16 I came near H7127 unto H5922 one H2298 of H4481 them that stood by, H6966 and asked H1156 him H4481 the truth H3330 of all H3606 this. H1836 So he told H560 me, and made me know H3046 the interpretation H6591 of the things. H4406
And G2532 one G1520 of G1537 the elders G4245 answered, G611 saying G3004 unto me, G3427 What G5101 are G1526 these G3778 which G3588 are arrayed in G4016 white G3022 robes? G4749 and G2532 whence G4159 came they? G2064 And G2532 I said G2046 unto him, G846 Sir, G2962 thou G4771 knowest. G1492 And G2532 he said G2036 to me, G3427 These G3778 are they G1526 which came G2064 out of G1537 great G3173 tribulation, G2347 and G2532 have washed G4150 their G846 robes, G4749 and G2532 made G3021 them G4749 G846 white G3021 in G1722 the blood G129 of the Lamb. G721
Then I heard H8085 one H259 saint H6918 speaking, H1696 and another H259 saint H6918 said H559 unto that certain H6422 saint which spake, H1696 How long shall be the vision H2377 concerning the daily H8548 sacrifice, and the transgression H6588 of desolation, H8074 to give H5414 both the sanctuary H6944 and the host H6635 to be trodden under foot? H4823 And he said H559 unto me, Unto two thousand H505 and three H7969 hundred H3967 days; H6153 H1242 then shall the sanctuary H6944 be cleansed. H6663 And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, H1840 had seen H7200 the vision, H2377 and sought H1245 for the meaning, H998 then, behold, there stood H5975 before me as the appearance H4758 of a man. H1397 And I heard H8085 a man's H120 voice H6963 between the banks of Ulai, H195 which called, H7121 and said, H559 Gabriel, H1403 make this H1975 man to understand H995 the vision. H4758
Then I lifted up H5375 mine eyes, H5869 and looked, H7200 and behold a certain H259 man H376 clothed H3847 in linen, H906 whose loins H4975 were girded H2296 with fine gold H3800 of Uphaz: H210 His body H1472 also was like the beryl, H8658 and his face H6440 as the appearance H4758 of lightning, H1300 and his eyes H5869 as lamps H3940 of fire, H784 and his arms H2220 and his feet H4772 like in colour H5869 to polished H7044 brass, H5178 and the voice H6963 of his words H1697 like the voice H6963 of a multitude. H1995
And he said H559 unto me, O Daniel, H1840 a man H376 greatly beloved, H2532 understand H995 the words H1697 that I speak H1696 unto thee, and stand H5975 upright: H5977 for unto thee am I now sent. H7971 And when he had spoken H1696 this word H1697 unto me, I stood H5975 trembling. H7460 Then said H559 he unto me, Fear H3372 not, Daniel: H1840 for from the first H7223 day H3117 that thou didst set H5414 thine heart H3820 to understand, H995 and to chasten H6031 thyself before H6440 thy God, H430 thy words H1697 were heard, H8085 and I am come H935 for thy words. H1697
Then I Daniel H1840 looked, H7200 and, behold, there stood H5975 other H312 two, H8147 the one H259 on this side H2008 of the bank H8193 of the river, H2975 and the other H259 on that side of the bank H8193 of the river. H2975 And one said H559 to the man H376 clothed H3847 in linen, H906 which was upon H4605 the waters H4325 of the river, H2975 How long shall it be to the end H7093 of these wonders? H6382
I saw H7200 by night, H3915 and behold a man H376 riding H7392 upon a red H122 horse, H5483 and he stood H5975 among the myrtle trees H1918 that were in the bottom; H4699 and behind H310 him were there red H122 horses, H5483 speckled, H8320 and white. H3836 Then said H559 I, O my lord, H113 what are these? And the angel H4397 that talked H1696 with me said H559 unto me, I will shew H7200 thee what these be. And the man H376 that stood H5975 among the myrtle trees H1918 answered H6030 and said, H559 These are they whom the LORD H3068 hath sent H7971 to walk H1980 to and fro through the earth. H776 And they answered H6030 the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 that stood H5975 among the myrtle trees, H1918 and said, H559 We have walked to and fro H1980 through the earth, H776 and, behold, all the earth H776 sitteth still, H3427 and is at rest. Commentary on Daniel 7 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 7
The six former chapters of this book were historical; we now enter with fear and trembling upon the six latter, which are prophetical, wherein are many things dark and hard to be understood, which we dare not positively determine the sense of, and yet many things plain and profitable, which I trust God will enable us to make a good use of. In this chapter we have,
Whether those visions look as far forward as the end of time, or whether they were to have a speedy accomplishment, is hard to say, nor are the most judicious interpreters agreed concerning it.
Dan 7:1-8
The date of this chapter places it before ch. 5, which was in the last year of Belshazzar, and ch. 6, which was in the first of Darius; for Daniel had those visions in the first year of Belshazzar, when the captivity of the Jews in Babylon was drawing near a period. Belshazzar's name here is, in the original, spelt differently from what it used to be; before it was Bel-she-azar-Bel is he that treasures up riches. But this is Bel-eshe-zar-Bel is on fire by the enemy. Bel was the god of the Chaldeans; he had prospered, but is now to be consumed.
We have, in these verses, Daniel's vision of the four monarchies that were oppressive to the Jews. Observe,
Dan 7:9-14
Whether we understand the fourth beast to signify the Syrian empire, or the Roman, or the former as the figure of the latter, it is plain that these verses are intended for the comfort and support of the people of God in reference to the persecutions they were likely to sustain both from the one and from the other, and from all their proud enemies in every age; for it is written for their learning on whom the ends of the world have come, that they also, through patience and comfort of this scripture, might have hope. Three things are here discovered that are very encouraging:-
Dan 7:15-28
Here we have,
Daniel, in the close, when he ends that matter, tells us what impressions this vision made upon him; it overwhelmed his spirits to such a degree that his countenance was changed, and it made him look pale; but he kept the matter in his heart. Note, The heart must be the treasury and store-house of divine things; there we must hide God's word, as the Virgin Mary kept the sayings of Christ, Lu. 2:51. Daniel kept the matter in his heart, with a design, not to keep it from the church, but to keep it for the church, that what he had received from the Lord he might fully and faithfully deliver to the people. Note, It concerns God's prophets and ministers to treasure up the things of God in their minds, and there to digest them well. If we would have God's word ready in our mouths when we have occasion for it, we must keep it in our hearts at all times.
