33 And they that understand H7919 among the people H5971 shall instruct H995 many: H7227 yet they shall fall H3782 by the sword, H2719 and by flame, H3852 by captivity, H7628 and by spoil, H961 many days. H3117
And G2532 it was given G1325 unto him G846 to make G4160 war G4171 with G3326 the saints, G40 and G2532 to overcome G3528 them: G846 and G2532 power G1849 was given G1325 him G846 over G1909 all G3956 kindreds, G5443 and G2532 tongues, G1100 and G2532 nations. G1484 And G2532 all G3956 that dwell G2730 upon G1909 the earth G1093 shall worship G4352 him, G846 whose G3739 names G3686 are G1125 not G3756 written G1125 in G1722 the book G976 of life G2222 of the Lamb G721 slain G4969 from G575 the foundation G2602 of the world. G2889 If any man G1536 have G2192 an ear, G3775 let him hear. G191 He that G1536 leadeth G4863 into captivity G161 shall go G5217 into G1519 captivity: G161 he that G1536 killeth G615 with G1722 the sword G3162 must G1163 be killed G615 with G1722 the sword. G3162 Here G5602 is G2076 the patience G5281 and G2532 the faith G4102 of the saints. G40
And G1161 others G2087 had G2983 trial G3984 of cruel mockings G1701 and G2532 scourgings, G3148 yea, G1161 moreover G2089 of bonds G1199 and G2532 imprisonment: G5438 They were stoned, G3034 they were sawn asunder, G4249 were tempted, G3985 were slain G599 with G1722 the sword: G5408 G3162 they wandered about G4022 in G1722 sheepskins G3374 and G1722 goatskins; G122 G1192 being destitute, G5302 afflicted, G2346 tormented; G2558 (Of whom G3739 the world G2889 was G2258 not G3756 worthy:) G514 they wandered G4105 in G1722 deserts, G2047 and G2532 in mountains, G3735 and G2532 in dens G4693 and G2532 caves G3692 of the earth. G1093
And G1161 the servant G1401 of the Lord G2962 must G1163 not G3756 strive; G3164 but G235 be G1511 gentle G2261 unto G4314 all G3956 men, apt to teach, G1317 patient, G420 In G1722 meekness G4236 instructing G3811 those that oppose themselves; G475 if G3379 God G2316 peradventure G3379 will give G1325 them G846 repentance G3341 to G1519 the acknowledging G1922 of the truth; G225
And the eyes H5869 of them that see H7200 shall not be dim, H8159 and the ears H241 of them that hear H8085 shall hearken. H7181 The heart H3824 also of the rash H4116 shall understand H995 knowledge, H1847 and the tongue H3956 of the stammerers H5926 shall be ready H4116 to speak H1696 plainly. H6703
And G1161 he killed G337 James G2385 the brother G80 of John G2491 with the sword. G3162 And G2532 because he saw G1492 it G3754 pleased G2076 G701 the Jews, G2453 he proceeded further G4369 to take G4815 Peter G4074 also. G2532 (Then G1161 were G2258 the days G2250 of unleavened bread.) G106
Being grieved G1278 that G1223 they G846 taught G1321 the people, G2992 and G2532 preached G2605 through G1722 Jesus G2424 the resurrection G386 from G1537 the dead. G3498 And G2532 they laid G1911 hands G5495 on them, G846 and G2532 put G5087 them in G1519 hold G5084 unto G1519 the next day: G839 for G1063 it was G2258 now G2235 eventide. G2073 Howbeit G1161 many G4183 of them which heard G191 the word G3056 believed; G4100 and G2532 the number G706 of the men G435 was G1096 about G5616 five G4002 thousand. G5505
And G1161 he said G2036 unto them, G846 These G3778 are the words G3056 which G3739 I spake G2980 unto G4314 you, G5209 while G5607 I was yet G2089 with G4862 you, G5213 that G3754 all things G3956 must G1163 be fulfilled, G4137 which G3588 were written G1125 in G1722 the law G3551 of Moses, G3475 and G2532 in the prophets, G4396 and G2532 in the psalms, G5568 concerning G4012 me. G1700 Then G5119 opened he G1272 their G846 understanding, G3563 that they might understand G4920 the scriptures, G1124 And G2532 said G2036 unto them, G846 Thus G3754 G3779 it is written, G1125 and G2532 thus G3779 it behoved G1163 Christ G5547 to suffer, G3958 and G2532 to rise G450 from G1537 the dead G3498 the third G5154 day: G2250 And G2532 that repentance G3341 and G2532 remission G859 of sins G266 should be preached G2784 in G1909 his G846 name G3686 among G1519 all G3956 nations, G1484 beginning G756 at G575 Jerusalem. G2419
