40 But G1161 now G3568 ye seek G2212 to kill G615 me, G3165 a man G444 that G3739 hath told G2980 you G5213 the truth, G225 which G3739 I have heard G191 of G3844 God: G2316 this G5124 did G4160 not G3756 Abraham. G11
Therefore G1223 G5124 rejoice, G2165 ye heavens, G3772 and G2532 ye that dwell G4637 in G1722 them. G846 Woe G3759 to the inhabiters G2730 of the earth G1093 and G2532 of the sea! G2281 for G3754 the devil G1228 is come down G2597 unto G4314 you, G5209 having G2192 great G3173 wrath, G2372 because he knoweth G1492 that G3754 he hath G2192 but a short G3641 time. G2540 And G2532 when G3753 the dragon G1404 saw G1492 that G3754 he was cast G906 unto G1519 the earth, G1093 he persecuted G1377 the woman G1135 which G3748 brought forth G5088 the man G730 child.
I know G1492 that G3754 ye are G2075 Abraham's G11 seed; G4690 but G235 ye seek G2212 to kill G615 me, G3165 because G3754 my G1699 word G3056 hath G5562 no G3756 place G5562 in G1722 you. G5213 I G1473 speak G2980 that which G3739 I have seen G3708 with G3844 my G3450 Father: G3962 and G2532 ye G5210 do G4160 that G3767 which G3739 ye have seen G3708 with G3844 your G5216 father. G3962
Not G3756 as G2531 Cain, G2535 who was G2258 of G1537 that wicked one, G4190 and G2532 slew G4969 his G846 brother. G80 And G2532 wherefore G5484 G5101 slew G4969 he him? G846 Because G3754 his own G846 works G2041 were G2258 evil, G4190 and G1161 his G846 brother's G80 righteous. G1342 Marvel G2296 not, G3361 my G3450 brethren, G80 if G1487 the world G2889 hate G3404 you. G5209 We know G1492 that G3754 we G2249 have passed G3327 from G1537 death G2288 unto G1519 life, G2222 because G3754 we love G25 the brethren. G80 He that loveth G25 not G3361 his brother G80 abideth G3306 in G1722 death. G2288 Whosoever G3956 hateth G3404 his G846 brother G80 is G2076 a murderer: G443 and G2532 ye know G1492 that G3754 no G3756 G3956 murderer G443 hath G2192 eternal G166 life G2222 abiding G3306 in G1722 him. Commentary on John 8 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 8
In this chapter we have,
Jhn 8:1-11
Though Christ was basely abused in the foregoing chapter, both by the rulers and by the people, yet here we have him still at Jerusalem, still in the temple. How often would he have gathered them! Observe,
Jhn 8:12-20
The rest of the chapter is taken up with debates between Christ and contradicting sinners, who cavilled at the most gracious words that proceeded out of his mouth. It is not certain whether these disputes were the same day that the adulteress was discharged; it is probable they were, for the evangelist mentions no other day, and takes notice (v. 2) how early Christ began that day's work. Though those Pharisees that accused the woman had absconded, yet there were other Pharisees (v. 13) to confront Christ, who had brass enough in their foreheads to keep them in countenance, though some of their party were put to such a shameful retreat; nay perhaps that made them the more industrious to pick quarrels with him, to retrieve, if possible, the reputation of their baffled party. In these verses we have,
This was the sum of the first conference between Christ and these carnal Jews, in the conclusion of which we are told how their tongues were let loose, and their hands tied.
Jhn 8:21-30
Christ here gives fair warning to the careless unbelieving Jews to consider what would be the consequence of their infidelity, that they might prevent it before it was too late; for he spoke words of terror as well as words of grace. Observe here,
Jhn 8:31-37
We have in these verses,
Jhn 8:38-47
Here Christ and the Jews are still at issue; he sets himself to convince and convert them, while they still set themselves to contradict and oppose him.
This is a high charge, and sounds very harsh and horrid, that any of the children of men, especially the church's children, should be called children of the devil, and therefore our Saviour fully proves it.
Jhn 8:48-50
Here is,
Jhn 8:51-59
In these verses we have,
