G2176 And G2532 the scripture G1124 was fulfilled, G4137 which G3588 saith, G3004 And G2532 he was numbered G3049 with G3326 the transgressors. G459 And G2532 they that passed by G3899 railed G987 on him, G846 wagging G2795 their G846 heads, G2776 and G2532 saying, G3004 Ah, G3758 thou that destroyest G2647 the temple, G3485 and G2532 buildest G3618 it in G1722 three G5140 days, G2250 Save G4982 thyself, G4572 and G2532 come down G2597 from G575 the cross. G4716 Likewise G1161 G3668 also G2532 the chief priests G749 mocking G1702 said G3004 among G4314 themselves G240 with G3326 the scribes, G1122 He saved G4982 others; G243 himself G1438 he cannot G3756 G1410 save. G4982 Let G2597 Christ G5547 the King G935 of Israel G2474 descend G2597 now G3568 from G575 the cross, G4716 that G2443 we may see G1492 and G2532 believe. G2453 And G2532 they smote G5180 him G846 on the head G2776 with a reed, G2563 and G2532 did spit G1716 upon him, G846 and G2532 bowing G5087 their knees G1119 worshipped G4352 him. G846 And G2532 when G3753 they had mocked G1702 him, G846 they took off G1562 the purple G4209 from him, G846 and G2532 put G1746 his own G2398 clothes G2440 on G1746 him, G846 and G2532 led G1806 him G846 out G1806 to G2443 crucify G4717 him. Mark 14:55-65 STRONG

And G1161 the chief priests G749 and G2532 all G3650 the council G4892 sought G2212 for witness G3141 against G2596 Jesus G2424 to G1519 put G2289 him G846 to death; G2289 and G2532 found G2147 none. G3756 For G1063 many G4183 bare false witness G5576 against G2596 him, G846 but G2532 their witness G3141 agreed G2258 not G2470 G3756 together. G2258 And G2532 there arose G450 certain, G5100 and bare false witness G5576 against G2596 him, G846 saying, G3004 G3754 We G2249 heard G191 him G846 say, G3004 G3754 I G1473 will destroy G2647 this G5126 temple G3485 that is made with hands, G5499 and G2532 within G1223 three G5140 days G2250 I will build G3618 another G243 made without hands. G886 But G2532 neither G3761 so G3779 did G2470 their G846 witness G3141 agree together. G2258 G2470 And G2532 the high priest G749 stood up G450 in G1519 the midst, G3319 and asked G1905 Jesus, G2424 saying, G3004 Answerest G3756 thou G611 nothing? G3762 what G5101 is it which these G3778 witness G2649 against thee? G4675 But G1161 he held his peace, G4623 and G2532 answered G611 nothing. G3762 Again G3825 the high priest G749 asked G1905 him, G846 and G2532 said G3004 unto him, G846 Art G1488 thou G4771 the Christ, G5547 the Son G5207 of the Blessed? G2128 And G1161 Jesus G2424 said, G2036 I G1473 am: G1510 and G2532 ye shall see G3700 the Son G5207 of man G444 sitting G2521 on G1537 the right hand G1188 of power, G1411 and G2532 coming G2064 in G3326 the clouds G3507 of heaven. G3772 Then G1161 the high priest G749 rent G1284 his G846 clothes, G5509 and saith, G3004 What G5101 need G5532 we G2192 any further G2089 witnesses? G3144 Ye have heard G191 the blasphemy: G988 what G5101 think G5316 ye? G5213 And G1161 they all G3956 condemned G2632 him G846 to be G1511 guilty G1777 of death. G2288 And G2532 some G5100 began G756 to spit G1716 on him, G846 and G2532 to cover G4028 his G846 face, G4383 and G2532 to buffet G2852 him, G846 and G2532 to say G3004 unto him, G846 Prophesy: G4395 and G2532 the servants G5257 did strike G906 him G846 with the palms of their hands. Matthew 27:39-44 STRONG

