38 For G1161 he is G2076 not G3756 a God G2316 of the dead, G3498 but G235 of the living: G2198 for G1063 all G3956 live G2198 unto him. G846
Jesus G2424 said G2036 unto her, G846 I G1473 am G1510 the resurrection, G386 and G2532 the life: G2222 he that believeth G4100 in G1519 me, G1691 though G2579 he were dead, G599 yet shall he live: G2198 And G2532 whosoever G3956 liveth G2198 and G2532 believeth G4100 in G1519 me G1691 shall G599 never G3364 G1519 G165 die. G599 Believest thou G4100 this? G5124
For G1063 ye are dead, G599 and G2532 your G5216 life G2222 is hid G2928 with G4862 Christ G5547 in G1722 God. G2316 When G3752 Christ, G5547 who is our G2257 life, G2222 shall appear, G5319 then G5119 shall G5319 ye G5210 also G2532 appear G5319 with G4862 him G846 in G1722 glory. G1391
For G3739 G1063 in that he died, G599 he died G599 unto sin G266 once: G2178 but G1161 in that G3739 he liveth, G2198 he liveth G2198 unto God. G2316 Likewise G3779 reckon G3049 ye G5210 also G2532 yourselves G1438 to be G1511 dead G3498 indeed G3303 unto sin, G266 but G1161 alive G2198 unto God G2316 through G1722 Jesus G2424 Christ G5547 our G2257 Lord. G2962
The LORD H3068 is the portion H4490 of mine inheritance H2506 and of my cup: H3563 thou maintainest H8551 my lot. H1486 The lines H2256 are fallen H5307 unto me in pleasant H5273 places; yea, I have a goodly H8231 heritage. H5159 I will bless H1288 the LORD, H3068 who hath given me counsel: H3289 my reins H3629 also instruct H3256 me in the night seasons. H3915 I have set H7737 the LORD H3068 always H8548 before me: because he is at my right hand, H3225 I shall not be moved. H4131 Therefore my heart H3820 is glad, H8055 and my glory H3519 rejoiceth: H1523 my flesh H1320 also shall rest H7931 in hope. H983 For thou wilt not leave H5800 my soul H5315 in hell; H7585 neither wilt thou suffer H5414 thine Holy One H2623 to see H7200 corruption. H7845 Thou wilt shew H3045 me the path H734 of life: H2416 in thy presence H6440 is fulness H7648 of joy; H8057 at thy right hand H3225 there are pleasures H5273 for evermore. H5331
Ye that fear H3373 the LORD, H3068 praise H1984 him; all ye the seed H2233 of Jacob, H3290 glorify H3513 him; and fear H1481 him, all ye the seed H2233 of Israel. H3478 For he hath not despised H959 nor abhorred H8262 the affliction H6039 of the afflicted; H6041 neither hath he hid H5641 his face H6440 from him; but when he cried H7768 unto him, he heard. H8085 My praise H8416 shall be of thee in the great H7227 congregation: H6951 I will pay H7999 my vows H5088 before them that fear H3373 him. The meek H6035 shall eat H398 and be satisfied: H7646 they shall praise H1984 the LORD H3068 that seek H1875 him: your heart H3824 shall live H2421 for ever. H5703
But G1161 now G3570 being made free G1659 from G575 sin, G266 and G1161 become servants G1402 to God, G2316 ye have G2192 your G5216 fruit G2590 unto G1519 holiness, G38 and G1161 the end G5056 everlasting G166 life. G2222 For G1063 the wages G3800 of sin G266 is death; G2288 but G1161 the gift G5486 of God G2316 is eternal G166 life G2222 through G1722 Jesus G2424 Christ G5547 our G2257 Lord. G2962
For G1063 none G3762 of us G2257 liveth G2198 to himself, G1438 and G2532 no man G3762 dieth G599 to himself. G1438 For G1063 whether G1437 G5037 we live, G2198 we live G2198 unto the Lord; G2962 and whether G1437 G5037 we die, G599 we die G599 unto the Lord: G2962 whether G1437 G5037 we live G2198 therefore, G3767 or G1437 G5037 die, G599 we are G2070 the Lord's. G2962 For G1063 to G1519 this G5124 end Christ G5547 both G2532 died, G599 and G2532 rose, G450 and G2532 revived, G326 that G2443 he might be Lord G2961 both G2532 of the dead G3498 and G2532 living. G2198
Therefore G1223 G5124 are they G1526 before G1799 the throne G2362 of God, G2316 and G2532 serve G3000 him G846 day G2250 and G2532 night G3571 in G1722 his G846 temple: G3485 and G2532 he that sitteth G2521 on G1909 the throne G2362 shall dwell G4637 among G1909 them. G846 They shall hunger G3983 no G3756 more, G2089 neither G3761 thirst G1372 any more; G2089 neither G3761 G3361 shall G4098 the sun G2246 light G4098 on G1909 them, G846 nor G3761 any G3956 heat. G2738 For G3754 the Lamb G721 which G3588 is in the midst G303 G3319 of the throne G2362 shall feed G4165 them, G846 and G2532 shall lead G3594 them G846 unto G1909 living G2198 fountains G4077 of waters: G5204 and G2532 God G2316 shall wipe away G1813 all G3956 tears G1144 from G575 their G846 eyes. Commentary on Luke 20 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 20
In this chapter we have,
All which passages we had before in Matthew and Mark, and therefore need not enlarge upon them here, unless on those particulars which we had not there.
Luk 20:1-8
In this passage of story nothing is added here to what we had in the other evangelists; but only in the first verse, where we are told,
Luk 20:9-19
Christ spoke this parable against those who were resolved not to own his authority, though the evidence of it was ever so full and convincing; and it comes very seasonably to show that by questioning his authority they forfeited their own. Their disowning the lord of their vineyard was a defeasance of their lease of the vineyard, and giving up of all their title.
Luk 20:20-26
We have here Christ's evading a snare which his enemies laid for him, by proposing a question to him about tribute. We had this passage before, both in Matthew and Mark. Here is,
Luk 20:27-38
This discourse with the Sadducees we had before, just as it is here, only that the description Christ gives of the future state is somewhat more full and large here. Observe here,
Luk 20:39-47
The scribes were students in the law, and expositors of it to the people, men in reputation for wisdom and honour, but the generality of them were enemies to Christ and his gospel. Now here we have some of them attending him, and four things we have in these verses concerning them, which we had before:-
Christ reads them their doom in a few words: These shall receive a more abundant judgment, a double damnation, both for their abuse of the poor widows, whose houses they devoured, and for their abuse of religion, and particularly of prayer, which they had made use of as a pretence for the more plausible and effectual carrying on of their worldly and wicked projects; for dissembled piety is double iniquity.
