55 And G1161 the Jews' G2453 passover G3957 was G2258 nigh at hand: G1451 and G2532 many G4183 went G305 out of G1537 the country G5561 up G1519 to Jerusalem G2414 before G4253 the passover, G3957 to G2443 purify G48 themselves. G1438
For there were many H7227 in the congregation H6951 that were not sanctified: H6942 therefore the Levites H3881 had the charge of the killing H7821 of the passovers H6453 for every one that was not clean, H2889 to sanctify H6942 them unto the LORD. H3068 For a multitude H4768 of the people, H5971 even many H7227 of Ephraim, H669 and Manasseh, H4519 Issachar, H3485 and Zebulun, H2074 had not H3808 cleansed H2891 themselves, yet did they eat H398 the passover H6453 otherwise than it was written. H3789 But Hezekiah H3169 prayed H6419 for them, saying, H559 The good H2896 LORD H3068 pardon H3722 every one That prepareth H3559 his heart H3824 to seek H1875 God, H430 the LORD H3068 God H430 of his fathers, H1 though he be not cleansed according to the purification H2893 of the sanctuary. H6944 And the LORD H3068 hearkened H8085 to Hezekiah, H3169 and healed H7495 the people. H5971
For G1063 if G1487 the blood G129 of bulls G5022 and G2532 of goats, G5131 and G2532 the ashes G4700 of an heifer G1151 sprinkling G4472 the unclean, G2840 sanctifieth G37 to G4314 the purifying G2514 of the flesh: G4561 How much G4214 more G3123 shall G2511 the blood G129 of Christ, G5547 who G3739 through G1223 the eternal G166 Spirit G4151 offered G4374 himself G1438 without spot G299 to God, G2316 purge G2511 your G5216 conscience G4893 from G575 dead G3498 works G2041 to G1519 serve G3000 the living G2198 God? Go G305 ye G5210 up G305 unto G1519 this G5026 feast: G1859 I G1473 go G305 not G3768 up G305 yet G3768 unto G1519 this G5026 feast; G1859 for G3754 my G1699 time G2540 is G4137 not yet G3768 full come. G4137 When G1161 he had said G2036 these words G5023 unto them, G846 he abode G3306 still in G1722 Galilee. G1056 But G1161 when G5613 his G846 brethren G80 were gone up, G305 then G5119 went G305 he G846 also G2532 up G305 unto G1519 the feast, G1859 not G3756 openly, G5320 but G235 as it were G5613 in G1722 secret. G2927
And all the people H5971 gathered themselves together H622 as one H259 man H376 into the street H7339 that was before H6440 the water H4325 gate; H8179 and they spake H559 unto Ezra H5830 the scribe H5608 to bring H935 the book H5612 of the law H8451 of Moses, H4872 which the LORD H3068 had commanded H6680 to Israel. H3478 And Ezra H5830 the priest H3548 brought H935 the law H8451 before H6440 the congregation H6951 both of men H376 and women, H802 and all that could hear H8085 with understanding, H995 upon the first H259 day H3117 of the seventh H7637 month. H2320 And he read H7121 therein before H6440 the street H7339 that was before H6440 the water H4325 gate H8179 from the morning H216 until midday, H4276 H3117 before the men H582 and the women, H802 and those that could understand; H995 and the ears H241 of all the people H5971 were attentive unto the book H5612 of the law. H8451 And Ezra H5830 the scribe H5608 stood H5975 upon a pulpit H4026 of wood, H6086 which they had made H6213 for the purpose; H1697 and beside H681 him stood H5975 Mattithiah, H4993 and Shema, H8087 and Anaiah, H6043 and Urijah, H223 and Hilkiah, H2518 and Maaseiah, H4641 on his right hand; H3225 and on his left hand, H8040 Pedaiah, H6305 and Mishael, H4332 and Malchiah, H4441 and Hashum, H2828 and Hashbadana, H2806 Zechariah, H2148 and Meshullam. H4918 And Ezra H5830 opened H6605 the book H5612 in the sight H5869 of all the people; H5971 (for he was above all the people;) H5971 and when he opened H6605 it, all the people H5971 stood up: H5975 And Ezra H5830 blessed H1288 the LORD, H3068 the great H1419 God. H430 And all the people H5971 answered, H6030 Amen, H543 Amen, H543 with lifting up H4607 their hands: H3027 and they bowed H6915 their heads, and worshipped H7812 the LORD H3068 with their faces H639 to the ground. H776 Also Jeshua, H3442 and Bani, H1137 and Sherebiah, H8274 Jamin, H3226 Akkub, H6126 Shabbethai, H7678 Hodijah, H1941 Maaseiah, H4641 Kelita, H7042 Azariah, H5838 Jozabad, H3107 Hanan, H2605 Pelaiah, H6411 and the Levites, H3881 caused the people H5971 to understand H995 the law: H8451 and the people H5971 stood in their place. H5977 So they read H7121 in the book H5612 in the law H8451 of God H430 distinctly, H6567 and gave H7760 the sense, H7922 and caused them to understand H995 the reading. H4744 And Nehemiah, H5166 which is the Tirshatha, H8660 and Ezra H5830 the priest H3548 the scribe, H5608 and the Levites H3881 that taught H995 the people, H5971 said H559 unto all the people, H5971 This day H3117 is holy H6918 unto the LORD H3068 your God; H430 mourn H56 not, nor weep. H1058 For all the people H5971 wept, H1058 when they heard H8085 the words H1697 of the law. H8451 Then he said H559 unto them, Go your way, H3212 eat H398 the fat, H4924 and drink H8354 the sweet, H4477 and send H7971 portions H4490 unto them for whom nothing is prepared: H3559 for this day H3117 is holy H6918 unto our Lord: H113 neither be ye sorry; H6087 for the joy H2304 of the LORD H3068 is your strength. H4581 So the Levites H3881 stilled H2814 all the people, H5971 saying, H559 Hold your peace, H2013 for the day H3117 is holy; H6918 neither be ye grieved. H6087 And all the people H5971 went their way H3212 to eat, H398 and to drink, H8354 and to send H7971 portions, H4490 and to make H6213 great H1419 mirth, H8057 because they had understood H995 the words H1697 that were declared H3045 unto them.
