15 And have G2192 hope G1680 toward G1519 God, G2316 which G3739 they G3778 themselves G846 also G2532 allow, G4327 that there shall be G3195 G1510 a resurrection G386 of the dead, G3498 both G5037 of the just G1342 and G2532 unjust. G94
Marvel G2296 not G3361 at this: G5124 for G3754 the hour G5610 is coming, G2064 in G1722 the which G3739 all G3956 that are in G1722 the graves G3419 shall hear G191 his G846 voice, G5456 And G2532 shall come forth; G1607 they that have done G4160 good, G18 unto G1519 the resurrection G386 of life; G2222 and G1161 they that have done G4238 evil, G5337 unto G1519 the resurrection G386 of damnation. G2920
For G1063 if G1487 we believe G4100 that G3754 Jesus G2424 died G599 and G2532 rose again, G450 even so G3779 them also G2532 which sleep G2837 in G1223 Jesus G2424 will G71 God G2316 bring G71 with G4862 him. G846 For G1063 this G5124 we say G3004 unto you G5213 by G1722 the word G3056 of the Lord, G2962 that G3754 we G2249 which G3588 are alive G2198 and remain G4035 unto G1519 the coming G3952 of the Lord G2962 shall G5348 not G3364 prevent G5348 them which G3588 are asleep. G2837 For G3754 the Lord G2962 himself G846 shall descend G2597 from G575 heaven G3772 with G1722 a shout, G2752 with G1722 the voice G5456 of the archangel, G743 and G2532 with G1722 the trump G4536 of God: G2316 and G2532 the dead G3498 in G1722 Christ G5547 shall rise G450 first: G4412
But G1161 as touching G4012 the resurrection G386 of the dead, G3498 have ye G314 not G3756 read G314 that which G3588 was spoken G4483 unto you G5213 by G5259 God, G2316 saying, G3004 I G1473 am G1510 the God G2316 of Abraham, G11 and G2532 the God G2316 of Isaac, G2464 and G2532 the God G2316 of Jacob? G2384 God G2316 is G2076 not G3756 the God G2316 of the dead, G3498 but G235 of the living. G2198
But G1161 when Paul G3972 perceived G1097 that G3754 the one G1520 part G3313 were G2076 Sadducees, G4523 and G1161 the other G2087 Pharisees, G5330 he cried out G2896 in G1722 the council, G4892 Men G435 and brethren, G80 I G1473 am G1510 a Pharisee, G5330 the son G5207 of a Pharisee: G5330 of G4012 the hope G1680 and G2532 resurrection G386 of the dead G3498 I G1473 am called in question. G2919 And G1161 when he G846 had G2980 so G5124 said, G2980 there arose G1096 a dissension G4714 between the Pharisees G5330 and G2532 the Sadducees: G4523 and G2532 the multitude G4128 was divided. G4977 For G1063 G3303 the Sadducees G4523 say G3004 that there is G1511 no G3361 resurrection, G386 neither G3366 angel, G32 nor G3383 spirit: G4151 but G1161 the Pharisees G5330 confess G3670 both. G297
And G2532 now G3568 I stand G2476 and am judged G2919 for G1909 the hope G1680 of the promise G1860 made G1096 of G5259 God G2316 unto G4314 our fathers: G3962 Unto G1519 which G3739 promise our G2257 twelve tribes, G1429 instantly G1722 G1616 serving G3000 God day G2250 and G2532 night, G3571 hope G1679 to come. G2658 For G4012 which G3739 hope's sake, G1680 king G935 Agrippa, G67 I am accused G1458 of G5259 the Jews. G2453
For G1223 this G5026 cause G156 therefore G3767 have I called G3870 for you, G5209 to see G1492 you, and G2532 to speak with G4354 you: because that G1752 for G1063 the hope G1680 of Israel G2474 I am bound with G4029 this G5026 chain. G254 And G1161 they said G2036 unto G4314 him, G846 We G2249 neither G3777 received G1209 letters G1121 out of G575 Judaea G2449 concerning G4012 thee, G4675 neither G3777 any G5100 of the brethren G80 that came G3854 shewed G518 or G2228 spake G2980 any G5100 harm G4190 of G4012 thee. G4675 But G1161 we desire G515 to hear G191 of G3844 thee G4675 what G3739 thou thinkest: G5426 for G1063 as concerning G4012 G3303 this G5026 sect, G139 we G2254 know G2076 G1110 that G3754 every where G3837 it is spoken against. G483 And G1161 when they had appointed G5021 him G846 a