1 And it came to pass, when all the kings H4428 of the Amorites, H567 which were on the side H5676 of Jordan H3383 westward, H3220 and all the kings H4428 of the Canaanites, H3669 which were by the sea, H3220 heard H8085 that the LORD H3068 had dried up H3001 the waters H4325 of Jordan H3383 from before H6440 the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 until we were passed over, H5674 that their heart H3824 melted, H4549 neither was there spirit H7307 in them any more, because H6440 of the children H1121 of Israel. H3478
And she said H559 unto the men, H582 I know H3045 that the LORD H3068 hath given H5414 you the land, H776 and that your terror H367 is fallen H5307 upon us, and that all the inhabitants H3427 of the land H776 faint H4127 because H6440 of you. For we have heard H8085 how the LORD H3068 dried up H3001 the water H4325 of the Red H5488 sea H3220 for you, H6440 when ye came out H3318 of Egypt; H4714 and what ye did H6213 unto the two H8147 kings H4428 of the Amorites, H567 that were on the other side H5676 Jordan, H3383 Sihon H5511 and Og, H5747 whom ye utterly destroyed. H2763 And as soon as we had heard H8085 these things, our hearts H3824 did melt, H4549 neither did there remain H6965 any more courage H7307 in any man, H376 because H6440 of you: for the LORD H3068 your God, H430 he is God H430 in heaven H8064 above, H4605 and in earth H776 beneath.
For Gaza H5804 shall be forsaken, H5800 and Ashkelon H831 a desolation: H8077 they shall drive out H1644 Ashdod H795 at the noon day, H6672 and Ekron H6138 shall be rooted up. H6131 Woe H1945 unto the inhabitants H3427 of the sea H3220 coast, H2256 the nation H1471 of the Cherethites! H3774 the word H1697 of the LORD H3068 is against you; O Canaan, H3667 the land H776 of the Philistines, H6430 I will even destroy H6 thee, that there shall be no inhabitant. H3427 And the sea H3220 coast H2256 shall be dwellings H5116 and cottages H3741 for shepherds, H7462 and folds H1448 for flocks. H6629
Howl H3213 ye; for the day H3117 of the LORD H3068 is at hand; H7138 it shall come H935 as a destruction H7701 from the Almighty. H7706 Therefore shall all hands H3027 be faint, H7503 and every man's H582 heart H3824 shall melt: H4549 And they shall be afraid: H926 pangs H6735 and sorrows H2256 shall take hold H270 of them; they shall be in pain H2342 as a woman that travaileth: H3205 they shall be amazed H8539 one H376 at another; H7453 their faces H6440 shall be as flames. H3851
For, lo, the kings H4428 were assembled, H3259 they passed by H5674 together. H3162 They saw H7200 it, and so they marvelled; H8539 they were troubled, H926 and hasted away. H2648 Fear H7461 took hold H270 upon them there, and pain, H2427 as of a woman in travail. H3205
And Canaan H3667 begat H3205 Sidon H6721 his firstborn, H1060 and Heth, H2845 And the Jebusite, H2983 and the Amorite, H567 and the Girgasite, H1622 And the Hivite, H2340 and the Arkite, H6208 and the Sinite, H5513 And the Arvadite, H721 and the Zemarite, H6786 and the Hamathite: H2577 and afterward H310 were the families H4940 of the Canaanites H3669 spread abroad. H6327 And the border H1366 of the Canaanites H3669 was from Sidon, H6721 as thou comest H935 to Gerar, H1642 unto Gaza; H5804 as thou goest, H935 unto Sodom, H5467 and Gomorrah, H6017 and Admah, H126 and Zeboim, H6636 even unto Lasha. H3962
