Isaiah 23:1-18 STRONG

The burden H4853 of Tyre. H6865 Howl, H3213 ye ships H591 of Tarshish; H8659 for it is laid waste, H7703 so that there is no house, H1004 no entering in: H935 from the land H776 of Chittim H3794 it is revealed H1540 to them. Be still, H1826 ye inhabitants H3427 of the isle; H339 thou whom the merchants H5503 of Zidon, H6721 that pass over H5674 the sea, H3220 have replenished. H4390 And by great H7227 waters H4325 the seed H2233 of Sihor, H7883 the harvest H7105 of the river, H2975 is her revenue; H8393 and she is a mart H5505 of nations. H1471 Be thou ashamed, H954 O Zidon: H6721 for the sea H3220 hath spoken, H559 even the strength H4581 of the sea, H3220 saying, H559 I travail H2342 not, nor bring forth children, H3205 neither do I nourish up H1431 young men, H970 nor bring up H7311 virgins. H1330 As at the report H8088 concerning Egypt, H4714 so shall they be sorely pained H2342 at the report H8088 of Tyre. H6865 Pass ye over H5674 to Tarshish; H8659 howl, H3213 ye inhabitants H3427 of the isle. H339 Is this your joyous H5947 city, whose antiquity H6927 is of ancient H6924 days? H3117 her own feet H7272 shall carry H2986 her afar off H7350 to sojourn. H1481 Who hath taken this counsel H3289 against Tyre, H6865 the crowning H5849 city, whose merchants H5503 are princes, H8269 whose traffickers H3667 are the honourable H3513 of the earth? H776 The LORD H3068 of hosts H6635 hath purposed H3289 it, to stain H2490 the pride H1347 of all glory, H6643 and to bring into contempt H7043 all the honourable H3513 of the earth. H776 Pass H5674 through thy land H776 as a river, H2975 O daughter H1323 of Tarshish: H8659 there is no more strength. H4206 He stretched out H5186 his hand H3027 over the sea, H3220 he shook H7264 the kingdoms: H4467 the LORD H3068 hath given a commandment H6680 against the merchant H3667 city, to destroy H8045 the strong H4581 holds H4581 thereof. And he said, H559 Thou shalt no more H3254 rejoice, H5937 O thou oppressed H6231 virgin, H1330 daughter H1323 of Zidon: H6721 arise, H6965 pass over H5674 to Chittim; H3794 there also shalt thou have no rest. H5117 Behold the land H776 of the Chaldeans; H3778 this people H5971 was not, till the Assyrian H804 founded H3245 it for them that dwell in the wilderness: H6728 they set up H6965 the towers H971 thereof, they raised up H6209 the palaces H759 thereof; and he brought H7760 it to ruin. H4654 Howl, H3213 ye ships H591 of Tarshish: H8659 for your strength H4581 is laid waste. H7703 And it shall come to pass in that day, H3117 that Tyre H6865 shall be forgotten H7911 seventy H7657 years, H8141 according to the days H3117 of one H259 king: H4428 after the end H7093 of seventy H7657 years H8141 shall Tyre H6865 sing H7892 as an harlot. H2181 Take H3947 an harp, H3658 go about H5437 the city, H5892 thou harlot H2181 that hast been forgotten; H7911 make sweet H3190 melody, H5059 sing many H7235 songs, H7892 that thou mayest be remembered. H2142 And it shall come to pass after the end H7093 of seventy H7657 years, H8141 that the LORD H3068 will visit H6485 Tyre, H6865 and she shall turn H7725 to her hire, H868 and shall commit fornication H2181 with all the kingdoms H4467 of the world H776 upon the face H6440 of the earth. H127 And her merchandise H5504 and her hire H868 shall be holiness H6944 to the LORD: H3068 it shall not be treasured H686 nor laid up; H2630 for her merchandise H5504 shall be for them that dwell H3427 before H6440 the LORD, H3068 to eat H398 sufficiently, H7654 and for durable H6266 clothing. Ezekiel 26:1-21 STRONG