Jesus G2424 saith G3004 unto them, G846 Have ye understood G4920 all G3956 these G5023 things? G3956 They say G3004 unto him, G846 Yea, G3483 Lord. G2962 Then G1161 said G2036 he unto them, G846 Therefore G1223 G5124 every G3956 scribe G1122 which is instructed G3100 unto G1519 the kingdom G932 of heaven G3772 is G2076 like G3664 unto a man G444 that is an householder, G3617 which G3748 bringeth forth G1544 out of G1537 his G846 treasure G2344 things new G2537 and G2532 old. G3820
Thus saith H559 the LORD H3068 of hosts; H6635 It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come H935 people, H5971 and the inhabitants H3427 of many H7227 cities: H5892 And the inhabitants H3427 of one H259 city shall go H1980 to another, H259 saying, H559 Let us go H3212 speedily H1980 to pray H2470 before H6440 the LORD, H3068 and to seek H1245 the LORD H3068 of hosts: H6635 I will go H3212 also. Yea, many H7227 people H5971 and strong H6099 nations H1471 shall come H935 to seek H1245 the LORD H3068 of hosts H6635 in Jerusalem, H3389 and to pray H2470 before H6440 the LORD. H3068 Thus saith H559 the LORD H3068 of hosts; H6635 In those days H3117 it shall come to pass, that ten H6235 men H582 shall take hold H2388 out of all languages H3956 of the nations, H1471 even shall take hold H2388 of the skirt H3671 of him that is a Jew, H376 H3064 saying, H559 We will go H3212 with you: for we have heard H8085 that God H430 is with you.
And they that be wise H7919 shall shine H2094 as the brightness H2096 of the firmament; H7549 and they that turn many H7227 to righteousness H6663 as the stars H3556 for ever H5769 and ever. H5703 But thou, O Daniel, H1840 shut up H5640 the words, H1697 and seal H2856 the book, H5612 even to the time H6256 of the end: H7093 many H7227 shall run to and fro, H7751 and knowledge H1847 shall be increased. Commentary on Daniel 11 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 11
The angel Gabriel, in this chapter, performs his promise made to Daniel in the foregoing chapter, that he would "show him what should befal his people in the latter days,' according to that which was "written in the scriptures of truth:' very particularly does he here foretel the succession of the kings of Persia and Grecia, and the affairs of their kingdoms, especially the mischief which Antiochus Epiphanes did in his time to the church, which was foretold before (ch. 8:11-12). Here is,
Dan 11:1-4
Here,
Dan 11:5-20
Here are foretold,
Dan 11:21-45
All this is a prophecy of the reign of Antiochus Epiphanes, the little horn spoken of before (ch. 8:9) a sworn enemy to the Jewish religion, and a bitter persecutor of those that adhered to it. What troubles the Jews met with in the reigns of the Persian kings were not so particularly foretold to Daniel as these, because then they had living prophets with them, Haggai and Zechariah, to encourage them; but these troubles in the days of Antiochus were foretold, because, before that time, prophecy would cease, and they would find it necessary to have recourse to the written word. Some things in this prediction concerning Antiochus are alluded to in the New-Testament predictions of the antichrist, especially v. 36, 37. And as it is usual with the prophets, when they foretel the prosperity of the Jewish church, to make use of such expressions as were applicable to the kingdom of Christ, and insensibly to slide into a prophecy of that, so, when they foretel the troubles of the church, they make use of such expressions as have a further reference to the kingdom of the antichrist, the rise and ruin of that. Now concerning Antiochus, the angel foretels here,
Of the kings that came after Antiochus nothing is here prophesied, for that was the most malicious mischievous enemy to the church, that was a type of the son of perdition, whom the Lord shall consume with the breath of his mouth and destroy with the brightness of his coming, and none shall help him.
