38 How G5613 God G2316 anointed G5548 Jesus G2424 of G575 Nazareth G3478 with the Holy G40 Ghost G4151 and G2532 with power: G1411 who G846 G3739 went about G1330 doing good, G2109 and G2532 healing G2390 all G3956 that were oppressed G2616 of G5259 the devil; G1228 for G3754 God G2316 was G2258 with G3326 him. G846
The Spirit H7307 of the Lord H136 GOD H3069 is upon me; because the LORD H3068 hath anointed H4886 me to preach good tidings H1319 unto the meek; H6035 he hath sent H7971 me to bind up H2280 the brokenhearted, H7665 H3820 to proclaim H7121 liberty H1865 to the captives, H7617 and the opening of the prison H6495 to them that are bound; H631 To proclaim H7121 the acceptable H7522 year H8141 of the LORD, H3068 and the day H3117 of vengeance H5359 of our God; H430 to comfort H5162 all that mourn; H57 To appoint H7760 unto them that mourn H57 in Zion, H6726 to give H5414 unto them beauty H6287 for ashes, H665 the oil H8081 of joy H8342 for mourning, H60 the garment H4594 of praise H8416 for the spirit H7307 of heaviness; H3544 that they might be called H7121 trees H352 of righteousness, H6664 the planting H4302 of the LORD, H3068 that he might be glorified. H6286
Forasmuch G1893 then G3767 as the children G3813 are partakers G2841 of flesh G4561 and G2532 blood, G129 he G3348 also G2532 himself G846 likewise G3898 took part G3348 of the same; G846 that G2443 through G1223 death G2288 he might destroy G2673 him that had G2192 the power G2904 of death, G2288 that is, G5123 the devil; G1228 And G2532 deliver G525 them G5128 who G3745 through G1223 fear G5401 of death G2288 were G2258 all G3956 their lifetime G2198 subject G1777 to bondage. G1397
The kings G935 of the earth G1093 stood up, G3936 and G2532 the rulers G758 were gathered G4863 together G1909 G846 against G2596 the Lord, G2962 and G2532 against G2596 his G846 Christ. G5547 For G1063 of G1909 a truth G225 against G1909 thy G4675 holy G40 child G3816 Jesus, G2424 whom G3739 thou hast anointed, G5548 both G5037 Herod, G2264 and G2532 Pontius G4194 Pilate, G4091 with G4862 the Gentiles, G1484 and G2532 the people G2992 of Israel, G2474 were gathered together, G4863
Say G3004 ye G5210 of him, whom G3739 the Father G3962 hath sanctified, G37 and G2532 sent G649 into G1519 the world, G2889 G3754 Thou blasphemest; G987 because G3754 I said, G2036 I am G1510 the Son G5207 of God? G2316 If G1487 I do G4160 not G3756 the works G2041 of my G3450 Father, G3962 believe G4100 me G3427 not. G3361 But G1161 if G1487 I do, G4160 though G2579 ye believe G4100 not G3361 me, G1698 believe G4100 the works: G2041 that G2443 ye may know, G1097 and G2532 believe, G4100 that G3754 the Father G3962 is in G1722 me, G1698 and I G2504 in G1722 him. G846
But G2532 Jesus G2424 withdrew himself G402 with G3326 his G846 disciples G3101 to G4314 the sea: G2281 and G2532 a great G4183 multitude G4128 from G575 Galilee G1056 followed G190 him, G846 and G2532 from G575 Judaea, G2449 And G2532 from G575 Jerusalem, G2414 and G2532 from G575 Idumaea, G2401 and G2532 from beyond G4008 Jordan; G2446 and G2532 they about G4012 Tyre G5184 and G2532 Sidon, G4605 a great G4183 multitude, G4128 when they had heard G191 what great things G3745 he did, G4160 came G2064 unto G4314 him. G846 And G2532 he spake G2036 to his G846 disciples, G3101 that G2443 a small ship G4142 should wait on G4342 him G846 because G1223 of the multitude, G3793 lest G3363 they should throng G2346 him. G846 For G1063 he had healed G2323 many; G4183 insomuch that G5620 they pressed upon G1968 him G846 for to G2443 touch G680 him, G846 as many as G3745 had G2192 plagues. G3148 And G2532 unclean G169 spirits, G4151 when G3752 they saw G2334 him, G846 fell down before G4363 him, G846 and G2532 cried, G2896 saying, G3004 G3754 Thou G4771 art G1488 the Son G5207 of God. G2316
And G2532 Jesus G2424 went about G4013 all G3650 Galilee, G1056 teaching G1321 in G1722 their G846 synagogues, G4864 and G2532 preaching G2784 the gospel G2098 of the kingdom, G932 and G2532 healing G2323 all G3956 manner of sickness G3554 and G2532 all G3956 manner of disease G3119 among G1722 the people. G2992 And G2532 his G846 fame G189 went G565 throughout G1519 all G3650 Syria: G4947 and G2532 they brought G4374 unto him G846 all G3956 sick G2560 people G2192 that were taken with G4912 divers G4164 diseases G3554 and G2532 torments, G931 and G2532 those which were possessed with devils, G1139 and G2532 those which were lunatick, G4583 and G2532 those that had the palsy; G3885 and G2532 he healed G2323 them. G846 And G2532 there followed G190 him G846 great G4183 multitudes of people G3793 from G575 Galilee, G1056 and G2532 from Decapolis, G1179 and G2532 from Jerusalem, G2414 and G2532 from Judaea, G2449 and G2532 from beyond G4008 Jordan. G2446
