36 But G1161 I G1473 have G2192 greater G3187 witness G3141 than that of John: G2491 for G1063 the works G2041 which G3739 the Father G3962 hath given G1325 me G3427 to G2443 finish, G5048 G846 the same G846 works G2041 that G3739 I G1473 do, G4160 bear witness G3140 of G4012 me, G1700 that G3754 the Father G3962 hath sent G649 me. G3165
The man G444 answered G611 and G2532 said G2036 unto them, G846 Why G1063 herein G1722 G5129 is G2076 a marvellous thing, G2298 that G3754 ye G5210 know G1492 not G3756 from whence G4159 he is, G2076 and G2532 yet he hath opened G455 mine G3450 eyes. G3788 Now G1161 we know G1492 that G3754 God G2316 heareth G191 not G3756 sinners: G268 but G235 if G1437 any man G5100 be G5600 a worshipper of God, G2318 and G2532 doeth G4160 his G846 will, G2307 him G5127 he heareth. G191 Since G1537 the world began G165 was it G191 not G3756 heard G191 that G3754 any man G5100 opened G455 the eyes G3788 of one that was born G1080 blind. G5185 If G1508 this man G3778 were G2258 not G1508 of G3844 God, G2316 he could G1410 G3756 do G4160 nothing. G3762
If G1487 I do G4160 not G3756 the works G2041 of my G3450 Father, G3962 believe G4100 me G3427 not. G3361 But G1161 if G1487 I do, G4160 though G2579 ye believe G4100 not G3361 me, G1698 believe G4100 the works: G2041 that G2443 ye may know, G1097 and G2532 believe, G4100 that G3754 the Father G3962 is in G1722 me, G1698 and I G2504 in G1722 him. G846
Believest thou G4100 not G3756 that G3754 I G1473 am G2076 in G1722 the Father, G3962 and G2532 the Father G3962 in G1722 me? G1698 the words G4487 that G3739 I G1473 speak G2980 unto you G5213 I speak G2980 not G3756 of G575 myself: G1683 but G1161 the Father G3962 that dwelleth G3306 in G1722 me, G1698 he G846 doeth G4160 the works. G2041 Believe G4100 me G3427 that G3754 I G1473 am in G1722 the Father, G3962 and G2532 the Father G3962 in G1722 me: G1698 or else G1490 believe G4100 me G3427 for G1223 the very G846 works' G2041 sake. G846
And G2532 this G3778 is G2076 the record, G3141 that G3754 God G2316 hath given G1325 to us G2254 eternal G166 life, G2222 and G2532 this G3778 life G2222 is G2076 in G1722 his G846 Son. G5207 He that hath G2192 the Son G5207 hath G2192 life; G2222 and he that hath G2192 not G3361 the Son G5207 of God G2316 hath G2192 not G3756 life. G2222

Commentary on John 5 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 5
We have in the gospels a faithful record of all that Jesus began both to do and to teach, Acts 1:1. These two are interwoven, because what he taught explained what he did, and what he did confirmed what he taught. Accordingly, we have in this chapter a miracle and a sermon.
Jhn 5:1-16
This miraculous cure is not recorded by any other of the evangelists, who confine themselves mostly to the miracles wrought in Galilee, but John relates those wrought at Jerusalem. Concerning this observe,
Now this is all the account we have of this standing miracle; it is uncertain when it began and when it ceased. Some conjecture it began when Eliashib the high priest began the building of the wall about Jerusalem, and sanctified it with prayer; and that God testified his acceptance by putting this virtue into the adjoining pool. Some think it began now lately at Christ's birth; nay, others at his baptism. Dr. Lightfoot, finding in Josephus, Antiq. 15.121-122, mention of a great earthquake in the seventh year of Herod, thirty years before Christ's birth, supposed, since there used to be earthquakes at the descent of angels, that then the angel first descended to stir this water. Some think it ceased with this miracle, others at Christ's death; however, it is certain it had a gracious signification.
Jhn 5:17-30
We have here Christ's discourse upon occasion of his being accused as a sabbath-breaker, and it seems to be his vindication of himself before the sanhedrim, when he was arraigned before them: whether on the same day, or two or three days after, does not appear; probably the same day. Observe,
Jhn 5:31-47
In these verses our Lord Jesus proves and confirms the commission he had produced, and makes it out that he was sent of God to be the Messiah.
