23 And G1161 after G5613 that many G2425 days G2250 were fulfilled, G4137 the Jews G2453 took counsel G4823 to kill G337 him: G846
Now it came to pass, when Adonizedek H139 king H4428 of Jerusalem H3389 had heard H8085 how H3588 Joshua H3091 had taken H3920 Ai, H5857 and had utterly destroyed H2763 it; as he had done H6213 to Jericho H3405 and her king, H4428 so he had done H6213 to Ai H5857 and her king; H4428 and how the inhabitants H3427 of Gibeon H1391 had made peace H7999 with Israel, H3478 and were among H7130 them; That they feared H3372 greatly, H3966 because Gibeon H1391 was a great H1419 city, H5892 as one H259 of the royal H4467 cities, H5892 and because it was greater H1419 than Ai, H5857 and all the men H582 thereof were mighty. H1368 Wherefore Adonizedek H139 king H4428 of Jerusalem H3389 sent H7971 unto Hoham H1944 king H4428 of Hebron, H2275 and unto Piram H6502 king H4428 of Jarmuth, H3412 and unto Japhia H3309 king H4428 of Lachish, H3923 and unto Debir H1688 king H4428 of Eglon, H5700 saying, H559 Come up H5927 unto me, and help H5826 me, that we may smite H5221 Gibeon: H1391 for it hath made peace H7999 with Joshua H3091 and with the children H1121 of Israel. H3478 Therefore the five H2568 kings H4428 of the Amorites, H567 the king H4428 of Jerusalem, H3389 the king H4428 of Hebron, H2275 the king H4428 of Jarmuth, H3412 the king H4428 of Lachish, H3923 the king H4428 of Eglon, H5700 gathered themselves together, H622 and went up, H5927 they and all their hosts, H4264 and encamped H2583 before Gibeon, H1391 and made war H3898 against it. And the men H582 of Gibeon H1391 sent H7971 unto Joshua H3091 to the camp H4264 to Gilgal, H1537 saying, H559 Slack H7503 not thy hand H3027 from thy servants; H5650 come up H5927 to us quickly, H4120 and save H3467 us, and help H5826 us: for all the kings H4428 of the Amorites H567 that dwell H3427 in the mountains H2022 are gathered together H6908 against us.
Behold, G2400 I G1473 send G649 you G5209 forth G649 as G5613 sheep G4263 in G1722 the midst G3319 of wolves: G3074 be ye G1096 therefore G3767 wise G5429 as G5613 serpents, G3789 and G2532 harmless G185 as G5613 doves. G4058 But G1161 beware G4337 of G575 men: G444 for G1063 they will deliver G3860 you G5209 up G3860 to G1519 the councils, G4892 and G2532 they will scourge G3146 you G5209 in G1722 their G846 synagogues; G4864 And G2532 ye shall be brought G71 before G1909 governors G2232 and G2532 G1161 kings G935 for my G1752 sake, G1700 for G1519 a testimony G3142 against them G846 and G2532 the Gentiles. G1484 But G1161 when G3752 they deliver G3860 you G5209 up, G3860 take G3309 no G3361 thought G3309 how G4459 or G2228 what G5101 ye shall speak: G2980 for G1063 it shall be given G1325 you G5213 in G1722 that same G1565 hour G5610 what G5101 ye shall speak. G2980 For G1063 it is G2075 not G3756 ye G5210 that speak, G2980 but G235 the Spirit G4151 of your G5216 Father G3962 which G3588 speaketh G2980 in G1722 you. G5213 And G1161 the brother G80 shall deliver up G3860 the brother G80 to G1519 death, G2288 and G2532 the father G3962 the child: G5043 and G2532 the children G5043 shall rise up G1881 against G1909 their parents, G1118 and G2532 cause G2289 them G846 to be put to death. G2289 And G2532 ye shall G2071 be hated G3404 of G5259 all G3956 men for G1223 my G3450 name's sake: G3686 but G1161 he that G3778 endureth G5278 to G1519 the end G5056 shall be saved. G4982 But G1161 when G3752 they persecute G1377 you G5209 in G1722 this G5026 city, G4172 flee ye G5343 into G1519 another: G243 for G1063 verily G281 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 Ye shall G5055 not G3364 have gone over G5055 the cities G4172 of Israel, G2474 till G2193 the Son G5207 of man G444 be G302 come. G2064
And G2532 he said G2036 unto G4314 me, G3165 Depart: G4198 for G3754 I G1473 will send G1821 thee G4571 far hence G3112 unto G1519 the Gentiles. G1484 And G1161 they gave G191 him G846 audience G191 unto G891 this G5127 word, G3056 and G2532 then lifted up G1869 their G846 voices, G5456 and said, G3004 Away with G142 such G5108 a fellow from G575 the earth: G1093 for G1063 it is G2520 not G3756 fit G2520 that he G846 should live. G2198 And G1161 as they G846 cried out, G2905 and G2532 cast off G4495 their clothes, G2440 and G2532 threw G906 dust G2868 into G1519 the air, G109
