19 There was G1096 a division G4978 therefore G3767 again G3825 among G1722 the Jews G2453 for G1223 these G5128 sayings. G3056
Think G3543 not G3361 that G3754 I am come G2064 to send G906 peace G1515 on G1909 earth: G1093 I came G2064 not G3756 to send G906 peace, G1515 but G235 a sword. G3162 For G1063 I am come G2064 to set G1369 a man G444 at variance G1369 against G2596 his G846 father, G3962 and G2532 the daughter G2364 against G2596 her G846 mother, G3384 and G2532 the daughter in law G3565 against G2596 her G846 mother in law. G3994
Suppose ye G1380 that G3754 I am come G3854 to give G1325 peace G1515 on G1722 earth? G1093 I tell G3004 you, G5213 Nay; G3780 but G235 rather G2228 division: G1267 For G1063 from G575 henceforth G3568 there shall be G2071 five G4002 in G1722 one G1520 house G3624 divided, G1266 three G5140 against G1909 two, G1417 and G2532 two G1417 against G1909 three. G5140 The father G3962 shall be divided G1266 against G1909 the son, G5207 and G2532 the son G5207 against G1909 the father; G3962 the mother G3384 against G1909 the daughter, G2364 and G2532 the daughter G2364 against G1909 the mother; G3384 the mother in law G3994 against G1909 her G846 daughter in law, G3565 and G2532 the daughter in law G3565 against G1909 her G846 mother in law. G3994
Many G4183 of G1537 the people G3793 therefore, G3767 when they heard G191 this saying, G3056 said, G3004 Of a truth G230 this G3778 is G2076 the Prophet. G4396 Others G243 said, G3004 This G3778 is G2076 the Christ. G5547 But G1161 some G243 said, G3004 G1063 Shall G3361 Christ G5547 come G2064 out of G1537 Galilee? G1056 Hath not G3780 the scripture G1124 said, G2036 That G3754 Christ G5547 cometh G2064 of G1537 the seed G4690 of David, G1138 and G2532 out of G575 the town G2968 of Bethlehem, G965 where G3699 David G1138 was? G2258 So G3767 there was G1096 a division G4978 among G1722 the people G3793 because G1223 of him. G846
And G1161 when he G846 had G2980 so G5124 said, G2980 there arose G1096 a dissension G4714 between the Pharisees G5330 and G2532 the Sadducees: G4523 and G2532 the multitude G4128 was divided. G4977 For G1063 G3303 the Sadducees G4523 say G3004 that there is G1511 no G3361 resurrection, G386 neither G3366 angel, G32 nor G3383 spirit: G4151 but G1161 the Pharisees G5330 confess G3670 both. G297 And G1161 there arose G1096 a great G3173 cry: G2906 and G2532 the scribes G1122 that were of the Pharisees' G5330 part G3313 arose, G450 and strove, G1264 saying, G3004 We find G2147 no G3762 evil G2556 in G1722 this G5129 man: G444 but G1161 if G1487 a spirit G4151 or G2228 an angel G32 hath spoken G2980 to him, G846 let us G2313 not G3361 fight G2313 against God. And G1161 when there arose G1096 a great G4183 dissension, G4714 the chief captain, G5506 fearing G2125 lest G3361 Paul G3972 should have been pulled in pieces G1288 of G5259 them, G846 commanded G2753 the soldiers G4753 to go down, G2597 and to take G726 him G846 by force G726 from G1537 among G3319 them, G846 and G5037 to bring G71 him into G1519 the castle. Commentary on John 10 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 10
In this chapter we have,
Jhn 10:1-18
It is not certain whether this discourse was at the feast of dedication in the winter (spoken of v. 22), which may be taken as the date, not only of what follows, but of what goes before (that which countenances this is, that Christ, in his discourse there, carries on the metaphor of the sheep, v. 26, 27, whence it seems that that discourse and this were at the same time); or whether this was a continuation of his parley with the Pharisees, in the close of the foregoing chapter. The Pharisees supported themselves in their opposition to Christ with this principle, that they were the pastors of the church, and that Jesus, having no commission from them, was an intruder and an impostor, and therefore the people were bound in duty to stick to then, against him. In opposition to this, Christ here describes who were the false shepherds, and who the true, leaving them to infer what they were.
Jhn 10:19-21
We have here an account of the people's different sentiments concerning Christ, on occasion of the foregoing discourse; there was a division, a schism, among them; they differed in their opinions, which threw them into heats and parties. Such a ferment as this they had been in before (ch. 7:43; 9:16); and where there has once been a division again. Rents are sooner made than made up or mended. This division was occasioned by the sayings of Christ, which, one would think, should rather have united them all in him as their centre; but they set them at variance, as Christ foresaw, Lu. 12:51. But it is better that men should be divided about the doctrine of Christ than united in the service of sin, Lu. 11:21. See what the debate was in particular.
Jhn 10:22-38
We have here another rencounter between Christ and the Jews in the temple, in which it is hard to say which is more strange, the gracious words that came out of his mouth or the spiteful ones that came out of theirs.
Jhn 10:39-42
We have here the issue of the conference with the Jews. One would have thought it would have convinced and melted them, but their hearts were hardened. Here we are told,
