24 Then G3767 again G1208 G1537 called they G5455 the man G444 that G3739 was G2258 blind, G5185 and G2532 said G2036 unto him, G846 Give G1325 God G2316 the praise: G1391 we G2249 know G1492 that G3754 this G3778 man G444 is G2076 a sinner. G268
Therefore G3767 said G3004 some G5100 of G1537 the Pharisees, G5330 This G3778 man G444 is G2076 not G3756 of G3844 God, G2316 because G3754 he keepeth G5083 not G3756 the sabbath day. G4521 Others G243 said, G3004 How G4459 can G1410 a man G444 that is a sinner G268 do G4160 such G5108 miracles? G4592 And G2532 there was G2258 a division G4978 among G1722 them. G846
For G1063 he hath made G4160 him to be sin G266 for G5228 us, G2257 who G3588 knew G1097 no G3361 sin; G266 that G2443 we G2249 might be made G1096 the righteousness G1343 of God G2316 in G1722 him. G846
For G1063 I bear G3140 them G846 record G3140 that G3754 they have G2192 a zeal G2205 of God, G2316 but G235 not G3756 according G2596 to knowledge. G1922 For G1063 they being ignorant G50 of God's G2316 righteousness, G1343 and G2532 going about G2212 to establish G2476 their own G2398 righteousness, G1343 have G5293 not G3756 submitted themselves G5293 unto the righteousness G1343 of God. G2316 For G1063 Christ G5547 is the end G5056 of the law G3551 for G1519 righteousness G1343 to every one G3956 that believeth. G4100
For G1063 what the law G3551 could not do, G102 in G1722 that G3739 it was weak G770 through G1223 the flesh, G4561 God G2316 sending G3992 his own G1438 Son G5207 in G1722 the likeness G3667 of sinful G266 flesh, G4561 and G2532 for G4012 sin, G266 condemned G2632 sin G266 in G1722 the flesh: G4561
When G3753 the chief priests G749 therefore G3767 and G2532 officers G5257 saw G1492 him, G846 they cried out, G2905 saying, G3004 Crucify G4717 him, crucify G4717 him. Pilate G4091 saith G3004 unto them, G846 Take G2983 ye G5210 him, G846 and G2532 crucify G4717 him: for G1063 I G1473 find G2147 no G3756 fault G156 in G1722 him. G846
Hereafter G3765 I will G2980 not G3765 talk G2980 much G4183 with G3326 you: G5216 for G1063 the prince G758 of this G5127 world G2889 cometh, G2064 and G2532 hath G2192 G3756 nothing G3762 in G1722 me. G1698
Wherefore ye shall make H6213 images H6754 of your emerods, H2914 H6076 and images H6754 of your mice H5909 that mar H7843 the land; H776 and ye shall give H5414 glory H3519 unto the God H430 of Israel: H3478 peradventure he will lighten H7043 his hand H3027 from off you, and from off your gods, H430 and from off your land. H776 Wherefore then do ye harden H3513 your hearts, H3824 as the Egyptians H4714 and Pharaoh H6547 hardened H3513 their hearts? H3820 when he had wrought wonderfully H5953 among them, did they not let the people go, H7971 and they departed? H3212 Now therefore make H6213 a H259 new H2319 cart, H5699 and take H3947 two H8147 milch H5763 kine, H6510 on which there hath come H5927 no yoke, H5923 and tie H631 the kine H6510 to the cart, H5699 and bring H7725 their calves H1121 home H1004 from them: H310 And take H3947 the ark H727 of the LORD, H3068 and lay H5414 it upon the cart; H5699 and put H7760 the jewels H3627 of gold, H2091 which ye return H7725 him for a trespass offering, H817 in a coffer H712 by the side H6654 thereof; and send it away, H7971 that it may go. H1980 And see, H7200 if it goeth up H5927 by the way H1870 of his own coast H1366 to Bethshemesh, H1053 then he hath done H6213 us this great H1419 evil: H7451 but if not, then we shall know H3045 that it is not his hand H3027 that smote H5060 us: it was a chance H4745 that happened to us. H1961
That G2443 all G3956 men should honour G5091 the Son, G5207 even as G2531 they honour G5091 the Father. G3962 He that honoureth G5091 not G3361 the Son G5207 honoureth G5091 not G3756 the Father G3962 which G3588 hath sent G3992 him. G846
Now G1161 when the Pharisee G5330 which G3588 had bidden G2564 him G846 saw G1492 it, he spake G2036 within G1722 himself, G1438 saying, G3004 This man, G3778 if G1487 he were G2258 a prophet, G4396 G302 would have known G1097 who G5101 and G2532 what manner G4217 of woman G1135 this is that G3748 toucheth G680 him: G846 for G3754 she is G2076 a sinner. G268
And G2532 with G4862 him G846 they crucify G4717 two G1417 thieves; G3027 the one G1520 on G1537 his right hand, G1188 and G2532 the other G1520 on G1537 his G846 left. G2176
Hear H8085 the word H1697 of the LORD, H3068 ye that tremble H2730 at his word; H1697 Your brethren H251 that hated H8130 you, that cast you out H5077 for my name's H8034 sake, said, H559 Let the LORD H3068 be glorified: H3513 but he shall appear H7200 to your joy, H8057 and they shall be ashamed. Commentary on John 9 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 9
After Christ's departure out of the temple, in the close of the foregoing chapter, and before this happened which is recorded in this chapter, he had been for some time abroad in the country, it is supposed about two or three months; in which interval of time Dr. Lightfoot and other harmonists place all the passages that occur from Lu. 10:17 to 13:17. What is recorded in ch. 7 and 8 was at the feast of tabernacles, in September; what is recorded in this and the following chapter was at the feast of dedication in December, ch. 10:22. Mr. Clark and others place this immediately after the foregoing chapter. In this chapter we have,
Jhn 9:1-7
We have here sight given to a poor beggar that had been blind from his birth. Observe,
Now,
Jhn 9:8-12
Such a wonderful event as the giving of sight to a man born blind could not but be the talk of the town, and many heeded it no more than they do other town-talk, that is but nine days' wonder; but here we are told what the neighbours said of it, for the confirmation of the matter of fact. That which at first was not believed without scrutiny may afterwards be admitted without scruple. Two things are debated in this conference about it:-
Jhn 9:13-34
One would have expected that such a miracle as Christ wrought upon the blind man would have settled his reputation, and silenced and shamed all opposition, but it had the contrary effect; instead of being embraced as a prophet for it, he is prosecuted as a criminal.
Jhn 9:35-38
In these verses we may observe,
Jhn 9:39-41
Christ, having spoken comfort to the poor man that was persecuted, here speaks conviction to his persecutors, a specimen of the distributions of trouble and rest at the great day, 2 Th. 1:6, 7. Probably this was not immediately after his discourse with the man, but he took the next opportunity that offered itself to address the Pharisees. Here is,