And G1161 they that passed by G3899 reviled G987 him, G846 wagging G2795 their G846 heads, G2776 And G2532 saying, G3004 Thou that destroyest G2647 the temple, G3485 and G2532 buildest G3618 it in G1722 three G5140 days, G2250 save G4982 thyself. G4572 If G1487 thou be G1488 the Son G5207 of God, G2316 come down G2597 from G575 the cross. G4716 G1161 Likewise G3668 also G2532 the chief priests G749 mocking G1702 him, with G3326 the scribes G1122 and G2532 elders, G4245 said, G3004 He saved G4982 others; G243 himself G1438 he cannot G3756 G1410 save. G4982 If G1487 he be G2076 the King G935 of Israel, G2474 let him G2597 now G3568 come down G2597 from G575 the cross, G4716 and G2532 we will believe G4100 him. G846 He trusted G3982 in G1909 God; G2316 let him deliver G4506 him G846 now, G3568 if G1487 he will have G2309 him: G846 for G1063 he said, G2036 G3754 I am G1510 the Son G5207 of God. G2316 G1161 The thieves G3027 also, G2532 which G3588 were crucified G4957 with him, G846 cast G3679 the same G846 in his G846 teeth. G3679

Matthew 27:28-31 STRONG

G5511 And G2532 when they had platted G4120 a crown G4735 of G1537 thorns, G173 they put G2007 it upon G1909 his G846 head, G2776 and G2532 a reed G2563 in G1909 his G846 right hand: G1188 and G2532 they bowed the knee G1120 before G1715 him, G846 and mocked G1702 him, G846 saying, G3004 Hail, G5463 King G935 of the Jews! G2453 And G2532 they spit G1716 upon G1519 him, G846 and took G2983 the reed, G2563 and G2532 smote G5180 him G846 on G1519 the head. G2776 And G2532 after G3753 that they had mocked G1702 him, G846 they took G1562 the robe G5511 off G1562 from him, G846 and G2532 put G1746 his own G846 raiment G2440 on G1746 him, G846 and G2532 led G520 him G846 away G520 to G1519 crucify G4717 him.

Matthew 26:59-68 STRONG

Now G1161 the chief priests, G749 and G2532 elders, G4245 and G2532 all G3650 the council, G4892 sought G2212 false witness G5577 against G2596 Jesus, G2424 to G3704 put G2289 him G846 to death; G2289 But G2532 found G2147 none: G3756 yea, G2532 though many G4183 false witnesses G5575 came, G4334 yet found they G2147 none. G3756 G1161 At the last G5305 came G4334 two G1417 false witnesses, G5575 And said, G2036 This G3778 fellow said, G5346 I am able G1410 to destroy G2647 the temple G3485 of God, G2316 and G2532 to build G3618 it G846 in G1223 three G5140 days. G2250 And G2532 the high priest G749 arose, G450 and said G2036 unto him, G846 Answerest thou G611 nothing? G3762 what G5101 is it which these G3778 witness against G2649 thee? G4675 But G1161 Jesus G2424 held his peace. G4623 And G2532 the high priest G749 answered G611 and said G2036 unto him, G846 I adjure G1844 thee G4571 by G2596 the living G2198 God, G2316 that G2443 thou tell G2036 us G2254 whether G1487 thou G4771 be G1488 the Christ, G5547 the Son G5207 of God. G2316 Jesus G2424 saith G3004 unto him, G846 Thou G4771 hast said: G2036 nevertheless G4133 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 Hereafter G737 G575 shall ye see G3700 the Son G5207 of man G444 sitting G2521 on G1537 the right hand G1188 of power, G1411 and G2532 coming G2064 in G1909 the clouds G3507 of heaven. G3772 Then G5119 the high priest G749 rent G1284 his G846 clothes, G2440 saying, G3004 G3754 He hath spoken blasphemy; G987 what G5101 further G2089 need G5532 have we G2192 of witnesses? G3144 behold, G2396 now G3568 ye have heard G191 his G846 blasphemy. G988 What G5101 think G1380 ye? G5213 They answered G611 and G1161 said, G2036 He is G2076 guilty G1777 of death. G2288 Then G5119 did they spit G1716 in G1519 his G846 face, G4383 and G2532 buffeted G2852 him; G846 and G1161 others smote him with the palms of their hands, G4474 Saying, G3004 Prophesy G4395 unto us, G2254 thou Christ, G5547 Who G5101 is he G2076 that smote G3817 thee? Job 16:9-10 STRONG

He teareth H2963 me in his wrath, H639 who hateth H7852 me: he gnasheth H2786 upon me with his teeth; H8127 mine enemy H6862 sharpeneth H3913 his eyes H5869 upon me. They have gaped H6473 upon me with their mouth; H6310 they have smitten H5221 me upon the cheek H3895 reproachfully; H2781 they have gathered H4390 themselves together H3162 against me.

