9 And it shall come to pass in that day, H3117 saith H5002 the Lord H136 GOD, H3069 that I will cause the sun H8121 to go down H935 at noon, H6672 and I will darken H2821 the earth H776 in the clear H216 day: H3117
She that hath borne H3205 seven H7651 languisheth: H535 she hath given up H5301 the ghost; H5315 her sun H8121 is gone H935 down while it was yet day: H3119 H3117 she hath been ashamed H954 and confounded: H2659 and the residue H7611 of them will I deliver H5414 to the sword H2719 before H6440 their enemies, H341 saith H5002 the LORD. H3068
Therefore night H3915 shall be unto you, that ye shall not have a vision; H2377 and it shall be dark H2821 H2821 unto you, that ye shall not divine; H7080 and the sun H8121 shall go down H935 over the prophets, H5030 and the day H3117 shall be dark H6937 over them.
Immediately G1161 G2112 after G3326 the tribulation G2347 of those G1565 days G2250 shall the sun G2246 be darkened, G4654 and G2532 the moon G4582 shall G1325 not G3756 give G1325 her G846 light, G5338 and G2532 the stars G792 shall fall G4098 from G575 heaven, G3772 and G2532 the powers G1411 of the heavens G3772 shall be shaken: G4531
Therefore is judgment H4941 far H7368 from us, neither doth justice H6666 overtake H5381 us: we wait H6960 for light, H216 but behold obscurity; H2822 for brightness, H5054 but we walk H1980 in darkness. H653 We grope H1659 for the wall H7023 like the blind, H5787 and we grope H1659 as if we had no eyes: H5869 we stumble H3782 at noonday H6672 as in the night; H5399 we are in desolate H820 places as dead H4191 men.
Seek him that maketh H6213 the seven stars H3598 and Orion, H3685 and turneth H2015 the shadow of death H6757 into the morning, H1242 and maketh the day H3117 dark H2821 with night: H3915 that calleth H7121 for the waters H4325 of the sea, H3220 and poureth them out H8210 upon the face H6440 of the earth: H776 The LORD H3068 is his name: H8034
For the stars H3556 of heaven H8064 and the constellations H3685 thereof shall not give H1984 their light: H216 the sun H8121 shall be darkened H2821 in his going forth, H3318 and the moon H3394 shall not cause her light H216 to shine. H5050
For, lo, he that formeth H3335 the mountains, H2022 and createth H1254 the wind, H7307 and declareth H5046 unto man H120 what is his thought, H7808 that maketh H6213 the morning H7837 darkness, H5890 and treadeth H1869 upon the high places H1116 of the earth, H776 The LORD, H3068 The God H430 of hosts, H6635 is his name. H8034
And G1161 when G1096 the sixth G1623 hour G5610 was come, G1096 there was G1096 darkness G4655 over G1909 the whole G3650 land G1093 until G2193 the ninth G1766 hour. G5610
And G1161 it was G2258 about G5616 the sixth G1623 hour, G5610 and G2532 there was G1096 a darkness G4655 over G1909 all G3650 the earth G1093 until G2193 the ninth G1766 hour. G5610
And G2532 I beheld G1492 when G3753 he had opened G455 the sixth G1623 seal, G4973 and, G2532 lo, G2400 there was G1096 a great G3173 earthquake; G4578 and G2532 the sun G2246 became G1096 black G3189 as G5613 sackcloth G4526 of hair, G5155 and G2532 the moon G4582 became G1096 as G5613 blood; G129
And G2532 the fourth G5067 angel G32 sounded, G4537 and G2532 the third part G5154 of the sun G2246 was smitten, G4141 and G2532 the third part G5154 of the moon, G4582 and G2532 the third part G5154 of the stars; G792 so as G2443 the third part G5154 of them G846 was darkened, G4654 and G2532 the day G2250 shone G5316 not G3361 for a third part G5154 of it, G846 and G2532 the night G3571 likewise. G3668
And the LORD H3068 said H559 unto Moses, H4872 Stretch out H5186 thine hand H3027 toward heaven, H8064 that there may be darkness H2822 over the land H776 of Egypt, H4714 even darkness H2822 which may be felt. H4959 And Moses H4872 stretched forth H5186 his hand H3027 toward heaven; H8064 and there was a thick H653 darkness H2822 in all the land H776 of Egypt H4714 three H7969 days: H3117 They saw H7200 not one H376 another, H251 neither rose H6965 any H376 from his place for three H7969 days: H3117 but all the children H1121 of Israel H3478 had light H216 in their dwellings. H4186
Stay H4102 yourselves, and wonder; H8539 cry ye out, H8173 and cry: H8173 they are drunken, H7937 but not with wine; H3196 they stagger, H5128 but not with strong drink. H7941 For the LORD H3068 hath poured out H5258 upon you the spirit H7307 of deep sleep, H8639 and hath closed H6105 your eyes: H5869 the prophets H5030 and your rulers, H7218 the seers H2374 hath he covered. Commentary on Amos 8 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 8
Sinful times are here attended with sorrowful times, so necessary is the connexion between them; it is threatened here again and again that the laughter shall be turned into mourning.
Amo 8:1-3
The great reason why sinners defer their repentance de die in diem-from day to day, is because they think God thus defers his judgments, and there is no song wherewith they so effectually sing themselves asleep as that, My Lord delays his coming; and therefore God, by his prophets, frequently represents to Israel the day of his wrath not only as just and certain, but as very near and hastening on apace; so he does in these verses.
Amo 8:4-10
God is here contending with proud oppressors, and showing them,
