10 And there arose H6965 not a prophet H5030 since H5750 in Israel H3478 like unto Moses, H4872 whom the LORD H3068 knew H3045 face H6440 to face, H6440
And he said, H559 Hear H8085 now my words: H1697 If there be a prophet H5030 among you, I the LORD H3068 will make myself known H3045 unto him in a vision, H4759 and will speak H1696 unto him in a dream. H2472 My servant H5650 Moses H4872 is not so, who is faithful H539 in all mine house. H1004 With him will I speak H1696 mouth H6310 to mouth, H6310 even apparently, H4758 and not in dark speeches; H2420 and the similitude H8544 of the LORD H3068 shall he behold: H5027 wherefore then were ye not afraid H3372 to speak H1696 against my servant H5650 Moses? H4872
The LORD H3068 talked H1696 with you face H6440 to face H6440 in the mount H2022 out of the midst H8432 of the fire, H784 (I stood H5975 between the LORD H3068 and you at that time, H6256 to shew H5046 you the word H1697 of the LORD: H3068 for ye were afraid H3372 by reason H6440 of the fire, H784 and went not up H5927 into the mount;) H2022 saying, H559
The LORD H3068 thy God H430 will raise up H6965 unto thee a Prophet H5030 from the midst H7130 of thee, of thy brethren, H251 like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; H8085 According to all that thou desiredst H7592 of the LORD H3068 thy God H430 in Horeb H2722 in the day H3117 of the assembly, H6951 saying, H559 Let me not hear H8085 again H3254 the voice H6963 of the LORD H3068 my God, H430 neither let me see H7200 this great H1419 fire H784 any more, that I die H4191 not. And the LORD H3068 said H559 unto me, They have well H3190 spoken that which they have spoken. H1696 I will raise them up H6965 a Prophet H5030 from among H7130 their brethren, H251 like unto thee, and will put H5414 my words H1697 in his mouth; H6310 and he shall speak H1696 unto them all that I shall command H6680 him.
For G1063 Moses G3475 truly G3303 said G2036 unto G4314 the fathers, G3962 G3754 A prophet G4396 shall G450 the Lord G2962 your G5216 God G2316 raise up G450 unto you G5213 of G1537 your G5216 brethren, G80 like G5613 unto me; G1691 him G846 shall ye hear G191 in G2596 all things G3956 whatsoever G3745 G302 he shall say G2980 unto G4314 you. G5209 And G1161 it shall come to pass, G2071 that every G3956 soul, G5590 which G3748 G302 will G191 not G3361 hear G191 that G1565 prophet, G4396 shall be destroyed G1842 from among G1537 the people. G2992
And G2532 Moses G3475 verily G3303 was faithful G4103 in G1722 all G3650 his G846 house, G3624 as G5613 a servant, G2324 for G1519 a testimony G3142 of those things which were to be spoken after; G2980 But G1161 Christ G5547 as G5613 a son G5207 over G1909 his own G846 house; G3624 whose G3739 house G3624 are G2070 we, G2249 if G1437 G4007 we hold fast G2722 the confidence G3954 and G2532 the rejoicing G2745 of the hope G1680 firm G949 unto G3360 the end. Commentary on Deuteronomy 34 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 34
Having read how Moses finished his testimony, we are told here how he immediately after finished his life. This chapter could not be written by Moses himself, but was added by Joshua or Eleazar, or, as bishop Patrick conjectures, by Samuel, who was a prophet, and wrote by divine authority what he found in the records of Joshua, and his successors the judges. We have had an account of his dying words, here we have an account of his dying work, and that is work we must all do shortly, and it had need be well done. Here is,

We have here a very honourable encomium passed both on Moses and Joshua; each has his praise, and should have. It is ungrateful so to magnify our living friends as to forget the merits of those that are gone, to whose memories there is a debt of honour due: all the respect must not be paid to the rising sun; and, on the other hand, it is unjust so to cry up the merits of those that are gone as to despise the benefit we have in those that survive and succeed them. Let God be glorified in both, as here.
