4 They drank H8355 wine, H2562 and praised H7624 the gods H426 of gold, H1722 and of silver, H3702 of brass, H5174 of iron, H6523 of wood, H636 and of stone. H69
The idols H6091 of the heathen H1471 are silver H3701 and gold, H2091 the work H4639 of men's H120 hands. H3027 They have mouths, H6310 but they speak H1696 not; eyes H5869 have they, but they see H7200 not; They have ears, H241 but they hear H238 not; neither is there H3426 any breath H7307 in their mouths. H6310 They that make H6213 them are like unto them: so is every one that trusteth H982 in them.
The workman H2796 melteth H5258 a graven image, H6459 and the goldsmith H6884 spreadeth H7554 it over with gold, H2091 and casteth H6884 silver H3701 chains. H7577 He that is so impoverished H5533 H5534 that he hath no oblation H8641 chooseth H977 a tree H6086 that will not rot; H7537 he seeketh H1245 unto him a cunning H2450 workman H2796 to prepare H3559 a graven image, H6459 that shall not be moved. H4131
Their idols H6091 are silver H3701 and gold, H2091 the work H4639 of men's H120 hands. H3027 They have mouths, H6310 but they speak H1696 not: eyes H5869 have they, but they see H7200 not: They have ears, H241 but they hear H8085 not: noses H639 have they, but they smell H7306 not: They have hands, H3027 but they handle H4184 not: feet H7272 have they, but they walk H1980 not: neither speak H1897 they through their throat. H1627 They that make H6213 them are like unto them; so is every one that trusteth H982 in them.
They lavish H2107 gold H2091 out of the bag, H3599 and weigh H8254 silver H3701 in the balance, H7070 and hire H7936 a goldsmith; H6884 and he maketh H6213 it a god: H410 they fall down, H5456 yea, they worship. H7812 They bear H5375 him upon the shoulder, H3802 they carry H5445 him, and set him in his place, H3240 and he standeth; H5975 from his place H4725 shall he not remove: H4185 yea, one shall cry H6817 unto him, yet can he not answer, H6030 nor save H3467 him out of his trouble. H6869
They deck H3302 it with silver H3701 and with gold; H2091 they fasten H2388 it with nails H4548 and with hammers, H4717 that it move H6328 not. They are upright H4749 as the palm tree, H8560 but speak H1696 not: they must needs H5375 be borne, H5375 because they cannot go. H6805 Be not afraid H3372 of them; for they cannot do evil, H7489 neither also is it in them to do good. H3190 Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; H3068 thou art great, H1419 and thy name H8034 is great H1419 in might. H1369 Who would not fear H3372 thee, O King H4428 of nations? H1471 for to thee doth it appertain: H2969 forasmuch as among all the wise H2450 men of the nations, H1471 and in all their kingdoms, H4438 there is none like unto thee. But they are altogether H259 brutish H1197 and foolish: H3688 the stock H6086 is a doctrine H4148 of vanities. H1892 Silver H3701 spread into plates H7554 is brought H935 from Tarshish, H8659 and gold H2091 from Uphaz, H210 the work H4639 of the workman, H2796 and of the hands H3027 of the founder: H6884 blue H8504 and purple H713 is their clothing: H3830 they are all the work H4639 of cunning H2450 men.
And G2532 the rest G3062 of the men G444 which G3739 were G615 not G3756 killed G615 by G1722 these G5025 plagues G4127 yet G3777 repented G3340 not G3777 of G1537 the works G2041 of their G846 hands, G5495 that G3363 they should G4352 not G3363 worship G4352 devils, G1140 and G2532 idols G1497 of gold, G5552 and G2532 silver, G693 and G2532 brass, G5470 and G2532 stone, G3035 and G2532 of wood: G3585 which G3739 neither G3777 can G1410 see, G991 nor G3777 hear, G191 nor G3777 walk: G4043 Neither G2532 G3756 repented they G3340 of G1537 their G846 murders, G5408 nor G3777 of G1537 their G846 sorceries, G5331 nor G3777 of G1537 their G846 fornication, G4202 nor G3777 of G1537 their G846 thefts. G2809
Then the lords H5633 of the Philistines H6430 gathered them together H622 for to offer H2076 a great H1419 sacrifice H2077 unto Dagon H1712 their god, H430 and to rejoice: H8057 for they said, H559 Our god H430 hath delivered H5414 Samson H8123 our enemy H341 into our hand. H3027 And when the people H5971 saw H7200 him, they praised H1984 their god: H430 for they said, H559 Our god H430 hath delivered H5414 into our hands H3027 our enemy, H341 and the destroyer H2717 of our country, H776 which slew H2491 many H7235 of us.