Then G2532 Jesus G2424 went G1831 thence, G1564 and departed G402 into G1519 the coasts G3313 of Tyre G5184 and G2532 Sidon. G4605 And, G2532 behold, G2400 a woman G1135 of Canaan G5478 came G1831 out of G575 the same G1565 coasts, G3725 and cried G2905 unto him, G846 saying, G3004 Have mercy G1653 on me, G3165 O Lord, G2962 thou Son G5207 of David; G1138 my G3450 daughter G2364 is grievously G2560 vexed with a devil. G1139 But G1161 he answered G611 her G846 not G3756 a word. G3056 And G2532 his G846 disciples G3101 came G4334 and besought G2065 him, G846 saying, G3004 Send G630 her G846 away; G630 for G3754 she crieth G2896 after G3693 us. G2257 But G1161 he answered G611 and said, G2036 I am G649 not G3756 sent G649 but G1508 unto G1519 the lost G622 sheep G4263 of the house G3624 of Israel. G2474 Then G1161 came she G2064 and worshipped G4352 him, G846 saying, G3004 Lord, G2962 help G997 me. G3427 But G1161 he answered G611 and said, G2036 It is G2076 not G3756 meet G2570 to take G2983 the children's G5043 bread, G740 and G2532 to cast G906 it to dogs. G2952 And G1161 she said, G2036 Truth, G3483 Lord: G2962 yet G2532 G1063 the dogs G2952 eat G2068 of G575 the crumbs G5589 which G3588 fall G4098 from G575 their G846 masters' G2962 table. G5132 Then G5119 Jesus G2424 answered G611 and said G2036 unto her, G846 O G5599 woman, G1135 great G3173 is thy G4675 faith: G4102 be it G1096 unto thee G4671 even as G5613 thou wilt. G2309 And G2532 her G846 daughter G2364 was made whole G2390 from G575 that very G1565 hour. G5610 And G2532 Jesus G2424 departed G3327 from thence, G1564 and came G2064 nigh unto G3844 the sea G2281 of Galilee; G1056 and G2532 went up G305 into G1519 a mountain, G3735 and sat down G2521 there. G1563 And G2532 great G4183 multitudes G3793 came G4334 unto him, G846 having G2192 with G3326 them those that were G1438 lame, G5560 blind, G5185 dumb, G2974 maimed, G2948 and G2532 many G4183 others, G2087 and G2532 cast G4496 them G846 down G4496 at G3844 Jesus' G2424 feet; G4228 and G2532 he healed G2323 them: G846 Insomuch that G5620 the multitude G3793 wondered, G2296 when they saw G991 the dumb G2974 to speak, G2980 the maimed G2948 to be whole, G5199 the lame G5560 to walk, G4043 and G2532 the blind G5185 to see: G991 and G2532 they glorified G1392 the God G2316 of Israel. G2474
And G2532 he said G3004 unto them, G846 Let us go G71 into G1519 the next G2192 towns, G2969 that G2443 I may preach G2784 there also: G2546 for G1063 therefore G1519 G5124 came I forth. G1831 And G2532 he preached G2784 G2258 in G1722 their G846 synagogues G4864 throughout G1519 all G3650 Galilee, G1056 and G2532 cast out G1544 devils. G1140
And G2532 forthwith G2112 Jesus G2424 gave G2010 them G846 leave. G2010 And G2532 the unclean G169 spirits G4151 went out, G1831 and entered G1525 into G1519 the swine: G5519 and G2532 the herd G34 ran G3729 violently down G2596 a steep place G2911 into G1519 the sea, G2281 G1161 (they were G2258 about G5613 two thousand;) G1367 and G2532 were choked G4155 in G1722 the sea. G2281 And G1161 they that fed G1006 the swine G5519 fled, G5343 and G2532 told G312 it in G1519 the city, G4172 and G2532 in G1519 the country. G68 And G2532 they went out G1831 to see G1492 what G5101 it was G2076 that was done. G1096 And G2532 they come G2064 to G4314 Jesus, G2424 and G2532 see G2334 him that was possessed with the devil, G1139 and had G2192 the legion, G3003 sitting, G2521 and G2532 clothed, G2439 and G2532 in his right mind: G4993 and G2532 they were afraid. G5399
And G2532 when they G846 were come G1831 out of G1537 the ship, G4143 straightway G2112 they knew G1921 him, G846 And ran through G4063 that G1565 whole G3650 region round about, G4066 and began G756 to carry about G4064 in G1909 beds G2895 those that were G2192 sick, G2560 where G3699 they heard G191 he was. G3754 G1563 G2076 And G2532 whithersoever G3699 G302 he entered, G1531 into G1519 villages, G2968 or G2228 cities, G4172 or G2228 country, G68 they laid G5087 the sick G770 in G1722 the streets, G58 and G2532 besought G3870 him G846 that G2443 they might touch G680 if G2579 it were but G2579 the border G2899 of his G846 garment: G2440 and G2532 as many G3745 as G302 touched G680 him G846 were made whole. G4982
