13 Behold, I am against thee, O inhabitant H3427 of the valley, H6010 and rock H6697 of the plain, H4334 saith H5002 the LORD; H3068 which say, H559 Who shall come down H5181 against us? or who shall enter H935 into our habitations? H4585
The pride H2087 of thine heart H3820 hath deceived H5377 thee, thou that dwellest H7931 in the clefts H2288 of the rock, H5553 whose habitation H3427 is high; H4791 that saith H559 in his heart, H3820 Who shall bring me down H3381 to the ground? H776 Though thou exalt H1361 thyself as the eagle, H5404 and though thou set H7760 thy nest H7064 among the stars, H3556 thence will I bring thee down, H3381 saith H5002 the LORD. H3068
And the king H4428 and his men H582 went H3212 to Jerusalem H3389 unto the Jebusites, H2983 the inhabitants H3427 of the land: H776 which spake H559 unto David, H1732 saying, H559 Except thou take away H5493 the blind H5787 and the lame, H6455 thou shalt not come in H935 hither: thinking, H559 David H1732 cannot come in H935 hither. Nevertheless David H1732 took H3920 the strong hold H4686 of Zion: H6726 the same is the city H5892 of David. H1732
Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, H5030 saith H5002 the LORD, H3068 that steal H1589 my words H1697 every one H376 from his neighbour. H7453 Behold, I am against the prophets, H5030 saith H5002 the LORD, H3068 that use H3947 their tongues, H3956 and say, H5001 He saith. H5002 Behold, I am against them that prophesy H5012 false H8267 dreams, H2472 saith H5002 the LORD, H3068 and do tell H5608 them, and cause my people H5971 to err H8582 by their lies, H8267 and by their lightness; H6350 yet I sent H7971 them not, nor commanded H6680 them: therefore they shall not profit H3276 this people H5971 at all, H3276 saith H5002 the LORD. H3068
Wherefore gloriest H1984 thou in the valleys, H6010 thy flowing H2100 valley, H6010 O backsliding H7728 daughter? H1323 that trusted H982 in her treasures, H214 saying, Who shall come H935 unto me? Behold, I will bring H935 a fear H6343 upon thee, saith H5002 the Lord H136 GOD H3069 of hosts, H6635 from all those that be about H5439 thee; and ye shall be driven out H5080 every man H376 right forth; H6440 and none shall gather up H6908 him that wandereth. Commentary on Jeremiah 21 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 21
It is plain that the prophecies of this book are not placed here in the same order in which they were preached; for there are chapters after this which concern Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, and Jeconiah, who all reigned before Zedekiah, in whose reign the prophecy of this chapter bears date. Here is,
Jer 21:1-7
Here is,
Jer 21:8-14
By the civil message which the king sent to Jeremiah it appeared that both he and the people began to have a respect for him, which it would have been Jeremiah's policy to make some advantage of for himself; but the reply which God obliges him to make is enough to crush the little respect they begin to have for him, and to exasperate them against him more than ever. Not only the predictions in the foregoing verses, but the prescriptions in these, were provoking; for here,