day, G2250 there came G2240 many G4119 to G4314 him G846 into G1519 his lodging; G3578 to whom G3739 he expounded G1620 and testified G1263 the kingdom G932 of God, G2316 G5037 persuading G3982 them G846 concerning G4012 Jesus, G2424 both G5037 out of G575 the law G3551 of Moses, G3475 and G2532 out of the prophets, G4396 from G575 morning G4404 till G2193 evening. G2073 And G2532 some G3303 believed G3982 the things which were spoken, G3004 and G1161 some believed not. G569 And G1161 when they agreed not G800 G5607 among G4314 themselves, G240 they departed, G630 after that Paul G3972 had spoken G2036 one G1520 word, G4487 G3754 Well G2573 spake G2980 the Holy G40 Ghost G4151 by G1223 Esaias G2268 the prophet G4396 unto G4314 our G2257 fathers, G3962 Saying, G3004 Go G4198 unto G4314 this G5126 people, G2992 and G2532 say, G2036 Hearing G189 ye shall hear, G191 and G2532 shall G4920 not G3364 understand; G4920 and G2532 seeing G991 ye shall see, G991 and G2532 not G3364 perceive: G1492 For G1063 the heart G2588 of this G5127 people G2992 is waxed gross, G3975 and G2532 their ears G3775 are dull G917 of hearing, G191 and G2532 their G846 eyes G3788 have they closed; G2576 lest G3379 they should see G1492 with their eyes, G3788 and G2532 hear G191 with their ears, G3775 and G2532 understand G4920 with their heart, G2588 and G2532 should be converted, G1994 and G2532 I should heal G2390 them. G846 Be it G2077 known G1110 therefore G3767 unto you, G5213 that G3754 the salvation G4992 of God G2316 is sent G649 unto the Gentiles, G1484 and G2532 that they will hear G191 it. G846 And G2532 when he G846 had said G2036 these words, G5023 the Jews G2453 departed, G565 and had G2192 great G4183 reasoning G4803 among G1722 themselves. G1438 And G1161 Paul G3972 dwelt G3306 two G1333 whole G3650 years G1333 in G1722 his own G2398 hired house, G3410 and G2532 received G588 all G3956 that came in G1531 unto G4314 him, G846 Preaching G2784 the kingdom G932 of God, G2316 and G2532 teaching G1321 those things which concern G4012 the Lord G2962 Jesus G2424 Christ, G5547 with G3326 all G3956 confidence, G3954 no man forbidding him. G209
Now G1161 if G1487 Christ G5547 be preached G2784 that G3754 he rose G1453 from G1537 the dead, G3498 how G4459 say G3004 some G5100 among G1722 you G5213 that G3754 there is G2076 no G3756 resurrection G386 of the dead? G3498 But G1161 if G1487 there be G2076 no G3756 resurrection G386 of the dead, G3498 then G3761 is G1453 Christ G5547 not G3761 risen: G1453 And G1161 if G1487 Christ G5547 be G1453 not G3756 risen, G1453 then G686 is our G2257 preaching G2782 vain, G2756 and G2532 your G5216 faith G4102 is G1161 also G2532 vain. G2756 Yea, G1161 and G2532 we are found G2147 false witnesses G5575 of God; G2316 because G3754 we have testified G3140 of G2596 God G2316 that G3754 he raised up G1453 Christ: G5547 whom G3739 he raised G1453 not G3756 up, G1453 if G1512 so be G686 that the dead G3498 rise G1453 not. G3756 For G1063 if G1487 the dead G3498 rise G1453 not, G3756 then is G1453 not G3761 Christ G5547 raised: G1453 And G1161 if G1487 Christ G5547 be G1453 not G3756 raised, G1453 your G5216 faith G4102 is vain; G3152 ye are G2075 yet G2089 in G1722 your G5216 sins. G266 Then G686 they also G2532 which are fallen asleep G2837 in G1722 Christ G5547 are perished. G622 If G1487 in G1722 this G5026 life G2222 only G3440 we have hope G1679 G2070 in G1722 Christ, G5547 we are G2070 of all G3956 men G444 most miserable. G1652 But G1161 now G3570 is G1453 Christ G5547 risen G1453 from G1537 the dead, G3498 and become G1096 the firstfruits G536 of them that slept. G2837 For G1063 since G1894 by G1223 man G444 came death, G2288 by G1223 man G444 came also G2532 the resurrection G386 of the dead. G3498 For G1063 as G5618 in G1722 Adam G76 all G3956 die, G599 even G2532 so G3779 in