11 He stretched out H5186 his hand H3027 over the sea, H3220 he shook H7264 the kingdoms: H4467 the LORD H3068 hath given a commandment H6680 against the merchant H3667 city, to destroy H8045 the strong H4581 holds H4581 thereof.
And Tyrus H6865 did build H1129 herself a strong hold, H4692 and heaped up H6651 silver H3701 as the dust, H6083 and fine gold H2742 as the mire H2916 of the streets. H2351 Behold, the Lord H136 will cast her out, H3423 and he will smite H5221 her power H2428 in the sea; H3220 and she shall be devoured H398 with fire. H784
He is a merchant, H3667 the balances H3976 of deceit H4820 are in his hand: H3027 he loveth H157 to oppress. H6231 And Ephraim H669 said, H559 Yet I am become rich, H6238 I have found me out H4672 substance: H202 in all my labours H3018 they shall find H4672 none iniquity H5771 in me that were sin. H2399
In the time H6256 when thou shalt be broken H7665 by the seas H3220 in the depths H4615 of the waters H4325 thy merchandise H4627 and all thy company H6951 in the midst H8432 of thee shall fall. H5307 All the inhabitants H3427 of the isles H339 shall be astonished H8074 at thee, and their kings H4428 shall be sore H8178 afraid, H8175 they shall be troubled H7481 in their countenance. H6440
Thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD H3069 to Tyrus; H6865 Shall not the isles H339 shake H7493 at the sound H6963 of thy fall, H4658 when the wounded H2491 cry, H602 when the slaughter H2027 is made H2026 in the midst H8432 of thee? Then all the princes H5387 of the sea H3220 shall come down H3381 from their thrones, H3678 and lay away H5493 their robes, H4598 and put off H6584 their broidered H7553 garments: H899 they shall clothe H3847 themselves with trembling; H2731 they shall sit H3427 upon the ground, H776 and shall tremble H2729 at every moment, H7281 and be astonished H8074 at thee. And they shall take up H5375 a lamentation H7015 for thee, and say H559 to thee, How art thou destroyed, H6 that wast inhabited H3427 of seafaring men, H3220 the renowned H1984 city, H5892 which wast strong H2389 in the sea, H3220 she and her inhabitants, H3427 which cause H5414 their terror H2851 to be on all that haunt H3427 it! Now shall the isles H339 tremble H2729 in the day H3117 of thy fall; H4658 yea, the isles H339 that are in the sea H3220 shall be troubled H926 at thy departure. H3318 For thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD; H3069 When I shall make H5414 thee a desolate H2717 city, H5892 like the cities H5892 that are not inhabited; H3427 when I shall bring up H5927 the deep H8415 upon thee, and great H7227 waters H4325 shall cover H3680 thee;
They that see H7200 thee shall narrowly look H7688 upon thee, and consider H995 thee, saying, Is this the man H376 that made the earth H776 to tremble, H7264 that did shake H7493 kingdoms; H4467 That made H7760 the world H8398 as a wilderness, H4057 and destroyed H2040 the cities H5892 thereof; that opened H6605 not the house H1004 of his prisoners? H615
And with the blast H7307 of thy nostrils H639 the waters H4325 were gathered together, H6192 the floods H5140 stood upright H5324 as an heap, H5067 and the depths H8415 were congealed H7087 in the heart H3820 of the sea. H3220 The enemy H341 said, H559 I will pursue, H7291 I will overtake, H5381 I will divide H2505 the spoil; H7998 my lust H5315 shall be satisfied H4390 upon them; I will draw H7324 my sword, H2719 my hand H3027 shall destroy H3423 them. Thou didst blow H5398 with thy wind, H7307 the sea H3220 covered H3680 them: they sank H6749 as lead H5777 in the mighty H117 waters. H4325
And Canaan H3667 begat H3205 Sidon H6721 his firstborn, H1060 and Heth, H2845 And the Jebusite, H2983 and the Amorite, H567 and the Girgasite, H1622 And the Hivite, H2340 and the Arkite, H6208 and the Sinite, H5513 And the Arvadite, H721 and the Zemarite, H6786 and the Hamathite: H2577 and afterward H310 were the families H4940 of the Canaanites H3669 spread abroad. H6327 And the border H1366 of the Canaanites H3669 was from Sidon, H6721 as thou comest H935 to Gerar, H1642 unto Gaza; H5804 as thou goest, H935 unto Sodom, H5467 and Gomorrah, H6017 and Admah, H126 and Zeboim, H6636 even unto Lasha. Commentary on Isaiah 23 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 23
This chapter is concerning Tyre, an ancient wealthy city, situated upon the sea, and for many ages one of the most celebrated cities for trade and merchandise in those parts of the world. The lot of the tribe of Asher bordered upon it. See Joshua 19:29, where it is called "the strong city Tyre.' We seldom find it a dangerous enemy to Israel, but sometimes their faithful ally, as in the reigns of David and Solomon; for trading cities maintain their grandeur, not by the conquest of their neighbours, but by commerce with them. In this chapter is foretold,
Isa 23:1-14
Tyre being a sea-port town, this prophecy of its overthrow fitly begins and ends with, Howl, you ships of Tarshish; for all its business, wealth, and honour, depended upon its shipping; if that be ruined, they will be all undone. Observe,
Isa 23:15-18