And G2532 he said G2036 unto her, G846 For G1223 this G5126 saying G3056 go thy way; G5217 the devil G1140 is gone G1831 out of G1537 thy G4675 daughter. G2364 And G2532 when she was come G565 to G1519 her G846 house, G3624 she found G2147 the devil G1140 gone out, G1831 and G2532 her daughter G2364 laid G906 upon G1909 the bed. G2825
And G2532 in G1722 the synagogue G4864 there was G2258 a man, G444 which had G2192 a spirit G4151 of an unclean G169 devil, G1140 and G2532 cried out G349 with a loud G3173 voice, G5456 Saying, G3004 Let us alone; G1436 what G5101 have we to do G2254 with thee, G4671 G2532 thou Jesus G2424 of Nazareth? G3479 art thou come G2064 to destroy G622 us? G2248 I know G1492 thee G4571 who G5101 thou art; G1488 the Holy One G40 of God. G2316 And G2532 Jesus G2424 rebuked G2008 him, G846 saying, G3004 Hold thy peace, G5392 and G2532 come G1831 out of G1537 him. G846 And G2532 when the devil G1140 had thrown G4496 him G846 in G1519 the midst, G3319 he came G1831 out of G575 him, G846 and hurt G984 him G846 not. G3367 And G2532 they were G1096 all G1909 G3956 amazed, G2285 and G2532 spake G4814 among G4314 themselves, G240 saying, G3004 What G5101 a word G3056 is this! G3778 for G3754 with G1722 authority G1849 and G2532 power G1411 he commandeth G2004 the unclean G169 spirits, G4151 and G2532 they come out. G1831
And G2532 they that were sent, G3992 returning G5290 to G1519 the house, G3624 found G2147 the servant G1401 whole G5198 that had been sick. G770 And G2532 it came to pass G1096 G1722 the day after, G1836 that he went G4198 into G1519 a city G4172 called G2564 Nain; G3484 and G2532 many G2425 of his G846 disciples G3101 went with G4848 him, G846 and G2532 much G4183 people. G3793 Now G1161 when G5613 he came nigh G1448 to the gate G4439 of the city, G4172 behold, G2532 G2400 there was G1580 a dead man G2348 carried out, G1580 the only G3439 son G5207 of his G846 mother, G3384 and G2532 she G846 was G2258 a widow: G5503 and G2532 much G2425 people G3793 of the city G4172 was G2258 with G4862 her. G846 And G2532 when the Lord G2962 saw G1492 her, G846 he had compassion G4697 on G1909 her, G846 and G2532 said G2036 unto her, G846 Weep G2799 not. G3361 And G2532 he came G4334 and touched G680 the bier: G4673 and G1161 they that bare G941 him stood still. G2476 And G2532 he said, G2036 Young man, G3495 I say G3004 unto thee, G4671 Arise. G1453 And G2532 he that was dead G3498 sat up, G339 and G2532 began G756 to speak. G2980 And G2532 he delivered G1325 him G846 to his G846 mother. G3384 And G1161 there came G2983 a fear G5401 on all: G537 and G2532 they glorified G1392 God, G2316 saying, G3004 That G3754 a great G3173 prophet G4396 is risen up G1453 among G1722 us; G2254 and, G2532 That G3754 God G2316 hath visited G1980 his G846 people. G2992 And G2532 this G3778 rumour G3056 of G4012 him G846 went forth G1831 throughout G1722 all G3650 Judaea, G2449 and G2532 throughout G1722 all G3956 the region round about. G4066
And G1161 in G1722 that same G846 hour G5610 he cured G2323 many G4183 of G575 their infirmities G3554 and G2532 plagues, G3148 and G2532 of evil G4190 spirits; G4151 and G2532 unto many G4183 that were blind G5185 he gave G5483 sight. G991 Then G2532 Jesus G2424 answering G611 said G2036 unto them, G846 Go your way, G4198 and tell G518 John G2491 what things G3739 ye have seen G1492 and G2532 heard; G191 how G3754 that the blind G5185 see, G308 the lame G5560 walk, G4043 the lepers G3015 are cleansed, G2511 the deaf G2974 hear, G191 the dead G3498 are raised, G1453 to the poor G4434 the gospel is preached. G2097 And G2532 blessed G3107 is G2076 he, whosoever G3739 shall G4624 not G3362 be offended G4624 in G1722 me. G1698

Commentary on Acts 10 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 10
It is a turn very new and remarkable which the story of this chapter gives to the Acts of the apostles; hitherto, both at Jerusalem and every where else where the ministers of Christ came, they preached the gospel only to the Jews, or those Greeks that were circumcised and proselyted to the Jews' religion; but now, "Lo, we turn to the Gentiles;' and to them the door of faith is here opened: good news indeed to us sinners of the Gentiles. The apostle Peter is the man that is first employed to admit uncircumcised Gentiles into the Christian church; and Cornelius, a Roman centurion or colonel, is the first that with his family and friends is so admitted. Now here we are told,