And when the seventh H7637 month H2320 was come, H5060 and the children H1121 of Israel H3478 were in the cities, H5892 the people H5971 gathered themselves together H622 as one H259 man H376 to Jerusalem. H3389 Then stood up H6965 Jeshua H3442 the son H1121 of Jozadak, H3136 and his brethren H251 the priests, H3548 and Zerubbabel H2216 the son H1121 of Shealtiel, H7597 and his brethren, H251 and builded H1129 the altar H4196 of the God H430 of Israel, H3478 to offer H5927 burnt offerings H5930 thereon, as it is written H3789 in the law H8451 of Moses H4872 the man H376 of God. H430 And they set H3559 the altar H4196 upon his bases; H4350 for fear H367 was upon them because of the people H5971 of those countries: H776 and they offered H5927 burnt offerings H5930 thereon unto the LORD, H3068 even burnt offerings H5930 morning H1242 and evening. H6153 They kept H6213 also the feast H2282 of tabernacles, H5521 as it is written, H3789 and offered the daily H3117 H3117 burnt offerings H5930 by number, H4557 according to the custom, H4941 as the duty H1697 of every day H3117 required; H3117 And afterward H310 offered the continual H8548 burnt offering, H5930 both of the new moons, H2320 and of all the set feasts H4150 of the LORD H3068 that were consecrated, H6942 and of every one that willingly offered H5068 a freewill offering H5071 unto the LORD. H3068 From the first H259 day H3117 of the seventh H7637 month H2320 began H2490 they to offer H5927 burnt offerings H5930 unto the LORD. H3068 But the foundation H3245 of the temple H1964 of the LORD H3068 was not yet laid. H3245
And Moses H4872 went down H3381 from the mount H2022 unto the people, H5971 and sanctified H6942 the people; H5971 and they washed H3526 their clothes. H8071 And he said H559 unto the people, H5971 Be H1961 ready H3559 against the third H7969 day: H3117 come H5066 not at your wives. H802
And thus H3602 shall ye eat H398 it; with your loins H4975 girded, H2296 your shoes H5275 on your feet, H7272 and your staff H4731 in your hand; H3027 and ye shall eat H398 it in haste: H2649 it is the LORD'S H3068 passover. H6453 For I will pass H5674 through the land H776 of Egypt H4714 this night, H3915 and will smite H5221 all the firstborn H1060 in the land H776 of Egypt, H4714 both man H120 and beast; H929 and against all the gods H430 of Egypt H4714 I will execute H6213 judgment: H8201 I am the LORD. H3068 And the blood H1818 shall be to you for a token H226 upon the houses H1004 where ye are: and when I see H7200 the blood, H1818 I will pass H6452 over you, and the plague H5063 shall not be upon you to destroy H4889 you, when I smite H5221 the land H776 of Egypt. H4714 And this day H3117 shall be unto you for a memorial; H2146 and ye shall keep H2287 it a feast H2282 to the LORD H3068 throughout your generations; H1755 ye shall keep it a feast H2287 by an ordinance H2708 for ever. Commentary on John 11 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 11
In this chapter we have the history of that illustrious miracle which Christ wrought a little before his death-the raising of Lazarus to life, which is recorded only by this evangelist; for the other three confine themselves to what Christ did in Galilee, where he resided most, and scarcely ever carried their history into Jerusalem till the passion-week: whereas John's memoirs relate chiefly to what passed at Jerusalem; this passage therefore was reserved for his pen. Some suggest that, when the other evangelists wrote, Lazarus was alive, and it would not well agree either with his safety or with his humility to have it recorded till now, when it is supposed he was dead. It is more largely recorded than any other of Christ's miracles, not only because there are many circumstances of it so very instructive and the miracle of itself so great a proof of Christ's mission, but because it was an earnest of that which was to be the crowning proof of all-Christ's own resurrection. Here is,
Jhn 11:1-16
We have in these verses,
Jhn 11:17-32
The matter being determined, that Christ will go to Judea, and his disciples with him, they address themselves to their journey; in this journey some circumstances happened which the other evangelists record, as the healing of the blind man at Jericho, and the conversion of Zaccheus. We must not reckon ourselves out of our way, while we are in the way of doing good; nor be so intent upon one good office as to neglect another.
At length, he comes near to Bethany, which is said to be about fifteen furlongs from Jerusalem, about two measured miles, v. 18. Notice is taken of this, that this miracle was in effect wrought in Jerusalem, and so was put to her score. Christ's miracles in Galilee were more numerous, but those in or near Jerusalem were more illustrious; there he healed one that had been diseased thirty-eight years, another that had been blind from his birth, and raised one that had been dead four days. To Bethany Christ came, and observe,

Here we have,
Jhn 11:45-57
We have here an account of the consequences of this glorious miracle, which were as usual; to some it was a savour of life unto life, to others of death unto death.
