15 And G1161 the evil G4190 spirit G4151 answered G611 and said, G2036 Jesus G2424 I know, G1097 and G2532 Paul G3972 I know; G1987 but G1161 who G5101 are G2075 ye? G5210
Now the serpent H5175 was H1961 more subtil H6175 than any beast H2416 of the field H7704 which the LORD H3068 God H430 had made. H6213 And he said H559 unto the woman, H802 Yea, H637 hath God H430 said, H559 Ye shall not eat H398 of every tree H6086 of the garden? H1588 And the woman H802 said H559 unto the serpent, H5175 We may eat H398 of the fruit H6529 of the trees H6086 of the garden: H1588 But of the fruit H6529 of the tree H6086 which is in the midst H8432 of the garden, H1588 God H430 hath said, H559 Ye shall not eat H398 of it, neither shall ye touch H5060 it, lest H6435 ye die. H4191 And the serpent H5175 said H559 unto the woman, H802 Ye shall not surely H4191 die: H4191 For God H430 doth know H3045 that in the day H3117 ye eat H398 thereof, then your eyes H5869 shall be opened, H6491 and ye shall be as gods, H430 knowing H3045 good H2896 and evil. H7451
And there came forth H3318 a spirit, H7307 and stood H5975 before H6440 the LORD, H3068 and said, H559 I will persuade H6601 him. And the LORD H3068 said H559 unto him, Wherewith? And he said, H559 I will go forth, H3318 and I will be a lying H8267 spirit H7307 in the mouth H6310 of all his prophets. H5030 And he said, H559 Thou shalt persuade H6601 him, and prevail H3201 also: go forth, H3318 and do H6213 so. Now therefore, behold, the LORD H3068 hath put H5414 a lying H8267 spirit H7307 in the mouth H6310 of all these thy prophets, H5030 and the LORD H3068 hath spoken H1696 evil H7451 concerning thee.
And G2532 he asked G1905 him, G846 What G5101 is thy G4671 name? G3686 And G2532 he answered, G611 saying, G3004 My G3427 name G3686 is Legion: G3003 for G3754 we are G2070 many. G4183 And G2532 he besought G3870 him G846 much G4183 that G3363 he would G649 not G3363 send G649 them G846 away G649 out of G1854 the country. G5561 Now G1161 there was G2258 there G1563 nigh G4314 unto the mountains G3735 a great G3173 herd G34 of swine G5519 feeding. G1006 And G2532 all G3956 the devils G1142 besought G3870 him, G846 saying, G3004 Send G3992 us G2248 into G1519 the swine, G5519 that G2443 we may enter G1525 into G1519 them. G846 And G2532 forthwith G2112 Jesus G2424 gave G2010 them G846 leave. G2010 And G2532 the unclean G169 spirits G4151 went out, G1831 and entered G1525 into G1519 the swine: G5519 and G2532 the herd G34 ran G3729 violently down G2596 a steep place G2911 into G1519 the sea, G2281 G1161 (they were G2258 about G5613 two thousand;) G1367 and G2532 were choked G4155 in G1722 the sea. G2281
And G2532 in G1722 the synagogue G4864 there was G2258 a man, G444 which had G2192 a spirit G4151 of an unclean G169 devil, G1140 and G2532 cried out G349 with a loud G3173 voice, G5456 Saying, G3004 Let us alone; G1436 what G5101 have we to do G2254 with thee, G4671 G2532 thou Jesus G2424 of Nazareth? G3479 art thou come G2064 to destroy G622 us? G2248 I know G1492 thee G4571 who G5101 thou art; G1488 the Holy One G40 of God. G2316 And G2532 Jesus G2424 rebuked G2008 him, G846 saying, G3004 Hold thy peace, G5392 and G2532 come G1831 out of G1537 him. G846 And G2532 when the devil G1140 had thrown G4496 him G846 in G1519 the midst, G3319 he came G1831 out of G575 him, G846 and hurt G984 him G846 not. G3367
When G1161 he saw G1492 Jesus, G2424 he cried out, G349 and G2532 fell down before G4363 him, G846 and G2532 with a loud G3173 voice G5456 said, G2036 What G5101 have I G1698 to do with G2532 thee, G4671 Jesus, G2424 thou Son G5207 of God G2316 most high? G5310 I beseech G1189 thee, G4675 torment G928 me G3165 not. G3361 (For G1063 he had commanded G3853 G3853 the unclean G169 spirit G4151 to come G1831 out of G575 the man. G444 For G1063 oftentimes G4183 G5550 it had caught G4884 him: G846 and G2532 he was kept G5442 bound G1196 with chains G254 and G2532 in fetters; G3976 and G2532 he brake G1284 the bands, G1199 and was driven G1643 of G5259 the devil G1142 into G1519 the wilderness.) G2048 And G1161 Jesus G2424 asked G1905 him, G846 saying, G3004 What G5101 is G2076 thy G4671 name? G3686 And G1161 he said, G2036 Legion: G3003 because G3754 many G4183 devils G1140 were entered G1525 into G1519 him. G846 And G2532 they besought G3870 G3870 him G846 that G3363 he would G2004 not G3363 command G2004 them G846 to go out G565 into G1519 the deep. G12 And G1161 there was G2258 there G1563 an herd G34 of many G2425 swine G5519 feeding G1006 on G1722 the mountain: G3735 and G2532 they besought G3870 him G846 that G2443 he would suffer G2010 them G846 to enter G1525 into G1519 them. G1565 And G2532 he suffered G2010 them. G846