Nebuchadnezzar H5020 the king H4430 made H5648 an image H6755 of gold, H1722 whose height H7314 was threescore H8361 cubits, H521 and the breadth H6613 thereof six H8353 cubits: H521 he set it up H6966 in the plain H1236 of Dura, H1757 in the province H4083 of Babylon. H895 Then Nebuchadnezzar H5020 the king H4430 sent H7972 to gather together H3673 the princes, H324 the governors, H5460 and the captains, H6347 the judges, H148 the treasurers, H1411 the counsellors, H1884 the sheriffs, H8614 and all H3606 the rulers H7984 of the provinces, H4083 to come H858 to the dedication H2597 of the image H6755 which Nebuchadnezzar H5020 the king H4430 had set up. H6966 Then H116 the princes, H324 the governors, H5460 and captains, H6347 the judges, H148 the treasurers, H1411 the counsellors, H1884 the sheriffs, H8614 and all H3606 the rulers H7984 of the provinces, H4083 were gathered together H3673 unto the dedication H2597 of the image H6755 that Nebuchadnezzar H5020 the king H4430 had set up; H6966 and they stood H6966 before H6903 the image H6755 that Nebuchadnezzar H5020 had set up. H6966 Then an herald H3744 cried H7123 aloud, H2429 To you it is commanded, H560 O people, H5972 nations, H524 and languages, H3961 That at what time H5732 ye hear H8086 the sound H7032 of the cornet, H7162 flute, H4953 harp, H7030 H7030 sackbut, H5443 psaltery, H6460 dulcimer, H5481 and all H3606 kinds H2178 of musick, H2170 ye fall down H5308 and worship H5457 the golden H1722 image H6755 that Nebuchadnezzar H5020 the king H4430 hath set up: H6966 And whoso H4479 falleth H5308 not H3809 down H5308 and worshippeth H5457 shall the same hour H8160 be cast H7412 into the midst H1459 of a burning H3345 fiery H5135 furnace. H861 Therefore H6903 H1836 at that time, H2166 when H1768 all H3606 the people H5972 heard H8086 the sound H7032 of the cornet, H7162 flute, H4953 harp, H7030 H7030 sackbut, H5443 psaltery, H6460 and all H3606 kinds H2178 of musick, H2170 all H3606 the people, H5972 the nations, H524 and the languages, H3961 fell down H5308 and worshipped H5457 the golden H1722 image H6755 that Nebuchadnezzar H5020 the king H4430 had set up. H6966 Wherefore H6903 H3606 at that H1836 time H2166 certain H1400 Chaldeans H3779 came near, H7127 and accused H7170 H399 the Jews. H3062 They spake H6032 and said H560 to the king H4430 Nebuchadnezzar, H5020 O king, H4430 live H2418 for ever. H5957 Thou, H607 O king, H4430 hast made H7761 a decree, H2942 that every H3606 man H606 that shall hear H8086 the sound H7032 of the cornet, H7162 flute, H4953 harp, H7030 H7030 sackbut, H5443 psaltery, H6460 and dulcimer, H5481 H5481 and all H3606 kinds H2178 of musick, H2170 shall fall down H5308 and worship H5457 the golden H1722 image: H6755 And whoso H4479 falleth H5308 not H3809 down H5308 and worshippeth, H5457 that he should be cast H7412 into the midst H1459 of a burning H3345 fiery H5135 furnace. H861 There are H383 certain H1400 Jews H3062 whom H3487 thou hast set H4483 over H5922 the affairs H5673 of the province H4083 of Babylon, H895 Shadrach, H7715 Meshach, H4336 and Abednego; H5665 these H479 men, H1400 O king, H4430 have H7761 not H3809 regarded H2942 thee: H5922 they serve H6399 not H3809 thy gods, H426 nor H3809 worship H5457 the golden H1722 image H6755 which thou hast set up. H6966 Then H116 Nebuchadnezzar H5020 in his rage H7266 and fury H2528 commanded H560 to bring H858 Shadrach, H7715 Meshach, H4336 and Abednego. H5665 Then H116 they brought H858 these H479 men H1400 before H6925 the king. H4430 Nebuchadnezzar H5020 spake H6032 and said H560 unto them, Is it true, H6656 O Shadrach, H7715 Meshach, H4336 and Abednego, H5665 do not H3809 ye H383 serve H6399 my gods, H426 nor H3809 worship H5457 the golden H1722 image H6755 which I have set H6966 up? Now H3705 if H2006 ye be H383 ready H6263 that at what time H5732 ye hear H8086 the sound H7032 of the cornet, H7162 flute, H4953 harp, H7030 H7030 sackbut, H5443 psaltery, H6460 and dulcimer, H5481 and all H3606 kinds H2178 of musick, H2170 ye fall down H5308 and worship H5457 the image H6755 which I have made; H5648 well: but if H2006 ye worship H5457 not, H3809 ye shall be cast H7412 the same hour H8160 into the midst H1459 of a burning H3345 fiery H5135 furnace; H861 and who H4479 is that God H426 that shall deliver H7804 you out of H4481 my hands? H3028 Shadrach, H7715 Meshach, H4336 and Abednego, H5665 answered H6032 and said H560 to the king, H4430 O Nebuchadnezzar, H5020 we H586 are not H3809 careful H2818 to answer H8421 thee in H5922 this H1836 matter. H6600 If H2006 it be so, our God H426 whom we H586 serve H6399 is H383 able H3202 to deliver H7804 us from H4481 the burning H3345 fiery H5135 furnace, H861 and H4481 he will deliver H7804 us out of H4481 thine hand, H3028 O king. H4430 But if H2006 not, H3809 be it H1934 known H3046 unto thee, O king, H4430 that we will H383 not H3809 serve H6399 thy gods, H426 nor H3809 worship H5457 the golden H1722 image H6755 which thou hast set up. H6966
