5 Then the mariners H4419 were afraid, H3372 and cried H2199 every man H376 unto his god, H430 and cast forth H2904 the wares H3627 that were in the ship H591 into the sea, H3220 to lighten H7043 it of them. But Jonah H3124 was gone down H3381 into the sides H3411 of the ship; H5600 and he lay, H7901 and was fast asleep. H7290
And G1161 we G2257 being exceedingly G4971 tossed with a tempest, G5492 the next G1836 day they lightened the ship; G1546 G4160 And G2532 the third G5154 day we cast out G4496 with our own hands G849 the tackling G4631 of the ship. G4143
And G1161 when they had eaten G5160 enough, G2880 they lightened G2893 the ship, G4143 and cast out G1544 the wheat G4621 into G1519 the sea. G2281
And they took H3947 the bullock H6499 which was given H5414 them, and they dressed H6213 it, and called H7121 on the name H8034 of Baal H1168 from morning H1242 even until noon, H6672 saying, H559 O Baal, H1168 hear H6030 us. But there was no H369 voice, H6963 nor any that answered. H6030 And they leaped H6452 upon the altar H4196 which was made. H6213
Then the men H582 feared H3372 the LORD H3068 exceedingly, H1419 H3374 and offered H2076 a sacrifice H2077 unto the LORD, H3068 and made H5087 vows. H5088
But G235 what things G3748 were G2258 gain G2771 to me, G3427 those G5023 I counted G2233 loss G2209 for G1223 Christ. G5547 Yea G235 doubtless, G3304 and G2532 I count G2233 all things G3956 but loss G2209 for G1511 G1223 the excellency G5242 of the knowledge G1108 of Christ G5547 Jesus G2424 my G3450 Lord: G2962 for G1223 whom G3739 I have suffered the loss G2210 of all things, G3956 and G2532 do count G2233 them G1511 but dung, G4657 that G2443 I may win G2770 Christ, G5547
And G2532 when he rose up G450 from G575 prayer, G4335 and was come G2064 to G4314 his G846 disciples, G3101 he found G2147 them G846 sleeping G2837 for G575 sorrow, G3077 And G2532 said G2036 unto them, G846 Why G5101 sleep ye? G2518 rise G450 and pray, G4336 lest G3363 ye enter G1525 into G1519 temptation. G3986
Then G5119 cometh he G2064 to G4314 his G846 disciples, G3101 and G2532 saith G3004 unto them, G846 Sleep on G2518 now, G3063 and G2532 take your rest: G373 behold, G2400 the hour G5610 is at hand, G1448 and G2532 the Son G5207 of man G444 is betrayed G3860 into G1519 the hands G5495 of sinners. G268
And G2532 he came G2064 and found G2147 them G846 asleep G2518 again: G3825 for G1063 their G846 eyes G3788 were G2258 heavy. G916
And G2532 he cometh G2064 unto G4314 the disciples, G3101 and G2532 findeth G2147 them G846 asleep, G2518 and G2532 saith G3004 unto Peter, G4074 What, G3779 could ye G2480 not G3756 watch G1127 with G3326 me G1700 one G3391 hour? G5610 Watch G1127 and G2532 pray, G4336 that G3363 ye enter G1525 not G3363 into G1519 temptation: G3986 the spirit G4151 indeed G3303 is willing, G4289 but G1161 the flesh G4561 is weak. G772
While G1161 the bridegroom G3566 tarried, G5549 they all G3956 slumbered G3573 and G2532 slept. G2518
And she made him sleep H3462 upon her knees; H1290 and she called H7121 for a man, H376 and she caused him to shave off H1548 the seven H7651 locks H4253 of his head; H7218 and she began H2490 to afflict H6031 him, and his strength H3581 went H5493 from him.
Wherefore they cried H7121 unto the LORD, H3068 and said, H559 We beseech thee, H577 O LORD, H3068 we beseech thee, let us not perish H6 for this man's H376 life, H5315 and lay H5414 not upon us innocent H5355 H5355 blood: H1818 for thou, O LORD, H3068 hast done H6213 as it pleased H2654 thee.
So the shipmaster H7227 H2259 came H7126 to him, and said H559 unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? H7290 arise, H6965 call H7121 upon thy God, H430 if so be that God H430 will think H6245 upon us, that we perish H6 not.
Assemble H6908 yourselves and come; H935 draw near H5066 together, H3162 ye that are escaped H6412 of the nations: H1471 they have no knowledge H3045 that set up H5375 the wood H6086 of their graven image, H6459 and pray H6419 unto a god H410 that cannot save. H3467
And the residue H7611 thereof he maketh H6213 a god, H410 even his graven image: H6459 he falleth down H5456 unto it, and worshippeth H7812 it, and prayeth H6419 unto it, and saith, H559 Deliver H5337 me; for thou art my god. H410 They have not known H3045 nor understood: H995 for he hath shut H2902 their eyes, H5869 that they cannot see; H7200 and their hearts, H3826 that they cannot understand. H7919 And none considereth H7725 in his heart, H3820 neither is there knowledge H1847 nor understanding H8394 to say, H559 I have burned H8313 part H2677 of it in H1119 the fire; H784 yea, also I have baked H644 bread H3899 upon the coals H1513 thereof; I have roasted H6740 flesh, H1320 and eaten H398 it: and shall I make H6213 the residue H3499 thereof an abomination? H8441 shall I fall down H5456 to the stock H944 of a tree? H6086 He feedeth H7462 on ashes: H665 a deceived H2048 heart H3820 hath turned him aside, H5186 that he cannot deliver H5337 his soul, H5315 nor say, H559 Is there not a lie H8267 in my right hand? Commentary on Jonah 1 Matthew Henry Commentary
An Exposition, With Practical Observations, of
The Book of Jonah
Chapter 1
In this chapter we have,
Jon 1:1-3
Observe,
Jon 1:4-10
When Jonah was set on ship-board, and under sail for Tarshish, he thought himself safe enough; but here we find him pursued and overtaken, discovered and convicted as a deserter from God, as one that had run his colours.
Jon 1:11-17
It is plain that Jonah is the man for whose sake this evil is upon them, but the discovery of him to be so was not sufficient to answer the demands of this tempest; they had found him out, but something more was to be done, for still the sea wrought and was tempestuous (v. 11), and again (v. 13), it grew more and more tempestuous (so the margin reads it); for if we discover sin to be the cause of our troubles, and do not forsake it, we do but make bad worse. Therefore they went on with the prosecution.