And it came to pass in the eleventh H6249 H6240 year, H8141 in the first H259 day of the month, H2320 that the word H1697 of the LORD H3068 came unto me, saying, H559 Son H1121 of man, H120 because that Tyrus H6865 hath said H559 against Jerusalem, H3389 Aha, H1889 she is broken H7665 that was the gates H1817 of the people: H5971 she is turned H5437 unto me: I shall be replenished, H4390 now she is laid waste: H2717 Therefore thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD; H3069 Behold, I am against thee, O Tyrus, H6865 and will cause many H7227 nations H1471 to come up H5927 against thee, as the sea H3220 causeth his waves H1530 to come up. H5927 And they shall destroy H7843 the walls H2346 of Tyrus, H6865 and break down H2040 her towers: H4026 I will also scrape H5500 her dust H6083 from her, and make H5414 her like the top H6706 of a rock. H5553 It shall be a place for the spreading H4894 of nets H2764 in the midst H8432 of the sea: H3220 for I have spoken H1696 it, saith H5002 the Lord H136 GOD: H3069 and it shall become a spoil H957 to the nations. H1471 And her daughters H1323 which are in the field H7704 shall be slain H2026 by the sword; H2719 and they shall know H3045 that I am the LORD. H3068 For thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD; H3069 Behold, I will bring H935 upon Tyrus H6865 Nebuchadrezzar H5019 king H4428 of Babylon, H894 a king H4428 of kings, H4428 from the north, H6828 with horses, H5483 and with chariots, H7393 and with horsemen, H6571 and companies, H6951 and much H7227 people. H5971 He shall slay H2026 with the sword H2719 thy daughters H1323 in the field: H7704 and he shall make H5414 a fort H1785 against thee, and cast H8210 a mount H5550 against thee, and lift up H6965 the buckler H6793 against thee. And he shall set H5414 engines H4239 of war H6904 against thy walls, H2346 and with his axes H2719 he shall break down H5422 thy towers. H4026 By reason of the abundance H8229 of his horses H5483 their dust H80 shall cover H3680 thee: thy walls H2346 shall shake H7493 at the noise H6963 of the horsemen, H6571 and of the wheels, H1534 and of the chariots, H7393 when he shall enter H935 into thy gates, H8179 as men enter H3996 into a city H5892 wherein is made a breach. H1234 With the hoofs H6541 of his horses H5483 shall he tread down H7429 all thy streets: H2351 he shall slay H2026 thy people H5971 by the sword, H2719 and thy strong H5797 garrisons H4676 shall go down H3381 to the ground. H776 And they shall make a spoil H7997 of thy riches, H2428 and make a prey H962 of thy merchandise: H7404 and they shall break down H2040 thy walls, H2346 and destroy H5422 thy pleasant H2532 houses: H1004 and they shall lay H7760 thy stones H68 and thy timber H6086 and thy dust H6083 in the midst H8432 of the water. H4325 And I will cause the noise H1995 of thy songs H7892 to cease; H7673 and the sound H6963 of thy harps H3658 shall be no more heard. H8085 And I will make H5414 thee like the top H6706 of a rock: H5553 thou shalt be a place to spread H4894 nets H2764 upon; H4894 thou shalt be built H1129 no more: for I the LORD H3068 have spoken H1696 it, saith H5002 the Lord H136 GOD. H3069 Thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD H3069 to Tyrus; H6865 Shall not the isles H339 shake H7493 at the sound H6963 of thy fall, H4658 when the wounded H2491 cry, H602 when the slaughter H2027 is made H2026 in the midst H8432 of thee? Then all the princes H5387 of the sea H3220 shall come down H3381 from their thrones, H3678 and lay away H5493 their robes, H4598 and put off H6584 their broidered H7553 garments: H899 they shall clothe H3847 themselves with trembling; H2731 they shall sit H3427 upon the ground, H776 and shall tremble H2729 at every moment, H7281 and be astonished H8074 at thee. And they shall take up H5375 a lamentation H7015 for thee, and say H559 to thee, How art thou destroyed, H6 that wast inhabited H3427 of seafaring men, H3220 the renowned H1984 city, H5892 which wast strong H2389 in the sea, H3220 she and her inhabitants, H3427 which cause H5414 their terror H2851 to be on all that haunt H3427 it! Now shall the isles H339 tremble H2729 in the day H3117 of thy fall; H4658 yea, the isles H339 that are in the sea H3220 shall be troubled H926 at thy departure. H3318 For thus saith H559 the Lord H136 GOD; H3069 When I shall make H5414 thee a desolate H2717 city, H5892 like the cities H5892 that are not inhabited; H3427 when I shall bring up H5927 the deep H8415 upon thee, and great H7227 waters H4325 shall cover H3680 thee; When I shall bring thee down H3381 with them that descend H3381 into the pit, H953 with the people H5971 of old time, H5769 and shall set H3427 thee in the low parts H8482 of the earth, H776 in places desolate H2723 of old, H5769 with them that go down H3381 to the pit, H953 that thou be not inhabited; H3427 and I shall set H5414 glory H6643 in the land H776 of the living; H2416 I will make H5414 thee a terror, H1091 and thou shalt be no more: though thou be sought for, H1245 yet shalt thou never H5769 be found H4672 again, saith H5002 the Lord H136 GOD. Commentary on Joshua 19 Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible

CHAPTER 19

Jos 19:1-9. The Lot of Simeon.

