3 And G2532 he sought G2212 to see G1492 Jesus G2424 who G5101 he was; G2076 and G2532 could G1410 not G3756 for G575 the press, G3793 because G3754 he was G2258 little G3398 of stature. G2244
The same G3778 came G4334 therefore G3767 to Philip, G5376 which was of G575 Bethsaida G966 of Galilee, G1056 and G2532 desired G2065 him, G846 saying, G3004 Sir, G2962 we would G2309 see G1492 Jesus. G2424
Now G1161 Herod G2264 the tetrarch G5076 heard G191 of all G3956 that was done G1096 by G5259 him: G846 and G2532 he was perplexed, G1280 because G1223 that it was said G3004 of G5259 some, G5100 that G3754 John G2491 was risen G1453 from G1537 the dead; G3498 And G1161 of G5259 some, G5100 that G3754 Elias G2243 had appeared; G5316 and G1161 of others, G243 that G3754 one G1520 of the old G744 prophets G4396 was risen again. G450 And G2532 Herod G2264 said, G2036 John G2491 have G607 I G1473 beheaded: G607 but G1161 who G5101 is G2076 this, G3778 of G4012 whom G3739 I G1473 hear G191 such things? G5108 And G2532 he desired G2212 to see G1492 him. G846
And G1161 when Herod G2264 saw G1492 Jesus, G2424 he was exceeding G3029 glad: G5463 for G1063 he was G2258 desirous G2309 to see G1492 him G846 of G1537 a long G2425 season, because G1223 he had heard G191 many things G4183 of G4012 him; G846 and G2532 he hoped G1679 to have seen G1492 some G5100 miracle G4592 done G1096 by G5259 him. Commentary on Luke 19 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 19
In this chapter we have,
Luk 19:1-10
Many, no doubt, were converted to the faith of Christ of whom no account is kept in the gospels; but the conversion of some, whose case had something in it extraordinary, is recorded, as this of Zaccheus. Christ passed through Jericho, v. 1. This city was build under a curse, yet Christ honoured it with his presence, for the gospel takes away the curse. Though it ought not to have been built, yet it was not therefore a sin to live in it when it was built. Christ was now going from the other side Jordan to Bethany near Jerusalem, to raise Lazarus to life; when he was going to do one good work he contrived to do many by the way. He did good both to the souls and to the bodies of people; we have here an instance of the former. Observe,
Luk 19:11-27
Our Lord Jesus is now upon his way to Jerusalem, to his last passover, when he was to suffer and die; now here we are told,
Luk 19:28-40
We have here the same account of Christ's riding in some sort of triumph (such as it was) into Jerusalem which we had before in Matthew and Mark; let us therefore here only observe,
Luk 19:41-48
The great Ambassador from heaven is here making his public entry into Jerusalem, not to be respected there, but to be rejected; he knew what a nest of vipers he was throwing himself into, and yet see here two instances of his love to that place and his concern for it.
