6 So the shipmaster H7227 H2259 came H7126 to him, and said H559 unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? H7290 arise, H6965 call H7121 upon thy God, H430 if so be that God H430 will think H6245 upon us, that we perish H6 not.
And G2532 there arose G1096 a great G3173 storm G2978 of wind, G417 and G1161 the waves G2949 beat G1911 into G1519 the ship, G4143 so that G5620 it G846 was G1072 now G2235 full. G1072 And G2532 he G846 was G2258 in G1909 the hinder part of the ship, G4403 asleep G2518 on G1909 a pillow: G4344 and G2532 they awake G1326 him, G846 and G2532 say G3004 unto him, G846 Master, G1320 carest G3199 thou G4671 not G3756 that G3754 we perish? G622 And G2532 he arose, G1326 and rebuked G2008 the wind, G417 and G2532 said G2036 unto the sea, G2281 Peace, G4623 be still. G5392 And G2532 the wind G417 ceased, G2869 and G2532 there was G1096 a great G3173 calm. G1055 And G2532 he said G2036 unto them, G846 Why G5101 are ye G2075 so G3779 fearful? G1169 how is it G4459 that ye have G2192 no G3756 faith? G4102 And G2532 they feared G5399 exceedingly, G5401 G3173 and G2532 said G3004 one G240 to G4314 another, G240 What G5101 manner of man G686 is G2076 this, G3778 that G3754 even G2532 the wind G417 and G2532 the sea G2281 obey G5219 him? G846
Saying H559 to a stock, H6086 Thou art my father; H1 and to a stone, H68 Thou hast brought me forth: H3205 for they have turned H6437 their back H6203 unto me, and not their face: H6440 but in the time H6256 of their trouble H7451 they will say, H559 Arise, H6965 and save H3467 us. But where are thy gods H430 that thou hast made H6213 thee? let them arise, H6965 if they can save H3467 thee in the time H6256 of thy trouble: H7451 for according to the number H4557 of thy cities H5892 are thy gods, H430 O Judah. H3063
Their soul H5315 abhorreth H8581 all manner of meat; H400 and they draw near H5060 unto the gates H8179 of death. H4194 Then they cry H2199 unto the LORD H3068 in their trouble, H6862 and he saveth H3467 them out of their distresses. H4691 He sent H7971 his word, H1697 and healed H7495 them, and delivered H4422 them from their destructions. H7825

Commentary on Jonah 1 Matthew Henry Commentary
An Exposition, With Practical Observations, of
The Book of Jonah
Chapter 1
In this chapter we have,
Jon 1:1-3
Observe,
Jon 1:4-10
When Jonah was set on ship-board, and under sail for Tarshish, he thought himself safe enough; but here we find him pursued and overtaken, discovered and convicted as a deserter from God, as one that had run his colours.
Jon 1:11-17
It is plain that Jonah is the man for whose sake this evil is upon them, but the discovery of him to be so was not sufficient to answer the demands of this tempest; they had found him out, but something more was to be done, for still the sea wrought and was tempestuous (v. 11), and again (v. 13), it grew more and more tempestuous (so the margin reads it); for if we discover sin to be the cause of our troubles, and do not forsake it, we do but make bad worse. Therefore they went on with the prosecution.