1. the second lot came forth to Simeon—The next lot that was drawn at Shiloh, gave the tribe of Simeon his inheritance within the territory, which had been assigned to that of Judah. The knowledge of Canaan possessed by the Israelites, when the division of the land commenced, was but very general, being derived from the rapid sweep they had made over it during the course of conquest; and it was on the ground of that rough survey alone that the distribution proceeded, by which Judah received an inheritance. Time showed that this territory was too large (Jos 19:9), either for their numbers, however great, to occupy and their arms to defend, or too large in proportion to the allotments of the other tribes. Justice therefore required (what kind and brotherly feeling readily dictated) a modification of their possession; and a part of it was appropriated to Simeon. By thus establishing it within the original domain of another tribe, the prophecy of Jacob in regard to Simeon was fulfilled (Ge 49:7); for from its boundaries being not traced, there is reason to conclude that its people were divided and dispersed among those of Judah; and though one group of its cities named (Jos 19:2-6), gives the idea of a compact district, as it is usually represented by map makers, the other group (Jos 19:7, 8) were situated, two in the south, and two elsewhere, with tracts of the country around them.

Jos 19:10-16. Of Zebulun.

10-14. the third lot came up for the children of Zebulun—The boundaries of the possession assigned to them extended from the Lake of Chinnereth (Sea of Galilee) on the east, to the Mediterranean on the west. Although they do not seem at first to have touched on the western shore—a part of Manasseh running north into Asher (Jos 17:10)—they afterwards did, according to the prediction of Moses (De 33:19). The extent from north to south cannot be very exactly traced; the sites of many of the places through which the boundary line is drawn being unknown. Some of the cities were of note.

Jos 19:17-23. Of Issachar.

17-20. the fourth lot came out to Issachar—Instead of describing the boundaries of this tribe, the inspired historian gives a list of its principal cities. These cities are all in the eastern part of the plain of Esdraelon.

Jos 19:24-31. Of Asher.

24-31. the fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher—The western boundary is traced from north to south through the cities mentioned; the site of them, however, is unknown.

26. to Carmel … and to Shihor-libnath—that is, the "black" or "muddy river"; probably the Nahr Belka, below Dor (Tantoura); for that town belonged to Asher (Jos 17:10). Thence the boundary line turned eastward to Beth-dagon, a town at the junction of Zebulun and Naphtali, and ran northwards as far as Cabul, with other towns, among which is mentioned (Jos 19:28) "great Zidon," so called on account of its being even then the flourishing metropolis of the Phœnicians. Though included in the inheritance of Asher, this town was never possessed by them (Jud 1:31).

29. and then the coast turneth to Ramah—now El-Hamra, which stood where the Leontes (Litany) ends its southern course and flows westward.

and to the strong city Tyre—The original city appears to have stood on the mainland, and was well-fortified. From Tyre the boundary ran to Hosah, an inland town; and then, passing the unconquered district of Achzib (Jud 1:31), terminated at the seacoast.

Jos 19:32-39. Of Naphtali.

32-39. the sixth lot came out to the children of Naphtali—Although the cities mentioned have not been discovered, it is evident, from Zaanannim, which is by Kedesh, that is, on the northwest of Lake Merom (Jud 4:11), that the boundary described (Jos 19:34) ran from the southwest towards the northeast, up to the sources of the Jordan.

34. Aznoth-tabor—on the east of Tabor towards the Jordan, for the border ran thence to Hukkok, touching upon that of Zebulun; and as the territory of Zebulun did not extend as far as the Jordan, Aznoth-tabor and Hukkok must have been border towns on the line which separated Naphtali from Issachar.

to Judah upon Jordan toward the sunrising—The sixty cities, Havoth-jair, which were on the eastern side of the Jordan, opposite Naphtali, were reckoned as belonging to Judah, because Jair, their possessor, was a descendant of Judah (1Ch 2:4-22) [Keil].

Jos 19:40-48. Of Dan.

40-46. the seventh lot came out for the tribe … Dan—It lay on the west of Benjamin and consisted of portions surrendered by Judah and Ephraim. Its boundaries are not stated, as they were easily distinguishable from the relative position of Dan to the three adjoining tribes.

47. the children of Dan went up to fight against Leshem—The Danites, finding their inheritance too small, decided to enlarge its boundaries by the sword; and, having conquered Leshem (Laish), they planted a colony there, calling the new settlement by the name of Dan (see on Jud 18:7).

Jos 19:49-51. The Children of Israel Give an Inheritance to Joshua.

50. According to the word of the Lord they gave him the city which he asked—It was most proper that the great leader should receive an inheritance suited to his dignity, and as a reward for his public services. But the gift was not left to the spontaneous feelings of a grateful people. It was conferred "according to the word of the Lord"—probably an unrecorded promise, similar to what had been made to Caleb (Jos 14:9).

Timnath-serah—or Heres, on Mount Gaash (Jud 2:9). Joshua founded it, and was afterwards buried there (Jos 24:30).

51. These are the inheritances—This verse is the formal close of the section which narrates the history of the land distribution; and to stamp it with due importance, the names of the commissioners are repeated, as well as the spot where so memorable a transaction took place.