Act 10:1-8
The bringing of the gospel to the Gentiles, and the bringing of those who had been strangers and foreigners to be fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God, were such a mystery to the apostles themselves, and such a surprise (Eph. 3:3, 6), that it concerns us carefully to observe all the circumstances of the beginning of this great work, this part of the mystery of godliness-Christ preached to the Gentiles, and believed on in this world, 1 Tim. 3:16. It is not unlikely that some Gentiles might before now have stepped into a synagogue of the Jews, and heard the gospel preached; but the gospel was never yet designedly preached to the Gentiles, nor any of them baptized-Cornelius was the first; and here we have,
Act 10:9-18
Cornelius had received positive orders from heaven to send for Peter, whom otherwise he had not heard of, or at least not heeded; but here is another difficulty that lies in the way of bringing them together-the question is whether Peter will come to Cornelius when he is sent for; not as if he thought it below him to come at a beck, or as if he were afraid to preach his doctrine to a polite man as Cornelius was: but it sticks at a point of conscience. Cornelius is a very worthy man, and has many good qualities, but he is a Gentile, he is not circumcised; and, because God in his law had forbidden his people to associate with idolatrous nations, they would not keep company with any but those of their own religion, though they were ever so deserving, and they carried the matter so far that they made even the involuntary touch of a Gentile to contract a ceremonial pollution, Jn. 18:28. Peter had not got over this stingy bigoted notion of his countrymen, and therefore will be shy of coming to Cornelius. Now, to remove this difficulty, he has a vision here, to prepare him to receive the message sent him by Cornelius, as Ananias had to prepare him to go to Paul. The scriptures of the Old Testament had spoken plainly of the bringing in of the Gentiles into the church. Christ had given plain intimations of it when he ordered them to teach all nations; and yet even Peter himself, who knew so much of his Master's mind, could not understand it, till it was here revealed by vision, that the Gentiles should be fellow-heirs, Eph. 3:6. Now here observe,
Act 10:19-33
We have here the meeting between Peter the apostle, and Cornelius the centurion. Though Paul was designed to be the apostle of the Gentiles, and to gather in the harvest among them, and Peter to be the apostle of the circumcision, yet it is ordered that Peter shall break the ice, and reap the first-fruits of the Gentiles, that the believing Jews, who retained too much of the old leaven of ill-will to the Gentiles, might be the better reconciled to their admission into the church, when they were first brought in by their own apostle, which Peter urges against those that would have imposed circumcision upon the Gentile converts (ch. 15:7), You know that God made choice among us that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel. Now here,
Act 10:34-43
We have here Peter's sermon preached to Cornelius and his friends: that is, an abstract or summary of it; for we have reason to think that he did with many other words testify and exhort to this purport. It is intimated that he expressed himself with a great deal of solemnity and gravity, but with freedom and copiousness, in that phrase, he opened his mouth, and spoke, v. 34. O ye Corinthians, our mouth is open to you, saith Paul, 2 Co. 6:11. "You shall find us communicative, if we but find you inquisitive.' Hitherto the mouths of the apostles had been shut to the uncircumcised Gentiles, they had nothing to say to them; but now God gave unto them, as he did to Ezekiel, the opening of the mouth. This excellent sermon of Peter's is admirably suited to the circumstances of those to whom he preached it; for it was a new sermon.
Act 10:44-48
We have here the issue and effect of Peter's sermon to Cornelius and his friends. He did not labour in vain among them, but they were all brought home to Christ. Here we have,
