26 I have G2192 many things G4183 to say G2980 and G2532 to judge G2919 of G4012 you: G5216 but G235 he that sent G3992 me G3165 is G2076 true; G227 and I G2504 speak G3004 to G1519 the world G2889 those things G5023 which G3739 I have heard G191 of G3844 him. G846
But G235 I know G1097 you, G5209 that G3754 ye have G2192 not G3756 the love G26 of God G2316 in G1722 you. G1438 I am G1473 come G2064 in G1722 my G3450 Father's G3962 name, G3686 and G2532 ye receive G2983 me G3165 not: G3756 if G1437 another G243 shall come G2064 in G1722 his own G2398 name, G3686 him G1565 ye will receive. G2983
And G2532 what G3739 he hath seen G3708 and G2532 heard, G191 that G5124 he testifieth; G3140 and G2532 no man G3762 receiveth G2983 his G846 testimony. G3141 He that hath received G2983 his G846 testimony G3141 hath set to his seal G4972 that G3754 God G2316 is G2076 true. G227
And G1161 yet G2532 if G1437 I G1473 judge, G2919 my G1699 judgment G2920 is G2076 true: G227 for G3754 I am G1510 not G3756 alone, G3441 but G235 I G1473 and G2532 the Father G3962 that sent G3992 me. G3165 G2532 It is G1125 also G1161 written G1125 in G1722 your G5212 law, G3551 that G3754 the testimony G3141 of two G1417 men G444 is G2076 true. G227
And G2532 Jesus G2424 said, G2036 For G1519 judgment G2917 I G1473 am come G2064 into G1519 this G5126 world, G2889 that G2443 they which see G991 not G3361 might see; G991 and G2532 that they which see G991 might be made G1096 blind. G5185 And G2532 some of G1537 the Pharisees G5330 which G3588 were G5607 with G3326 him G846 heard G191 these words, G5023 and G2532 said G2036 unto him, G846 Are G3361 G2070 we G2249 blind G5185 also? G2532 Jesus G2424 said G2036 unto them, G846 If G1487 ye were G2258 blind, G5185 ye should G302 have G2192 no G3756 sin: G266 but G1161 now G3568 ye say, G3004 G3754 We see; G991 therefore G3767 your G5216 sin G266 remaineth. G3306
And G2532 if G3362 any man G5100 hear G191 my G3450 words, G4487 and G2532 believe G4100 not, G3362 I G1473 judge G2919 him G846 not: G3756 for G1063 I came G2064 not G3756 to G2443 judge G2919 the world, G2889 but G235 to G2443 save G4982 the world. G2889 He that rejecteth G114 me, G1691 and G2532 receiveth G2983 not G3361 my G3450 words, G4487 hath G2192 one that judgeth G2919 him: G846 the word G3056 that G3739 I have spoken, G2980 the same G1565 shall judge G2919 him G846 in G1722 the last G2078 day. G2250 For G3754 I G1473 have G2980 not G3756 spoken G2980 of G1537 myself; G1683 but G235 the Father G3962 which sent G3992 me, G3165 he G846 gave G1325 me G3427 a commandment, G1785 what G5101 I should say, G2036 and G2532 what G5101 I should speak. G2980 And G2532 I know G1492 that G3754 his G846 commandment G1785 is G2076 life G2222 everlasting: G166 whatsoever G3739 I G1473 speak G2980 therefore, G3767 even as G2531 the Father G3962 said G2046 unto me, G3427 so G3779 I speak. G2980
Of G4012 whom G3739 we G2254 have G3056 many things G4183 to say, G3056 and G2532 hard G1421 to be uttered, G3004 seeing G1893 ye are G1096 dull G3576 of hearing. G189 For G2532 G1063 when for G1223 the time G5550 ye ought G3784 to be G1511 teachers, G1320 ye have G2192 need G5532 that one teach G1321 you G5209 again G3825 which G5101 be the first G746 principles G4747 of the oracles G3051 of God; G2316 and G2532 are become such as G1096 have G2192 need G5532 of milk, G1051 and G2532 not G3756 of strong G4731 meat. Commentary on John 8 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 8
In this chapter we have,
Jhn 8:1-11
Though Christ was basely abused in the foregoing chapter, both by the rulers and by the people, yet here we have him still at Jerusalem, still in the temple. How often would he have gathered them! Observe,
Jhn 8:12-20
The rest of the chapter is taken up with debates between Christ and contradicting sinners, who cavilled at the most gracious words that proceeded out of his mouth. It is not certain whether these disputes were the same day that the adulteress was discharged; it is probable they were, for the evangelist mentions no other day, and takes notice (v. 2) how early Christ began that day's work. Though those Pharisees that accused the woman had absconded, yet there were other Pharisees (v. 13) to confront Christ, who had brass enough in their foreheads to keep them in countenance, though some of their party were put to such a shameful retreat; nay perhaps that made them the more industrious to pick quarrels with him, to retrieve, if possible, the reputation of their baffled party. In these verses we have,
This was the sum of the first conference between Christ and these carnal Jews, in the conclusion of which we are told how their tongues were let loose, and their hands tied.
Jhn 8:21-30
Christ here gives fair warning to the careless unbelieving Jews to consider what would be the consequence of their infidelity, that they might prevent it before it was too late; for he spoke words of terror as well as words of grace. Observe here,
Jhn 8:31-37
We have in these verses,
Jhn 8:38-47
Here Christ and the Jews are still at issue; he sets himself to convince and convert them, while they still set themselves to contradict and oppose him.
This is a high charge, and sounds very harsh and horrid, that any of the children of men, especially the church's children, should be called children of the devil, and therefore our Saviour fully proves it.
Jhn 8:48-50
Here is,
Jhn 8:51-59
In these verses we have,