Isaiah 50:6-7 STRONG

I gave H5414 my back H1460 to the smiters, H5221 and my cheeks H3895 to them that plucked off H4803 the hair: I hid H5641 not my face H6440 from shame H3639 and spitting. H7536 For the Lord H136 GOD H3069 will help H5826 me; therefore shall I not be confounded: H3637 therefore have I set H7760 my face H6440 like a flint, H2496 and I know H3045 that I shall not be ashamed. H954

Psalms 69:7-12 STRONG

Because for thy sake I have borne H5375 reproach; H2781 shame H3639 hath covered H3680 my face. H6440 I am become a stranger H2114 unto my brethren, H251 and an alien H5237 unto my mother's H517 children. H1121 For the zeal H7068 of thine house H1004 hath eaten me up; H398 and the reproaches H2781 of them that reproached H2778 thee are fallen H5307 upon me. When I wept, H1058 and chastened my soul H5315 with fasting, H6685 that was to my reproach. H2781 I made H5414 sackcloth H8242 also my garment; H3830 and I became a proverb H4912 to them. They that sit in H3427 the gate H8179 speak H7878 against me; and I was the song H5058 of the drunkards. H8354 H7941

Psalms 35:15-16 STRONG

But in mine adversity H6761 they rejoiced, H8055 and gathered themselves together: H622 yea, the abjects H5222 gathered themselves together H622 against me, and I knew H3045 it not; they did tear H7167 me, and ceased H1826 not: With hypocritical H2611 mockers H3934 in feasts, H4580 they gnashed H2786 upon me with their teeth. H8127

Psalms 22:6-7 STRONG

But I am a worm, H8438 and no man; H376 a reproach H2781 of men, H120 and despised H959 of the people. H5971 All they that see H7200 me laugh me to scorn: H3932 they shoot out H6358 the lip, H8193 they shake H5128 the head, H7218 saying,

And now am I their song, H5058 yea, I am their byword. H4405 They abhor H8581 me, they flee far H7368 from me, and spare H2820 not to spit H7536 in my face. H6440 Because he hath loosed H6605 my cord, H3499 and afflicted H6031 me, they have also let loose H7971 the bridle H7448 before H6440 me. Upon my right H3225 hand rise H6965 the youth; H6526 they push away H7971 my feet, H7272 and they raise up H5549 against me the ways H734 of their destruction. H343 They mar H5420 my path, H5410 they set forward H3276 my calamity, H1942 H1962 they have no helper. H5826 They came H857 upon me as a wide H7342 breaking H6556 in of waters: in H8478 the desolation H7722 they rolled H1556 themselves upon me.

CHAPTER 22

Lu 22:1-6. Conspiracy of the Jewish Authorities to Put Jesus to DeathCompact with Judas.

1, 2. (See on Mt 26:1-5.)

3. Then entered Satan, &c.—but not yet in the full sense. The awful stages of it were these: (1) Covetousness being his master—passion, the Lord let it reveal itself and gather strength by entrusting him with "the bag" (Joh 12:6), as treasurer to Himself and the Twelve. (2) In the discharge of that most sacred trust he became "a thief," appropriating its contents from time to time to his own use. Satan, seeing this door into his heart standing wide open, determines to enter by it, but cautiously (2Co 2:11); first merely "putting it into his heart to betray Him" (Joh 13:2), suggesting the thought to him that by this means he might enrich himself. (3) This thought was probably converted into a settled purpose by what took place in Simon's house at Bethany. (See Mt 26:6, and see on Joh 12:4-8.) (4) Starting back, perhaps, or mercifully held back, for some time, the determination to carry it into immediate effect was not consummated till, sitting at the paschal supper, "Satan entered into him" (see on Joh 13:27), and conscience, effectually stifled, only rose again to be his tormentor. What lessons in all this for every one (Eph 4:27; Jas 4:7; 1Pe 5:8, 9)!

