1 Woe H1945 to the crown H5850 of pride, H1348 to the drunkards H7910 of Ephraim, H669 whose glorious H6643 beauty H8597 is a fading H5034 flower, H6731 which are on the head H7218 of the fat H8081 valleys H1516 of them that are overcome H1986 with wine! H3196
In the day H3117 of our king H4428 the princes H8269 have made him sick H2470 with bottles H2534 of wine; H3196 he stretched out H4900 his hand H3027 with scorners. H3945
But they H428 also have erred H7686 through wine, H3196 and through strong drink H7941 are out of the way; H8582 the priest H3548 and the prophet H5030 have erred H7686 through strong drink, H7941 they are swallowed up H1104 of H4480 wine, H3196 they are out of the way H8582 through strong drink; H7941 they err H7686 in vision, H7203 they stumble H6328 in judgment. H6417
The crown H5850 of pride, H1348 the drunkards H7910 of Ephraim, H669 shall be trodden H7429 under feet: H7272 And the glorious H6643 beauty, H8597 which is on the head H7218 of the fat H8081 valley, H1516 shall be a fading H5034 flower, H6733 and as the hasty fruit H1061 before the summer; H7019 which when he that looketh H7200 upon it seeth, H7200 while it is yet in his hand H3709 he eateth it up. H1104
And all the people H5971 shall know, H3045 even Ephraim H669 and the inhabitant H3427 of Samaria, H8111 that say H559 in the pride H1346 and stoutness H1433 of heart, H3824
But ye gave the Nazarites H5139 wine H3196 to drink; H8248 and commanded H6680 the prophets, H5030 saying, H559 Prophesy H5012 not.
And the pride H1347 of Israel H3478 doth testify H6030 to his face: H6440 therefore shall Israel H3478 and Ephraim H669 fall H3782 in their iniquity; H5771 Judah H3063 also shall fall H3782 with them.
He restored H7725 the coast H1366 of Israel H3478 from the entering H935 of Hamath H2574 unto the sea H3220 of the plain, H6160 according to the word H1697 of the LORD H3068 God H430 of Israel, H3478 which he spake H1696 by the hand H3027 of his servant H5650 Jonah, H3124 the son H1121 of Amittai, H573 the prophet, H5030 which was of Gathhepher. H1662 For the LORD H3068 saw H7200 the affliction H6040 of Israel, H3478 that it was very H3966 bitter: H4784 for there was not H657 any shut up, H6113 nor any left, H5800 nor any helper H5826 for Israel. H3478 And the LORD H3068 said H1696 not that he would blot out H4229 the name H8034 of Israel H3478 from under heaven: H8064 but he saved H3467 them by the hand H3027 of Jeroboam H3379 the son H1121 of Joash. H3101
For before the child H5288 shall have knowledge H3045 to cry, H7121 My father, H1 and my mother, H517 the riches H2428 of Damascus H1834 and the spoil H7998 of Samaria H8111 shall be taken away H5375 before H6440 the king H4428 of Assyria. H804
For the head H7218 of Syria H758 is Damascus, H1834 and the head H7218 of Damascus H1834 is Rezin; H7526 and within threescore H8346 and five H2568 years H8141 shall Ephraim H669 be broken, H2865 that it be not a people. H5971 And the head H7218 of Ephraim H669 is Samaria, H8111 and the head H7218 of Samaria H8111 is Remaliah's H7425 son. H1121 If ye will not believe, H539 surely ye shall not be established. H539
Woe H1945 unto them that rise up early H7925 in the morning, H1242 that they may follow H7291 strong drink; H7941 that continue H309 until night, H5399 till wine H3196 inflame H1814 them!
Who hath woe? H188 who hath sorrow? H17 who hath contentions? H4079 H4066 who hath babbling? H7879 who hath wounds H6482 without cause? H2600 who hath redness H2448 of eyes? H5869
So the posts H7323 went H3212 with the letters H107 from H3027 the king H4428 and his princes H8269 throughout all Israel H3478 and Judah, H3063 and according to the commandment H4687 of the king, H4428 saying, H559 Ye children H1121 of Israel, H3478 turn again H7725 unto the LORD H3068 God H430 of Abraham, H85 Isaac, H3327 and Israel, H3478 and he will return H7725 to the remnant H7604 of you, that are escaped H6413 out of the hand H3709 of the kings H4428 of Assyria. H804 And be not ye like your fathers, H1 and like your brethren, H251 which trespassed H4603 against the LORD H3068 God H430 of their fathers, H1 who therefore gave them up H5414 to desolation, H8047 as ye see. H7200
For Pekah H6492 the son H1121 of Remaliah H7425 slew H2026 in Judah H3063 an hundred H3967 and twenty H6242 thousand H505 in one H259 day, H3117 which were all valiant H2428 men; H1121 because they had forsaken H5800 the LORD H3068 God H430 of their fathers. H1
And at the end H7097 of three H7969 years H8141 they took H3920 it: even in the sixth H8337 year H8141 of Hezekiah, H2396 that is the ninth H8672 year H8141 of Hoshea H1954 king H4428 of Israel, H3478 Samaria H8111 was taken. H3920 And the king H4428 of Assyria H804 did carry away H1540 Israel H3478 unto Assyria, H804 and put H5148 them in Halah H2477 and in Habor H2249 by the river H5104 of Gozan, H1470 and in the cities H5892 of the Medes: H4074 Because they obeyed H8085 not the voice H6963 of the LORD H3068 their God, H430 but transgressed H5674 his covenant, H1285 and all that Moses H4872 the servant H5650 of the LORD H3068 commanded, H6680 and would not hear H8085 them, nor do H6213 them.
In the days H3117 of Pekah H6492 king H4428 of Israel H3478 came H935 Tiglathpileser H8407 king H4428 of Assyria, H804 and took H3947 Ijon, H5859 and Abelbethmaachah, H62 and Janoah, H3239 and Kedesh, H6943 and Hazor, H2674 and Gilead, H1568 and Galilee, H1551 all the land H776 of Naphtali, H5321 and carried them captive H1540 to Assyria. Commentary on Isaiah 28 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 28
In this chapter,
This is written for our admonition, and is profitable for reproof and warning to us.
Isa 28:1-8
Here,
Isa 28:9-13
The prophet here complains of the wretched stupidity of this people, that they were unteachable and made no improvement of the means of grace which they possessed; they still continued as they were, their mistakes not rectified, their hearts not renewed, nor their lives reformed. Observe,
Isa 28:14-22
The prophet, having reproved those that made a jest of the word of God, here goes on to reprove those that made a jest of the judgments of God, and set them at defiance; for he is a jealous God, and will not suffer either his ordinances or his providences to be brought into contempt. He addressed himself to the scornful men who ruled in Jerusalem, who were the magistrates of the city, v. 14. It is bad with a people when their thrones of judgment become the seats of the scornful, when rulers are scorners; but that the rulers of Jerusalem should be men of such a character, that they should make light of God's judgments and scorn to take notice of the tokens of his displeasure, is very sad. Who will be mourners in Zion if they are scorners? Observe,
Isa 28:23-29
This parable, which (like many of our Saviour's parables) is borrowed from the husbandman's calling, is ushered in with a solemn preface demanding attention, He that has ears to hear, let him hear, hear and understand, v. 23.
