19 Saying, G3004 Give G1325 me also G2504 this G5026 power, G1849 that G2443 on G2007 whomsoever G3739 G1437 I lay G2007 hands, G5495 he may receive G2983 the Holy G40 Ghost. G4151
And G1161 he put forth G3004 a parable G3850 to G4314 those which were bidden, G2564 when he marked G1907 how G4459 they chose out G1586 the chief rooms; G4411 saying G3004 unto G4314 them, G846 When G3752 thou art bidden G2564 of G5259 any G5100 man to G1519 a wedding, G1062 sit G2625 not G3361 down G2625 in G1519 the highest room; G4411 lest G3379 a more honourable man G1784 than thou G4675 be G5600 bidden G2564 of G5259 him; G846 And G2532 he that bade G2564 thee G4571 and G2532 him G846 come G2064 and say G2046 to thee, G4671 Give G1325 this man G5129 place; G5117 and G2532 G5119 thou begin G756 with G3326 shame G152 to take G2722 the lowest G2078 room. G5117 But G235 when G3752 thou art bidden, G2564 go G4198 and sit down G377 in G1519 the lowest G2078 room; G5117 that G2443 when G3752 he that bade G2564 thee G4571 cometh, G2064 he may say G2036 unto thee, G4671 Friend, G5384 go up G4320 higher: G511 then G5119 shalt thou G4671 have G2071 worship G1391 in the presence G1799 of them that sit at meat G4873 with thee. G4671 For G3754 whosoever G3956 exalteth G5312 himself G1438 shall be abased; G5013 and G2532 he that humbleth G5013 himself G1438 shall be exalted. G5312
At G1722 the same G1565 time G5610 came G4334 the disciples G3101 unto Jesus, G2424 saying, G3004 Who G5101 G686 is G2076 the greatest G3187 in G1722 the kingdom G932 of heaven? G3772 And G2532 Jesus G2424 called G4341 a little child G3813 unto him, G4341 and set G2476 him G846 in G1722 the midst G3319 of them, G846 And G2532 said, G2036 Verily G281 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 Except G3362 ye be converted, G4762 and G2532 become G1096 as G5613 little children, G3813 ye shall G1525 not G3364 enter G1525 into G1519 the kingdom G932 of heaven. G3772
But G1161 there was a certain G5100 man, G435 called G3686 Simon, G4613 which beforetime G4391 in G1722 the same city G4172 used sorcery, G3096 and G2532 bewitched G1839 the people G1484 of Samaria, G4540 giving out G3004 that himself G1438 was G1511 some G5100 great one: G3173 To whom G3739 they all G3956 gave heed, G4337 from G575 the least G3398 to G2193 the greatest, G3173 saying, G3004 This man G3778 is G2076 the great G3173 power G1411 of God. G2316 And G1161 to him G846 they had regard, G4337 because G1223 that of long G2425 time G5550 he had bewitched G1839 them G846 with sorceries. G3095
And G1161 last G2078 of all G3956 he was seen G3700 of me also, G2504 as G5619 of one born out of due time. G1626 For G1063 I G1473 am G1510 the least G1646 of the apostles, G652 that G3739 am G1510 not G3756 meet G2425 to be called G2564 an apostle, G652 because G1360 I persecuted G1377 the church G1577 of God. Commentary on Acts 8 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 8
In this chapter we have an account of the persecutions of the Christians, and the propagating of Christianity thereby. It was strange, but very true, that the disciples of Christ the more they were afflicted the more they multiplied.
Act 8:1-3
In these verses we have,
Act 8:4-13
Samson's riddle is here again unriddled: Out of the eater comes forth meat, and out of the strong sweetness. The persecution that was designed to extirpate the church was by the overruling providence of God made an occasion of the enlargement of it. Christ had said, I am come to send fire on the earth; and they thought, by scattering those who were kindled with that fire, to have put it out, but instead of this they did but help to spread it.
Act 8:14-25
God had wonderfully owned Philip in his work as an evangelist at Samaria, but he could do no more than an evangelist; there were some peculiar powers reserved to the apostles, for the keeping up of the dignity of their office, and here we have an account of what was done by two of them there-Peter and John. The twelve kept together at Jerusalem (v. 1), and thither these good tidings were brought them that Samaria had received the word of God (v. 14), that a great harvest of souls was gathered, and was likely to be gathered in to Christ there. The word of God was not only preached to them, but received by them; they bade it welcome, admitted the light of it, and submitted to the power of it: When they heard it, they sent unto them Peter and John. If Peter had been, as some say he was, the prince of the apostles, he would have sent some of them, or, if he had seen cause, would have gone himself of his own accord; but he was so far from this that he submitted to an order of the house, and, as a servant to the body, went whither they sent him. Two apostles were sent, the two most eminent, to Samaria,
Act 8:26-40
We have here the story of the conversion of an Ethiopian eunuch to the faith of Christ, by whom, we have reason to think, the knowledge of Christ was sent into that country where he lived, and that scripture fulfilled, Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands (one of the first of the nations) unto God, Ps. 68:31.
