37 Whereas H3588 thou hast searched H4959 all my stuff, H3627 what hast thou found H4672 of all thy household H1004 stuff? H3627 set H7760 it here H3541 before my brethren H251 and thy brethren, H251 that they may judge H3198 betwixt H996 us both. H8147
With whomsoever H834 thou findest H4672 thy gods, H430 let him not live: H2421 before H5048 our brethren H251 discern H5234 thou what is thine with me, and take H3947 it to thee. For Jacob H3290 knew H3045 not that Rachel H7354 had stolen H1589 them.
And they took H3947 them out of the midst H8432 of the tent, H168 and brought H935 them unto Joshua, H3091 and unto all the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 and laid them out H3332 before H6440 the LORD. H3068
Behold, here I am: witness H6030 against me before the LORD, H3068 and before his anointed: H4899 whose ox H7794 have I taken? H3947 or whose ass H2543 have I taken? H3947 or whom have I defrauded? H6231 whom have I oppressed? H7533 or of whose hand H3027 have I received any bribe H3724 to blind H5956 mine eyes H5869 therewith? and I will restore H7725 it you. And they said, H559 Thou hast not defrauded H6231 us, nor oppressed H7533 us, neither hast thou taken H3947 ought H3972 of any man's H376 hand. H3027
But G1161 if G3362 he will G191 not G3362 hear G191 thee, then take G3880 with G3326 thee G4675 one G1520 or G2228 two G1417 more, G2089 that G2443 in G1909 the mouth G4750 of two G1417 or G2228 three G5140 witnesses G3144 every G3956 word G4487 may be established. G2476
If G1437 then G3303 G3767 ye have G2192 judgments G2922 of things pertaining to this life, G982 set G2523 them G5128 to judge who are least esteemed G1848 in G1722 the church. G1577 I speak G3004 to your G5213 shame. G4314 G1791 Is it so, G3779 that there G2076 is not G3756 a wise man G4680 among G1722 you? G5213 no, not G3761 one G1520 that G3739 shall be able G1410 to judge G1252 between G303 G3319 his G846 brethren? G80
Pray G4336 for G4012 us: G2257 for G1063 G3754 we trust G3982 we have G2192 a good G2570 conscience, G4893 in G1722 all things G3956 willing G2309 to live G390 honestly. G2573
Having G2192 your G5216 conversation G391 honest G2570 among G1722 the Gentiles: G1484 that, G2443 whereas G1722 G3739 they speak against G2635 you G5216 as G5613 evildoers, G2555 they may G1392 by G1537 your good G2570 works, G2041 which they shall behold, G2029 glorify G1392 God G2316 in G1722 the day G2250 of visitation. Commentary on Genesis 31 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 31
Jacob was a very honest good man, a man of great devotion and integrity, yet he had more trouble and vexation than any of the patriarchs. He left his father's house in a fright, went to his uncle's in distress, very hard usage he met with there, and now is going back surrounded with fears. Here is,
Gen 31:1-16
Jacob is here taking up a resolution immediately to quit his uncle's service, to take what he had and go back to Canaan. This resolution he took up upon a just provocation, by divine direction, and with the advice and consent of his wives.
Gen 31:17-24
Here is,
Gen 31:25-35
We have here the reasoning, not to say the rallying, that took place between Laban and Jacob at their meeting, in that mountain which was afterwards called Gilead, v. 25. Here is,
Gen 31:36-42
See in these verses,
Gen 31:43-55
We have here the compromising of the matter between Laban and Jacob. Laban had nothing to say in reply to Jacob's remonstrance: he could neither justify himself nor condemn Jacob, but was convicted by his own conscience of the wrong he had done him; and therefore desires to hear no more of the matter He is not willing to own himself in a fault, nor to ask Jacob's forgiveness, and make him satisfaction, as he ought to have done. But,
Lastly, After all this angry parley, they part friends, v. 55. Laban very affectionately kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them, and then went back in peace. Note, God is often better to us than our fears, and strangely overrules the spirits of men in our favour, beyond what we could have expected; for it is not in vain to trust in him.