The same G3778 followed G2628 Paul G3972 and G2532 us, G2254 and cried, G2896 saying, G3004 These G3778 men G444 are G1526 the servants G1401 of the most high G5310 God, G2316 which G3748 shew G2605 unto us G2254 the way G3598 of salvation. G4991 And G1161 this G5124 did she G4160 G1909 many G4183 days. G2250 But G1161 Paul, G3972 being grieved, G1278 turned G1994 and G2532 said G2036 to the spirit, G4151 I command G3853 thee G4671 in G1722 the name G3686 of Jesus G2424 Christ G5547 to come G1831 out of G575 her. G846 And G2532 he came out G1831 the same G846 hour. G5610
And, G2532 behold, G2400 they cried out, G2896 saying, G3004 What G5101 have we G2254 to do with G2532 thee, G4671 Jesus, G2424 thou Son G5207 of God? G2316 art thou come G2064 hither G5602 to torment G928 us G2248 before G4253 the time? G2540 And G1161 there was G2258 a good way off G3112 from G575 them G846 an herd G34 of many G4183 swine G5519 feeding. G1006 So G1161 the devils G1142 besought G3870 him, G846 saying, G3004 If G1487 thou cast G1544 us G2248 out, G1544 suffer G2010 us G2254 to go away G565 into G1519 the herd G34 of swine. G5519

Commentary on Acts 19 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 19
We left Paul in his circuit visiting the churches (ch. 18:23), but we have not forgotten, nor has he, the promise he made to his friends at Ephesus, to return to them, and make some stay there; now this chapter shows us his performance of that promise, his coming to Ephesus, and his continuance there two years; we are here told,
Act 19:1-7
Ephesus was a city of great note in Asia, famous for a temple built there to Diana, which was one of the wonders of the world: thither Paul came to preach the gospel while Apollos was at Corinth (v. 1); while he was watering there, Paul was planting here, and grudged not that Apollos entered into his labours and was building upon his foundation, but rejoiced in it, and went on in the new work that was cut out for him at Ephesus with the more cheerfulness and satisfaction, because he knew that such an able minister of the New Testament as Apollos was now at Corinth, carrying on the good work there. Though there were those that made him the head of a party against Paul (1 Co. 1:12), yet Paul had no jealousy of him, nor any way disliked the affection the people had for him. Paul having gone through the country of Galatia and Phrygia, having passed through the upper coasts, Pontus and Bithynia, that lay north, at length came to Ephesus, where he had left Aquila and Priscilla, and there found them. At his first coming, he met with some disciples there, who professed faith in Christ as the true Messiah, but were as yet in the first and lowest form in the school of Christ, under his usher John the Baptist. They were in number about twelve (v. 7); they were much of the standing that Apollos was of when he came to Ephesus (for he knew only the baptism of John, ch. 18:25), but they had not opportunity of being acquainted with Aquila and Priscilla, or had not been so long in Ephesus or were not so willing to receive instruction as Apollos was, otherwise they might have had the way of God expounded to them more perfectly, as Apollos had. Observe here,
Act 19:8-12
Paul is here very busy at Ephesus to do good.
Act 19:13-20
The preachers of the gospel were sent forth to carry on a war against Satan, and therein Christ went forth conquering and to conquer. The casting of evil spirits out of those that were possessed was one instance of Christ's victory over Satan; but, to show in how many ways Christ triumphed over that great enemy, we have here in these verses two remarkable instances of the conquest of Satan, not only in those that were violently possessed by him, but in those that were voluntarily devoted to him.