5. money—"thirty pieces of silver" (Mt 26:15); thirty shekels, the fine payable for man- or maid-servant accidentally killed (Ex 21:32), and equal to between four and five pounds of our money—"a goodly price that I was priced at of them" (Zec 11:13). (See on Joh 19:16.)

6. in the absence, &c.—(See Mt 26:5).

Lu 22:7-38. Last PassoverInstitution of the SupperDiscourse at the Table.

7. the day of unleavened bread—strictly the fifteenth Nisan (part of our March and April) after the paschal lamb was killed; but here, the fourteenth (Thursday). Into the difficult questions raised on this we cannot here enter.

10-13. when ye are entered the city—He Himself probably stayed at Bethany during the day.

there shall a man, &c.—(See on Lu 19:29-32).

14-18. the hour—about six P.M. Between three and this hour the lamb was killed (Ex 12:6, Margin)

15. With desire … desired—"earnestly have I longed" (as Ge 31:30, "sore longedst"). Why? It was to be His last "before He suffered"—and so became "Christ our Passover sacrificed for us" (1Co 5:7), when it was "fulfilled in the Kingdom of God," the typical ordinance thenceforth disappearing.

17. took the cup—the first of several partaken of in this service.

divide it among, &c.—that is, It is to be your last as well as Mine, "until the Kingdom of God come," or as it is beautifully given in Mt 26:29, "until that day when I shall drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom." It was the point of transition between two economies and their two great festivals, the one about to close for ever, the other immediately to open and run its majestic career until from earth it be transferred to heaven.

21, 22. (See on Joh 13:21, &c.).

24-30. there was—or "had been," referring probably to some symptoms of the former strife which had reappeared, perhaps on seeing the whole paschal arrangements committed to two of the Twelve. (See on Mr 10:42-45.)

25. benefactors—a title which the vanity of princes eagerly coveted.

26. But ye … not—Of how little avail has this condemnation of "lordship" and vain titles been against the vanity of Christian ecclesiastics?

28. continued, &c.—affecting evidence of Christ's tender susceptibility to human sympathy and support! (See on Joh 6:66, 67; see Joh 16:32.)

29. I appoint, &c.—Who is this that dispenses kingdoms, nay, the Kingdom of kingdoms, within an hour or two of His apprehension, and less than a day of His shameful death? These sublime contrasts, however, perpetually meet and entrance us in this matchless history.

30. eat and drink, &c.—(See Lu 22:16 and see on Lu 18:28, &c.).

31-34. Simon, Simon—(See on Lu 10:41).

desired to have—rather, "hath obtained you," properly "asked and obtained"; alluding to Job (Job 1:6-12; 2:1-6), whom he solicited and obtained that he might sift him as wheat, insinuating as "the accuser of the brethren" (Re 12:10), that he would find chaff enough in his religion, if indeed there was any wheat at all.

you—not Peter only, but them all.

32. But I have prayed—have been doing it already.

for thee—as most in danger. (See on Lu 22:61, 62.)

fail not—that is, entirely; for partially it did fail.

converted—brought back afresh as a penitent disciple.

strengthen, &c.—that is, make use of thy bitter experience for the fortifying of thy tempted brethren.

33. I am ready, &c.—honest-hearted, warmly-attached disciple, thinking thy present feelings immovable as a rock, thou shalt find them in the hour of temptation unstable as water: "I have been praying for thee," therefore thy faith shall not perish; but thinking this superfluous, thou shalt find that "he that trusteth in his own heart is a fool" (Pr 28:26).

34. cock … crow—"twice" (Mr 14:30).

35-38. But now—that you are going forth not as before on a temporary mission, provided for without purse or scrip, but into scenes of continued and severe trial, your methods must be different; for purse and scrip will now be needed for support, and the usual means of defense.

