15 And G1161 he said G2036 unto G4314 them, G846 Take heed, G3708 and G2532 beware G5442 of G575 covetousness: G4124 for G3754 a man's G5100 G846 life G2222 consisteth G2076 not G3756 in G1722 the abundance G4052 of G1537 the things which he G846 possesseth. G5224
But G1161 godliness G2150 with G3326 contentment G841 is G2076 great G3173 gain. G4200 For G1063 we brought G1533 nothing G3762 into G1519 this world, G2889 and it is certain G1212 G3754 we can G1410 carry G1627 nothing G3761 G5100 out. G1627 And G1161 having G2192 food G1305 and G2532 raiment G4629 let us be G714 therewith G5125 content. G714 But G1161 they that will G1014 be rich G4147 fall G1706 into G1519 temptation G3986 and G2532 a snare, G3803 and G2532 into many G4183 foolish G453 and G2532 hurtful G983 lusts, G1939 which G3748 drown G1036 men G444 in G1519 destruction G3639 and G2532 perdition. G684 For G1063 the love of money G5365 is G2076 the root G4491 of all G3956 evil: G2556 which G3739 while some G5100 coveted after, G3713 they have erred G635 from G575 the faith, G4102 and G2532 pierced G4044 themselves G1438 through G4044 with many G4183 sorrows. G3601
But thine eyes H5869 and thine heart H3820 are not but for thy covetousness, H1215 and for to shed H8210 innocent H5355 blood, H1818 and for oppression, H6233 and for violence, H4835 to do H6213 it. Therefore thus saith H559 the LORD H3068 concerning Jehoiakim H3079 the son H1121 of Josiah H2977 king H4428 of Judah; H3063 They shall not lament H5594 for him, saying, Ah H1945 my brother! H251 or, Ah H1945 sister! H269 they shall not lament H5594 for him, saying, Ah H1945 lord! H113 or, Ah H1945 his glory! H1935
But G2532 fornication, G4202 and G1161 all G3956 uncleanness, G167 or G2228 covetousness, G4124 let it G3687 not be once G3366 named G3687 among G1722 you, G5213 as G2531 becometh G4241 saints; G40 Neither G2532 filthiness, G151 nor G2532 foolish talking, G3473 nor G2228 jesting, G2160 which G3588 are G433 not G3756 convenient: G433 but G235 rather G3123 giving of thanks. G2169 For G1063 this G5124 ye know, G2075 G1097 that G3754 no G3756 G3956 whoremonger, G4205 nor G2228 unclean person, G169 nor G2228 covetous man, G4123 who G3739 is G2076 an idolater, G1496 hath G2192 any inheritance G2817 in G1722 the kingdom G932 of Christ G5547 and G2532 of God. G2316
Yet G2532 not G3756 altogether G3843 with the fornicators G4205 of this G5127 world, G2889 or G2228 with the covetous, G4123 or G2228 extortioners, G727 or G2228 with idolaters; G1496 for G1893 then G686 must ye needs G3784 go G1831 out of G1537 the world. G2889 But G1161 now G3570 I have written G1125 unto you G5213 not G3361 to keep company, G4874 if G1437 any man G5100 that is called G3687 a brother G80 be G2228 a fornicator, G4205 or G2228 covetous, G4123 or G2228 an idolater, G1496 or G2228 a railer, G3060 or G2228 a drunkard, G3183 or G2228 an extortioner; G727 with such an one G5108 no not G3366 to eat. G4906
Therefore G1223 G5124 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 Take no G3361 thought G3309 for your G5216 life, G5590 what G5101 ye shall eat, G5315 or G2532 what G5101 ye shall drink; G4095 nor yet for G3366 your G5216 body, G4983 what G5101 ye shall put on. G1746 Is G2076 not G3780 the life G5590 more than G4119 meat, G5160 and G2532 the body G4983 than raiment? G1742 Behold G1689 G1519 the fowls G4071 of the air: G3772 for G3754 they sow G4687 not, G3756 neither G3761 do they reap, G2325 nor G3761 gather G4863 into G1519 barns; G596 yet G2532 your G5216 heavenly G3770 Father G3962 feedeth G5142 them. G846 Are G1308 ye G5210 not G3756 much G3123 better than G1308 they? G846
