1 Thus saith H559 the LORD, H3068 Where is the bill H5612 of your mother's H517 divorcement, H3748 whom I have put away? H7971 or which of my creditors H5383 is it to whom I have sold H4376 you? Behold, for your iniquities H5771 have ye sold H4376 yourselves, and for your transgressions H6588 is your mother H517 put away. H7971
When a man H376 hath taken H3947 a wife, H802 and married H1166 her, and it come to pass that she find H4672 no favour H2580 in his eyes, H5869 because he hath found H4672 some H1697 uncleanness H6172 in her: then let him write H3789 her a bill H5612 of divorcement, H3748 and give H5414 it in her hand, H3027 and send H7971 her out of his house. H1004 And when she is departed out H3318 of his house, H1004 she may go H1980 and be another H312 man's H376 wife. And if the latter H314 husband H376 hate H8130 her, and write H3789 her a bill H5612 of divorcement, H3748 and giveth H5414 it in her hand, H3027 and sendeth H7971 her out of his house; H1004 or if the latter H314 husband H376 die, H4191 which took H3947 her to be his wife; H802 Her former H7223 husband, H1167 which sent her away, H7971 may H3201 not take H3947 her again H7725 to be his wife, H802 after H310 that she is defiled; H2930 for that is abomination H8441 before H6440 the LORD: H3068 and thou shalt not cause the land H776 to sin, H2398 which the LORD H3068 thy God H430 giveth H5414 thee for an inheritance. H5159
And G1161 they said, G2036 Moses G3475 suffered G2010 to write G1125 a bill G975 of divorcement, G647 and G2532 to put her away. G630 And G2532 Jesus G2424 answered G611 and said G2036 unto them, G846 For G4314 the hardness G4641 of your G5216 heart G4641 he wrote G1125 you G5213 this G5026 precept. G1785 But G1161 from G575 the beginning G746 of the creation G2937 God G2316 made G4160 them G846 male G730 and G2532 female. G2338 For this cause G1752 G5127 shall G2641 a man G444 leave G2641 his G846 father G3962 and G2532 mother, G3384 and G2532 cleave G4347 to G4314 his G846 wife; G1135 And G2532 they twain G1417 shall be G2071 one G1519 G3391 flesh: G4561 so then G5620 they are G1526 no more G3765 twain, G1417 but G235 one G3391 flesh. G4561 What G3739 therefore G3767 God G2316 hath joined together, G4801 let G5563 not G3361 man G444 put asunder. G5563 And G2532 in G1722 the house G3614 his G846 disciples G3101 asked G1905 him G846 again G3825 of G4012 the same G846 matter. And G2532 he saith G3004 unto them, G846 Whosoever G3739 G1437 shall put away G630 his G846 wife, G1135 and G2532 marry G1060 another, G243 committeth adultery G3429 against G1909 her. G846 And G2532 if G1437 a woman G1135 shall put away G630 her G846 husband, G435 and G2532 be married G1060 to another, G243 she committeth adultery. G3429
Plead H7378 with your mother, H517 plead: H7378 for she is not my wife, H802 neither am I her husband: H376 let her therefore put away H5493 her whoredoms H2183 out of her sight, H6440 and her adulteries H5005 from between her breasts; H7699 Lest I strip H6584 her naked, H6174 and set H3322 her as in the day H3117 that she was born, H3205 and make H7760 her as a wilderness, H4057 and set H7896 her like a dry H6723 land, H776 and slay H4191 her with thirst. H6772 And I will not have mercy H7355 upon her children; H1121 for they be the children H1121 of whoredoms. H2183
Behold, H2005 the LORD'S H3068 hand H3027 is not shortened, H7114 that it cannot save; H3467 neither his ear H241 heavy, H3513 that it cannot hear: H8085 But your iniquities H5771 have separated H914 between H996 you and your God, H430 and your sins H2403 have hid H5641 his face H6440 from you, that he will not hear. Commentary on Isaiah 50 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 50
In this chapter,
Isa 50:1-3
Those who have professed to be the people of God, and yet seem to be dealt severely with, are apt to complain of God, and to lay the fault upon him, as if he had been hard with them. But, in answer to their murmurings, we have here,
Isa 50:4-9
Our Lord Jesus, having proved himself able to save, here shows himself as willing as he is able to save, here shows himself as willing as he is able. We suppose the prophet Isaiah to say something of himself in these verses, engaging and encouraging himself to go on in his work as a prophet, notwithstanding the many hardships he met with, not doubting but that God would stand by him and strengthen him; but, like David, he speaks of himself as a type of Christ, who is here prophesied of and promised to be the Saviour.
Isa 50:10-11
The prophet, having the tongue of the learned given him, that he might give to every one his portion, here makes use of it, rightly dividing the word of truth. It is the summary of the gospel. He that believes shall be saved (he that trusts in the name of the Lord shall be comforted, though for a while he walk in darkness and have no light), but he that believes not shall be damned; though for a while he walk in the light of his own fire, yet he shall lie down in sorrow.