37. the things concerning me—decreed and written.

have an end—are rapidly drawing to a close.

38. two swords … enough—they thinking He referred to present defense, while His answer showed He meant something else.

Lu 22:39-46. Agony in the Garden.

39. as … wont—(See Joh 18:2).

40. the place—the Garden of Gethsemane, on the west or city side of the mount. Comparing all the accounts of this mysterious scene, the facts appear to be these: (1) He bade nine of the Twelve remain "here" while He went and prayed "yonder." (2) He "took the other three, Peter, James, and John, and began to be sore amazed [appalled], sorrowful, and very heavy [oppressed], and said, My soul is exceeding sorrowful even unto death"—"I feel as if nature would sink under this load, as if life were ebbing out, and death coming before its time"—"tarry ye here, and watch with Me"; not, "Witness for Me," but, "Bear Me company." It did Him good, it seems, to have them beside Him. (3) But soon even they were too much for Him: He must be alone. "He was withdrawn from them about a stone's-cast"—though near enough for them to be competent witnesses and kneeled down, uttering that most affecting prayer (Mr 14:36), that if possible "the cup," of His approaching death, "might pass from Him, but if not, His Father's will be done": implying that in itself it was so purely revolting that only its being the Father's will would induce Him to taste it, but that in that view of it He was perfectly prepared to drink it. It is no struggle between a reluctant and a compliant will, but between two views of one event—an abstract and a relative view of it, in the one of which it was revolting, in the other welcome. By signifying how it felt in the one view, He shows His beautiful oneness with ourselves in nature and feeling; by expressing how He regarded it in the other light, He reveals His absolute obediential subjection to His Father. (4) On this, having a momentary relief, for it came upon Him, we imagine, by surges, He returns to the three, and finding them sleeping, He addresses them affectingly, particularly Peter, as in Mr 14:37, 38. He then (5) goes back, not now to kneel, but fell on His face on the ground, saying the same words, but with this turn, "If this cup may not pass," &c. (Mt 26:42)—that is, 'Yes, I understand this mysterious silence (Ps 22:1-6); it may not pass; I am to drink it, and I will'—"Thy will be done!" (6) Again, for a moment relieved, He returns and finds them "sleeping for sorrow," warns them as before, but puts a loving construction upon it, separating between the "willing spirit" and the "weak flesh." (7) Once more, returning to His solitary spot, the surges rise higher, beat more tempestuously, and seem ready to overwhelm Him. To fortify Him for this, "there appeared an angel unto Him from heaven strengthening Him"—not to minister light or comfort (He was to have none of that, and they were not needed nor fitted to convey it), but purely to sustain and brace up sinking nature for a yet hotter and fiercer struggle. And now, He is "in an agony, and prays more earnestly"—even Christ's prayer, it seems, admitted of and now demanded such increase—"and His sweat was as it were great drops [literally, 'clots'] of blood falling down to the ground." What was this? Not His proper sacrificial offering, though essential to it. It was just the internal struggle, apparently hushing itself before, but now swelling up again, convulsing His whole inner man, and this so affecting His animal nature that the sweat oozed out from every pore in thick drops of blood, falling to the ground. It was just shuddering nature and indomitable will struggling together. But again the cry, If it must be, Thy will be done, issues from His lips, and all is over. "The bitterness of death is past." He has anticipated and rehearsed His final conflict, and won the victory—now on the theater of an invincible will, as then on the arena of the Cross. "I will suffer," is the grand result of Gethsemane: "It is finished" is the shout that bursts from the Cross. The Will without the Deed had been all in vain; but His work was consummated when He carried the now manifested Will into the palpable Deed, "by the which WILL we are sanctified THROUGH THE OFFERING OF THE BODY OF Jesus Christ once for all" (Heb 10:10). (8) At the close of the whole scene, finding them still sleeping (worn out with continued sorrow and racking anxiety), He bids them, with an irony of deep emotion, "sleep on now and take their rest, the hour is come, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners, rise, let us be going, the traitor is at hand." And while He spoke, Judas approached with his armed band. Thus they proved "miserable comforters," broken reeds; and thus in His whole work He was alone, and "of the people there was none with Him."