He that loveth H157 silver H3701 shall not be satisfied H7646 with silver; H3701 nor he that loveth H157 abundance H1995 with increase: H8393 this is also vanity. H1892 When goods H2896 increase, H7235 they are increased H7231 that eat H398 them: and what good H3788 is there to the owners H1167 thereof, saving H518 the beholding H7207 H7212 of them with their eyes? H5869 The sleep H8142 of a labouring man H5647 is sweet, H4966 whether he eat H398 little H4592 or much: H7235 but the abundance H7647 of the rich H6223 will not suffer H3240 him to sleep. H3462 There is H3426 a sore H2470 evil H7451 which I have seen H7200 under the sun, H8121 namely, riches H6239 kept H8104 for the owners H1167 thereof to their hurt. H7451 But those riches H6239 perish H6 by evil H7451 travail: H6045 and he begetteth H3205 a son, H1121 and there is nothing H3972 in his hand. H3027 As he came forth H3318 of his mother's H517 womb, H990 naked H6174 shall he return H7725 to go H3212 as he came, H935 and shall take H5375 nothing H3972 of his labour, H5999 which he may carry away H3212 in his hand. H3027 And this H2090 also is a sore H2470 evil, H7451 that in all points H5980 as he came, H935 so shall he go: H3212 and what profit H3504 hath he that hath laboured H5998 for the wind? H7307
Better H2896 is an handful H3709 with quietness, H5183 than both the hands H2651 full H4393 with travail H5999 and vexation H7469 of spirit. H7307 Then I returned, H7725 and I saw H7200 vanity H1892 under the sun. H8121 There is H3426 one H259 alone, and there is not a second; H8145 yea, he hath neither child H1121 nor brother: H251 yet is there no end H7093 of all his labour; H5999 neither is his eye H5869 satisfied H7646 with riches; H6239 neither saith he, For whom do I labour, H6001 and bereave H2637 my soul H5315 of good? H2896 This is also vanity, H1892 yea, it is a sore H7451 travail. H6045

Commentary on Luke 12 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 12
In this chapter we have divers excellent discourses of our Saviour's upon various occasions, many of which are to the same purport with what we had in Matthew upon other the like occasions; for we may suppose that our Lord Jesus preached the same doctrines, and pressed the same duties, at several times, in several companies, and that one of the evangelists took them as he delivered them at one time and another at another time; and we need thus to have precept upon precept, line upon line. Here,
Luk 12:1-12
We find here,
But this was not the worst of it: it was likely to be a suffering cause, though never a sinking one: let them therefore arm themselves with courage; and divers arguments are furnished here to steel them with a holy resolution in their work. Consider,
Luk 12:13-21
We have in these verses,
Luk 12:22-40
Our Lord Jesus is here inculcating some needful useful lessons upon his disciples, which he had before taught them, and had occasion afterwards to press upon them; for they need to have precept upon precept, and line upon line: "Therefore, because there are so many that are ruined by covetousness, and an inordinate affection to the wealth of this world, I say unto you, my disciples, take heed of it.' Thou, O man of God, flee these things, as well as thou, O man of the world, 1 Tim. 6:11.
Luk 12:41-53
Here is,
Luk 12:54-59
Having given his disciples their lesson in the foregoing verses, here Christ turns to the people, and gives them theirs, v. 54. He said also to the people: he preached ad populum-to the people, as well as ad clerum-to the clergy. In general, he would have them be as wise in the affairs of their souls as they are in their outward affairs. Two things he specifies:-
