31 And arms H2220 shall stand H5975 on his part, and they shall pollute H2490 the sanctuary H4720 of strength, H4581 and shall take away H5493 the daily H8548 sacrifice, and they shall place H5414 the abomination H8251 that maketh desolate. H8074
Yea, he magnified H1431 himself even to the prince H8269 of the host, H6635 and by him the daily H8548 sacrifice was taken away, H7311 H7311 and the place H4349 of his sanctuary H4720 was cast down. H7993 And an host H6635 was given H5414 him against the daily H8548 sacrifice by reason of transgression, H6588 and it cast down H7993 the truth H571 to the ground; H776 and it practised, H6213 and prospered. H6743 Then I heard H8085 one H259 saint H6918 speaking, H1696 and another H259 saint H6918 said H559 unto that certain H6422 saint which spake, H1696 How long shall be the vision H2377 concerning the daily H8548 sacrifice, and the transgression H6588 of desolation, H8074 to give H5414 both the sanctuary H6944 and the host H6635 to be trodden under foot? H4823
As for the beauty H6643 of his ornament, H5716 he set H7760 it in majesty: H1347 but they made H6213 the images H6754 of their abominations H8441 and of their detestable things H8251 therein: therefore have I set H5414 it far H5079 from them. And I will give H5414 it into the hands H3027 of the strangers H2114 for a prey, H957 and to the wicked H7563 of the earth H776 for a spoil; H7998 and they shall pollute H2490 it.
Speak H559 unto the house H1004 of Israel, H3478 Thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD; H3069 Behold, I will profane H2490 my sanctuary, H4720 the excellency H1347 of your strength, H5797 the desire H4261 of your eyes, H5869 and that which your soul H5315 pitieth; H4263 and your sons H1121 and your daughters H1323 whom ye have left H5800 shall fall H5307 by the sword. H2719 And ye shall do H6213 as I have done: H6213 ye shall not cover H5844 your lips, H8222 nor eat H398 the bread H3899 of men. H582
Beware G991 therefore, G3767 lest that G3361 come G1904 upon G1909 you, G5209 which is spoken of G2046 in G1722 the prophets; G4396 Behold, G1492 ye despisers, G2707 and G2532 wonder, G2296 and G2532 perish: G853 for G3754 I G1473 work G2038 a work G2041 in G1722 your G5216 days, G2250 a work G2041 which G3739 ye shall G4100 in no wise G3364 believe, G4100 though G1437 a man G5100 declare it G1555 unto you. Commentary on Daniel 11 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 11
The angel Gabriel, in this chapter, performs his promise made to Daniel in the foregoing chapter, that he would "show him what should befal his people in the latter days,' according to that which was "written in the scriptures of truth:' very particularly does he here foretel the succession of the kings of Persia and Grecia, and the affairs of their kingdoms, especially the mischief which Antiochus Epiphanes did in his time to the church, which was foretold before (ch. 8:11-12). Here is,
Dan 11:1-4
Here,
Dan 11:5-20
Here are foretold,
Dan 11:21-45
All this is a prophecy of the reign of Antiochus Epiphanes, the little horn spoken of before (ch. 8:9) a sworn enemy to the Jewish religion, and a bitter persecutor of those that adhered to it. What troubles the Jews met with in the reigns of the Persian kings were not so particularly foretold to Daniel as these, because then they had living prophets with them, Haggai and Zechariah, to encourage them; but these troubles in the days of Antiochus were foretold, because, before that time, prophecy would cease, and they would find it necessary to have recourse to the written word. Some things in this prediction concerning Antiochus are alluded to in the New-Testament predictions of the antichrist, especially v. 36, 37. And as it is usual with the prophets, when they foretel the prosperity of the Jewish church, to make use of such expressions as were applicable to the kingdom of Christ, and insensibly to slide into a prophecy of that, so, when they foretel the troubles of the church, they make use of such expressions as have a further reference to the kingdom of the antichrist, the rise and ruin of that. Now concerning Antiochus, the angel foretels here,
Of the kings that came after Antiochus nothing is here prophesied, for that was the most malicious mischievous enemy to the church, that was a type of the son of perdition, whom the Lord shall consume with the breath of his mouth and destroy with the brightness of his coming, and none shall help him.