Neither G3761 went I up G424 to G1519 Jerusalem G2414 to G4314 them which were apostles G652 before G4253 me; G1700 but G235 I went G565 into G1519 Arabia, G688 and G2532 returned G5290 again G3825 unto G1519 Damascus. G1154 Then G1899 after G3326 three G5140 years G2094 I went up G424 to G1519 Jerusalem G2414 to see G2477 Peter, G4074 and G2532 abode G1961 with G4314 him G846 fifteen G1178 days. G2250
Who both G2532 killed G615 the Lord G2962 Jesus, G2424 and G2532 their own G2398 prophets, G4396 and G2532 have persecuted G1559 us; G2248 and G2532 they please G700 not G3361 God, G2316 and G2532 are contrary G1727 to all G3956 men: G444 Forbidding G2967 us G2248 to speak G2980 to the Gentiles G1484 that G2443 they might be saved, G4982 to G1519 fill up G378 their G846 sins G266 alway: G3842 for G1161 the wrath G3709 is come G5348 upon G1909 them G846 to G1519 the uttermost. Commentary on Acts 9 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 9
In this chapter we have,
Act 9:1-9
We found mention made of Saul twice or thrice in the story of Stephen, for the sacred penman longed to come to his story; and now we are come to it, not quite taking leave of Peter but from henceforward being mostly taken up with Paul the apostle of the Gentiles, as Peter was of the circumcision. His name in Hebrew was Saul-desired, though as remarkably little in stature as his namesake king Saul was tall and stately; one of the ancients calls him, Homo tricubitalis-but four feet and a half in height; his Roman name which he went by among the citizens of Rome was Paul-little. He was born in Tarsus, a city of Cilicia, a free city of the Romans, and himself a freeman of that city. His father and mother were both native Jews; therefore he calls himself a Hebrew of the Hebrews; he was of the tribe of Benjamin, which adhered to Judah. His education was in the schools of Tarsus first, which was a little Athens for learning; there he acquainted himself with the philosophy and poetry of the Greeks. Thence he was sent to the university at Jerusalem, to study divinity and the Jewish law. His tutor was Gamaliel, an eminent Pharisee. He had extraordinary natural parts, and improved mightily in learning. He had likewise a handicraft trade (being bred to tent-making), which was common with those among the Jews who were bred scholars (as Dr. Lightfoot saith), for the earning of their maintenance, and the avoiding of idleness. This is the young man on whom the grace of God wrought this mighty change here recorded, about a year after the ascension of Christ, or little more. We are here told,
Act 9:10-22
As for God, his work is perfect; if he begin, he will make an end: a good work was begun in Saul, when he was brought to Christ's feet, in that word, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And never did Christ leave any that were brought to that. Though Saul was sadly mortified when he lay three days blind, yet he was not abandoned. Christ here takes care of the work of his own hands. He that hath torn will heal-that hath smitten will bind up-that hath convinced will comfort.
Act 9:23-31
Luke here makes no mention of Paul's journey into Arabia, which he tells us himself was immediately after his conversion, Gal. 1:16, 17. As soon as God had revealed his Son in him, that he might preach him, he went not up to Jerusalem, to receive instructions from the apostles (as any other convert would have done, that was designed for the ministry), but he went to Arabia, where there was new ground to break up, and where he would have opportunity of teaching, but not learning; thence he returned to Damascus, and there, three years after his conversion, this happened, which is here recorded.
Act 9:32-35
Here we have,
Act 9:36-43
Here we have another miracle wrought by Peter, for the confirming of the gospel, and which exceeded the former-the raising of Tabitha to life when she had been for some time dead. Here is,