The king H4428 of Jericho, H3405 one; H259 the king H4428 of Ai, H5857 which is beside H6654 Bethel, H1008 one; H259 The king H4428 of Jerusalem, H3389 one; H259 the king H4428 of Hebron, H2275 one; H259 The king H4428 of Jarmuth, H3412 one; H259 the king H4428 of Lachish, H3923 one; H259 The king H4428 of Eglon, H5700 one; H259 the king H4428 of Gezer, H1507 one; H259 The king H4428 of Debir, H1688 one; H259 the king H4428 of Geder, H1445 one; H259 The king H4428 of Hormah, H2767 one; H259 the king H4428 of Arad, H6166 one; H259 The king H4428 of Libnah, H3841 one; H259 the king H4428 of Adullam, H5725 one; H259 The king H4428 of Makkedah, H4719 one; H259 the king H4428 of Bethel, H1008 one; H259 The king H4428 of Tappuah, H8599 one; H259 the king H4428 of Hepher, H2660 one; H259 The king H4428 of Aphek, H663 one; H259 the king H4428 of Lasharon, H8289 one; H259 The king H4428 of Madon, H4068 one; H259 the king H4428 of Hazor, H2674 one; H259 The king H4428 of Shimronmeron, H8112 one; H259 the king H4428 of Achshaph, H407 one; H259 The king H4428 of Taanach, H8590 one; H259 the king H4428 of Megiddo, H4023 one; H259 The king H4428 of Kedesh, H6943 one; H259 the king H4428 of Jokneam H3362 of Carmel, H3760 one; H259 The king H4428 of Dor H1756 in the coast H5299 of Dor, H1756 one; H259 the king H4428 of the nations H1471 of Gilgal, H1537 one; H259 The king H4428 of Tirzah, H8656 one: H259 all the kings H4428 thirty H7970 and one. H259
The people H5971 shall hear, H8085 and be afraid: H7264 sorrow H2427 shall take hold H270 on the inhabitants H3427 of Palestina. H6429 Then H227 the dukes H441 of Edom H123 shall be amazed; H926 the mighty men H352 of Moab, H4124 trembling H7461 shall take hold H270 upon them; all the inhabitants H3427 of Canaan H3667 shall melt away. H4127
In the same H1931 day H3117 the LORD H3068 made H3772 a covenant H1285 with Abram, H87 saying, H559 Unto thy seed H2233 have I given H5414 this land, H776 from the river H5104 of Egypt H4714 unto the great H1419 river, H5104 the river H5104 Euphrates: H6578 The Kenites, H7017 and the Kenizzites, H7074 and the Kadmonites, H6935 And the Hittites, H2850 and the Perizzites, H6522 and the Rephaims, H7497 And the Amorites, H567 and the Canaanites, H3669 and the Girgashites, H1622 and the Jebusites. Commentary on Joshua 5 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 5
Israel have now got over Jordan, and the waters which had opened before them, to favour their march forward, are closed again behind them, to forbid their retreat backward. They have now got footing in Canaan, and must apply themselves to the conquest of it, in order to which this chapter tells us,
Jos 5:1-9
A vast show, no doubt, the numerous camp of Israel made in the plains of Jericho, where now they had pitched their tents. Who can count the dust of Jacob? That which had long been the church in the wilderness has now come up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved, and looks forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners. How terrible she was in the eyes of her enemies we are here told, v. 1. How fair and clear she was made in the eyes of her friends, by the rolling away of the reproach of Egypt, we are told in the following verses.
Jos 5:10-12
We may well imagine that the people of Canaan were astonished, and that when they observed the motions of the enemy they could not but think them very strange. When soldiers take the field they are apt to think themselves excused from religious exercises (they have not time nor thought to attend to them), yet Joshua opens the campaign with one act of devotion after another. What was afterwards said to another Joshua might truly be said to this, Hear now, O Joshua! thou and thy fellows that sit before thee are men wondered at (Zec. 3:8), and yet indeed he took the right method. that is likely to end well which begins with God. Here is,
Jos 5:13-15
We have hitherto found God often speaking to Joshua, but we read not till now of any appearance of God's glory to him; now that his difficulties increased his encouragements were increased in proportion. Observe,
And (lastly) Hereby he prepares him to receive the instructions he was about to give him concerning the siege of Jericho, which this captain of the Lord's host had now come to give Israel possession of.