For she did not know H3045 that I gave H5414 her corn, H1715 and wine, H8492 and oil, H3323 and multiplied H7235 her silver H3701 and gold, H2091 which they prepared H6213 for Baal. H1168 Therefore will I return, H7725 and take away H3947 my corn H1715 in the time H6256 thereof, and my wine H8492 in the season H4150 thereof, and will recover H5337 my wool H6785 and my flax H6593 given to cover H3680 her nakedness. H6172 And now will I discover H1540 her lewdness H5040 in the sight H5869 of her lovers, H157 and none H376 shall deliver H5337 her out of mine hand. H3027 I will also cause all her mirth H4885 to cease, H7673 her feast days, H2282 her new moons, H2320 and her sabbaths, H7676 and all her solemn feasts. H4150 And I will destroy H8074 her vines H1612 and her fig trees, H8384 whereof she hath said, H559 These are my rewards H866 that my lovers H157 have given H5414 me: and I will make H7760 them a forest, H3293 and the beasts H2416 of the field H7704 shall eat H398 them. And I will visit H6485 upon her the days H3117 of Baalim, H1168 wherein she burned incense H6999 to them, and she decked H5710 herself with her earrings H5141 and her jewels, H2484 and she went H3212 after H310 her lovers, H157 and forgat H7911 me, saith H5002 the LORD. H3068
For G1063 a certain G5100 man named G3686 Demetrius, G1216 a silversmith, G695 which made G4160 silver G693 shrines G3485 for Diana, G735 brought G3930 no G3756 small G3641 gain G2039 unto the craftsmen; G5079 Whom G3739 he called together G4867 with the workmen G2040 of G4012 like occupation, G5108 and G2532 said, G2036 Sirs, G435 ye know G1987 that G3754 by G1537 this G5026 craft G2039 we have G2076 our G2257 wealth. G2142 Moreover G2532 ye see G2334 and G2532 hear, G191 that G3754 not G3756 alone G3440 at Ephesus, G2181 but G235 almost G4975 throughout all G3956 Asia, G773 this G3778 Paul G3972 hath persuaded G3982 and turned away G3179 much G2425 people, G3793 saying G3004 that G3754 they be G1526 no G3756 gods, G2316 which G3588 are made G1096 with G1223 hands: G5495 So G1161 that not G3756 only G3440 this G5124 our G2254 craft G3313 is in danger G2793 to be set G2064 at G1519 nought; G557 but G235 also G2532 that the temple G2411 of the great G3173 goddess G2299 Diana G735 should be despised, G1519 G3762 G3049 and G1161 G2532 her G846 magnificence G3168 should G3195 be destroyed, G2507 whom G3739 all G3650 Asia G773 and G2532 the world G3625 worshippeth. G4576 And G1161 when they heard G191 these sayings, they were G1096 full G4134 of wrath, G2372 and G2532 cried out, G2896 saying, G3004 Great G3173 is Diana G735 of the Ephesians. G2180

Commentary on Daniel 5 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 5
The destruction of the kingdom of Babylon had been long and often foretold when it was at a distance; in this chapter we have it accomplished, and a prediction of it the very same night that it was accomplished. Belshazzar now reigned in Babylon; some compute he had reigned seventeen years, others but three; we have here the story of his exit and the period of his kingdom. We must know that about two years before this Cyrus king of Persia, a growing monarch, came against Babylon with a great army; Belshazzar met him, fought him, and was routed by him in a pitched battle. He and his scattered forces retired into the city, where Cyrus besieged them. They were very secure, because the river Euphrates was their bulwark, and they had twenty years; provision in the city; but in the second year of the siege he took it, as is here related. We have in this chapter,
Dan 5:1-9
We have here Belshazzar the king very gay, but all of a sudden very gloomy, and in straits in the fulness of his sufficiency. See how he affronts God, and God affrights him; and wait what will be the issue of this contest; and whether he that hardened his heart against God prospered.
