles themselves, and such a surprise (Eph. 3:3, 6), that it concerns us carefully to observe all the circumstances of the beginning of this great work, this part of the mystery of godliness-Christ preached to the Gentiles, and believed on in this world, 1 Tim. 3:16. It is not unlikely that some Gentiles might before now have stepped into a synagogue of the Jews, and heard the gospel preached; but the gospel was never yet designedly preached to the Gentiles, nor any of them baptized-Cornelius was the first; and here we have,
Act 10:9-18
Cornelius had received positive orders from heaven to send for Peter, whom otherwise he had not heard of, or at least not heeded; but here is another difficulty that lies in the way of bringing them together-the question is whether Peter will come to Cornelius when he is sent for; not as if he thought it below him to come at a beck, or as if he were afraid to preach his doctrine to a polite man as Cornelius was: but it sticks at a point of conscience. Cornelius is a very worthy man, and has many good qualities, but he is a Gentile, he is not circumcised; and, because God in his law had forbidden his people to associate with idolatrous nations, they would not keep company with any but those of their own religion, though they were ever so deserving, and they carried the matter so far that they made even the involuntary touch of a Gentile to contract a ceremonial pollution, Jn. 18:28. Peter had not got over this stingy bigoted notion of his countrymen, and therefore will be shy of coming to Cornelius. Now, to remove this difficulty, he has a vision here, to prepare him to receive the message sent him by Cornelius, as Ananias had to prepare him to go to Paul. The scriptures of the Old Testament had spoken plainly of the bringing in of the Gentiles into the church. Christ had given plain intimations of it when he ordered them to teach all nations; and yet even Peter himself, who knew so much of his Master's mind, could not understand it, till it was here revealed by vision, that the Gentiles should be fellow-heirs, Eph. 3:6. Now here observe,
Act 10:19-33
We have here the meeting between Peter the apostle, and Cornelius the centurion. Though Paul was designed to be the apostle of the Gentiles, and to gather in the harvest among them, and Peter to be the apostle of the circumcision, yet it is ordered that Peter shall break the ice, and reap the first-fruits of the Gentiles, that the believing Jews, who retained too much of the old leaven of ill-will to the Gentiles, might be the better reconciled to their admission into the church, when they were first brought in by their own apostle, which Peter urges against those that would have imposed circumcision upon the Gentile converts (ch. 15:7), You know that God made choice among us that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel. Now here,
Act 10:34-43
We have here Peter's sermon preached to Cornelius and his friends: that is, an abstract or summary of it; for we have reason to think that he did with many other words testify and exhort to this purport. It is intimated that he expressed himself with a great deal of solemnity and gravity, but with freedom and copiousness, in that phrase, he opened his mouth, and spoke, v. 34. O ye Corinthians, our mouth is open to you, saith Paul, 2 Co. 6:11. "You shall find us communicative, if we but find you inquisitive.' Hitherto the mouths of the apostles had been shut to the uncircumcised Gentiles, they had nothing to say to them; but now God gave unto them, as he did to Ezekiel, the opening of the mouth. This excellent sermon of Peter's is admirably suited to the circumstances of those to whom he preached it; for it was a new sermon.
Act 10:44-48
We have here the issue and effect of Peter's sermon to Cornelius and his friends. He did not labour in vain among them, but they were all brought home to Christ. Here we have,