G1722 Christ G5547 shall G2227 all G3956 be made alive. G2227 But G1161 every man G1538 in G1722 his own G2398 order: G5001 Christ G5547 the firstfruits; G536 afterward G1899 they that are G3588 Christ's G5547 at G1722 his G846 coming. G3952 Then G1534 cometh the end, G5056 when G3752 he shall have delivered up G3860 the kingdom G932 to God, G2316 even G2532 the Father; G3962 when G3752 he shall have put down G2673 all G3956 rule G746 and G2532 all G3956 authority G1849 and G2532 power. G1411 For G1063 he G846 must G1163 reign, G936 till G891 G3757 he hath put G302 G5087 all G3956 enemies G2190 under G5259 his G846 feet. G4228 The last G2078 enemy G2190 that shall be destroyed G2673 is death. G2288 For G1063 he hath put G5293 all things G3956 under G5259 his G846 feet. G4228 But G1161 when G3752 he saith G2036 G3754 all things G3956 are put under G5293 him, it is manifest G1212 that G3754 he is excepted, G1622 which did put G5293 all things G3956 under G5293 him. G846
And G2532 I saw G1492 the dead, G3498 small G3398 and G2532 great, G3173 stand G2476 before G1799 God; G2316 and G2532 the books G975 were opened: G455 and G2532 another G243 book G975 was opened, G455 which G3739 is G2076 the book of life: G2222 and G2532 the dead G3498 were judged G2919 out of G1537 those things which were written G1125 in G1722 the books, G975 according to G2596 their G846 works. G2041 And G2532 the sea G2281 gave up G1325 the dead G3498 which G3588 were in G1722 it; G846 and G2532 death G2288 and G2532 hell G86 delivered up G1325 the dead G3498 which G3588 were in G1722 them: G846 and G2532 they were judged G2919 every man G1538 according to G2596 their G846 works. Commentary on Acts 24 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 24
We left Paul a prisoner at Caesarea, in Herod's judgment-hall, expecting his trial to come on quickly; for in the beginning of his imprisonment his affairs moved very quickly, but afterwards very slowly. In this chapter we have his arraignment and trial before Felix the governor at Caesarea; here is,
Act 24:1-9
We must suppose that Lysias, the chief captain, when he had sent away Paul to Caesarea, gave notice to the chief priests, and others that had appeared against Paul, that if they had any thing to accuse him of they must follow him to Caesarea, and there they would find hi, and a judge ready to hear them-thinking, perhaps, they would not have given themselves so much trouble; but what will not malice do?
Act 24:10-21
We have here Paul's defence of himself, in answer to Tertullus's charge, and there appears in it a great deal of the spirit of wisdom and holiness, and an accomplishment of Christ's promise to his followers that when they were before governors and kings, for his sake, it should be given them in that same hour what they should speak. Though Tertullus had said a great many provoking things, yet Paul did not interrupt him, but let him go on to the end of his speech, according to the rules of decency and the method in courts of justice, that the plaintiff be allowed to finish his evidence before the defendant begins his plea. And when he had done, he did not presently fly out into passionate exclamations against the iniquity of the times and the men (O tempora! O mores!-Oh the degeneracy of the times!) but he waited for a permission from the judge to speak in his turn, and had it. The governor beckoned to him to speak, v. 10. And now he also may have leave to speak out, under the protection of the governor, which was more than he could hitherto obtain. And, when he did speak, he made no reflections at all upon Tertullus, who he knew spoke for his fee, and therefore despised what he said, and levelled his defence against those that employed him. And here,
Act 24:22-27
We have here the result of Paul's trial before Felix, and what was the consequence of it.
