28 And G1161 he was angry, G3710 and G2532 would G2309 not G3756 go in: G1525 therefore G3767 came G1831 his G846 father G3962 out, G1831 and intreated G3870 him. G846
And God H430 said H559 to Jonah, H3124 Doest thou well H3190 to be angry H2734 for the gourd? H7021 And he said, H559 I do well H3190 to be angry, H2734 even unto death. H4194
But it displeased H3415 Jonah H3124 exceedingly, H1419 H7451 and he was very angry. H2734 And he prayed H6419 unto the LORD, H3068 and said, H559 I pray H577 thee, O LORD, H3068 was not this my saying, H1697 when I was yet in my country? H127 Therefore I fled H1272 before H6923 unto Tarshish: H8659 for I knew H3045 that thou art a gracious H2587 God, H410 and merciful, H7349 slow H750 to anger, H639 and of great H7227 kindness, H2617 and repentest H5162 thee of the evil. H7451 Therefore now, O LORD, H3068 take, H3947 I beseech thee, my life H5315 from me; for it is better H2896 for me to die H4194 than to live. H2416 Then said H559 the LORD, H3068 Doest thou well H3190 to be angry? H2734
But unto Cain H7014 and to his offering H4503 he had not respect. H8159 And Cain H7014 was very H3966 wroth, H2734 and his countenance H6440 fell. H5307 And the LORD H3068 said H559 unto Cain, H7014 Why art thou wroth? H2734 and why is thy countenance H6440 fallen? H5307 If H518 thou doest well, H3190 shalt thou not be accepted? H7613 and if thou doest not well, H3190 sin H2403 lieth H7257 at the door. H6607 And unto thee shall be his desire, H8669 and thou shalt rule H4910 over him.
But G1161 the Jews G2453 stirred up G3951 the devout G4576 and G2532 honourable G2158 women, G1135 and G2532 the chief men G4413 of the city, G4172 and G2532 raised G1892 persecution G1375 against G1909 Paul G3972 and G2532 Barnabas, G921 and G2532 expelled G1544 them G846 out of G575 their G846 coasts. G3725
Now then G3767 we are ambassadors G4243 for G5228 Christ, G5547 as though G5613 God G2316 did beseech G3870 you by G1223 us: G2257 we pray G1189 you in G5228 Christ's G5547 stead, G5228 be ye reconciled G2644 to God. G2316
But G235 I say, G3004 Did G1097 not G3378 Israel G2474 know? G1097 First G4413 Moses G3475 saith, G3004 I G1473 will provoke G3863 you G5209 to jealousy G3863 by G1909 them that are no G3756 people, G1484 and by G1909 a foolish G801 nation G1484 I will anger G3949 you. G5209
And G2532 he said G2036 unto G4314 me, G3165 Depart: G4198 for G3754 I G1473 will send G1821 thee G4571 far hence G3112 unto G1519 the Gentiles. G1484 And G1161 they gave G191 him G846 audience G191 unto G891 this G5127 word, G3056 and G2532 then lifted up G1869 their G846 voices, G5456 and said, G3004 Away with G142 such G5108 a fellow from G575 the earth: G1093 for G1063 it is G2520 not G3756 fit G2520 that he G846 should live. G2198
And G1161 there came thither G1904 certain Jews G2453 from G575 Antioch G490 and G2532 Iconium, G2430 who G2532 persuaded G3982 the people, G3793 and, G2532 having stoned G3034 Paul, G3972 drew G4951 him out of G1854 the city, G4172 supposing G3543 he G846 had been dead. G2348
But G1161 the unbelieving G544 Jews G2453 stirred up G1892 the Gentiles, G1484 and G2532 made G2559 their minds G5590 evil affected G2559 against G2596 the brethren. G80
And Eliab H446 his eldest H1419 brother H251 heard H8085 when he spake H1696 unto the men; H582 and Eliab's H446 anger H639 was kindled H2734 against David, H1732 and he said, H559 Why camest thou down H3381 hither? and with whom hast thou left H5203 those H2007 few H4592 sheep H6629 in the wilderness? H4057 I know H3045 thy pride, H2087 and the naughtiness H7455 of thine heart; H3824 for thou art come down H3381 that thou mightest see H7200 the battle. H4421
But G1161 when the Jews G2453 saw G1492 the multitudes, G3793 they were filled G4130 with envy, G2205 and G2532 spake against G483 those things which were spoken G3004 by G5259 Paul, G3972 contradicting G483 and G2532 blaspheming. G987
O Jerusalem, G2419 Jerusalem, G2419 which G3588 killest G615 the prophets, G4396 and G2532 stonest G3036 them that are sent G649 unto G4314 thee; G846 how often G4212 would G2309 I have gathered G1996 thy G4675 children G5043 together, G1996 as G3739 G5158 a hen G3733 doth gather her G1438 brood G3555 under G5259 her wings, G4420 and G2532 ye would G2309 not! G3756
Now G1161 when the Pharisee G5330 which G3588 had bidden G2564 him G846 saw G1492 it, he spake G2036 within G1722 himself, G1438 saying, G3004 This man, G3778 if G1487 he were G2258 a prophet, G4396 G302 would have known G1097 who G5101 and G2532 what manner G4217 of woman G1135 this is that G3748 toucheth G680 him: G846 for G3754 she is G2076 a sinner. G268
And G1161 when they had received G2983 it, they murmured G1111 against G2596 the goodman of the house, G3617
Hear H8085 the word H1697 of the LORD, H3068 ye that tremble H2730 at his word; H1697 Your brethren H251 that hated H8130 you, that cast you out H5077 for my name's H8034 sake, said, H559 Let the LORD H3068 be glorified: H3513 but he shall appear H7200 to your joy, H8057 and they shall be ashamed. Commentary on Luke 15 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 15
Evil manners, we say, beget good laws; so, in this chapter, the murmuring of the scribes and Pharisees at the grace of Christ, and the favour he showed to publicans and sinners, gave occasion for a more full discovery of that grace than perhaps otherwise we should have had in these three parables which we have in this chapter, the scope of all of which is the same, to show, not only what God had said and sworn in the Old Testament, that he had no pleasure in the death and ruin of sinners, but that he had great pleasure in their return and repentance, and rejoices in the gracious entertainment he gives them thereupon. Here is,
Luk 15:1-10
Here is,
Luk 15:11-32
We have here the parable of the prodigal son, the scope of which is the same with those before, to show how pleasing to God the conversion of sinners is, of great sinners, and how ready he is to receive and entertain such, upon their repentance; but the circumstances of the parable do much more largely and fully set forth the riches of gospel grace than those did, and it has been, and will be while the world stands, of unspeakable use to poor sinners, both to direct and to encourage them in repenting and returning to God. Now,
The younger son is the prodigal, whose character and case are here designed to represent that of a sinner, that of every one of us in our natural state, but especially of some. Now we are to observe concerning him,
Now the condition of the prodigal in this ramble of his represents to us a sinful state, that miserable state into which man is fallen.
