23 And G2532 blessed G3107 is G2076 he, whosoever G3739 shall G4624 not G3362 be offended G4624 in G1722 me. G1698
And he shall be for a sanctuary; H4720 but for a stone H68 of stumbling H5063 and for a rock H6697 of offence H4383 to both H8147 the houses H1004 of Israel, H3478 for a gin H6341 and for a snare H4170 to the inhabitants H3427 of Jerusalem. H3389 And many H7227 among them shall stumble, H3782 and fall, H5307 and be broken, H7665 and be snared, H3369 and be taken. H3920
And G2532 they were offended G4624 in G1722 him. G846 But G1161 Jesus G2424 said G2036 unto them, G846 A prophet G4396 is G2076 not G3756 without honour, G820 save G1508 in G1722 his own G846 country, G3968 and G2532 in G1722 his own G846 house. G3614 And G2532 he did G4160 not G3756 many G4183 mighty works G1411 there G1563 because G1223 of their G846 unbelief. G570
Many G4183 therefore G3767 of G1537 his G846 disciples, G3101 when they had heard G191 this, said, G2036 This G3778 is G2076 an hard G4642 saying; G3056 who G5101 can G1410 hear G191 it? G846 When G1161 Jesus G2424 knew G1492 in G1722 himself G1438 that G3754 his G846 disciples G3101 murmured G1111 at G4012 it, G5127 he said G2036 unto them, G846 Doth this G5124 offend G4624 you? G5209 What and G3767 if G1437 ye shall see G2334 the Son G5207 of man G444 ascend up G305 where G3699 he was G2258 before? G4386 It is G2076 the spirit G4151 that quickeneth; G2227 the flesh G4561 G3756 profiteth G5623 nothing: G3762 the words G4487 that G3739 I G1473 speak G2980 unto you, G5213 they are G2076 spirit, G4151 and G2532 they are G2076 life. G2222 But G235 there are G1526 some G5100 of G1537 you G5216 that G3739 believe G4100 not. G3756 For G1063 Jesus G2424 knew G1492 from G1537 the beginning G746 who G5101 they were G1526 that believed G4100 not, G3361 and G2532 who G5101 should G2076 betray G3860 him. G846 And G2532 he said, G3004 Therefore G1223 G5124 said I G2046 unto you, G5213 that G3754 no man G3762 can G1410 come G2064 unto G4314 me, G3165 except G3362 it were G5600 given G1325 unto him G846 of G1537 my G3450 Father. G3962 From G1537 that G5127 time many G4183 of his G846 disciples G3101 went G565 back, G1519 G3694 and G2532 walked G4043 no more G3765 with G3326 him. G846
Wherefore? G1302 Because G3754 they sought it not G3756 by G1537 faith, G4102 but G235 as G5613 it were by G1537 the works G2041 of the law. G3551 For G1063 they stumbled G4350 at that stumblingstone; G3037 G4348 As G2531 it is written, G1125 Behold, G2400 I lay G5087 in G1722 Sion G4622 a stumblingstone G3037 G4348 and G2532 rock G4073 of offence: G4625 and G2532 whosoever G3956 believeth G4100 on G1909 him G846 shall G2617 not G3756 be ashamed. G2617
For G1063 after G1894 that in G1722 the wisdom G4678 of God G2316 the world G2889 by G1223 wisdom G4678 knew G1097 not G3756 God, G2316 it pleased G2106 God G2316 by G1223 the foolishness G3472 of preaching G2782 to save G4982 them that believe. G4100 For G2532 G1894 the Jews G2453 require G154 a sign, G4592 and G2532 the Greeks G1672 seek G2212 after wisdom: G4678 But G1161 we G2249 preach G2784 Christ G5547 crucified, G4717 unto the Jews G2453 a stumblingblock, G3303 G4625 and G1161 unto the Greeks G1672 foolishness; G3472 But G1161 unto them G846 which G3588 are called, G2822 both G5037 Jews G2453 and G2532 Greeks, G1672 Christ G5547 the power G1411 of God, G2316 and G2532 the wisdom G4678 of God. G2316 Because G3754 the foolishness G3474 of God G2316 is G2076 wiser than G4680 men; G444 and G2532 the weakness G772 of God G2316 is G2076 stronger than G2478 men. G444 For G1063 ye see G991 your G5216 calling, G2821 brethren, G80 how that G3754 not G3756 many G4183 wise men G4680 after G2596 the flesh, G4561 not G3756 many G4183 mighty, G1415 not G3756 many G4183 noble, G2104 are called: But G235 God G2316 hath chosen G1586 the foolish things G3474 of the world G2889 to G2443 confound G2617 the wise; G4680 and G2532 God G2316 hath chosen G1586 the weak things G772 of the world G2889 to G2443 confound G2617 the things which are mighty; G2478 And G2532 base things G36 of the world, G2889 and G2532 things which are despised, G1848 hath G1586 God G2316 chosen, G1586 yea, and G2532 things which G3588 are G5607 not, G3361 to G2443 bring to nought G2673 things that are: G5607
Unto you G5213 therefore G3767 which G3588 believe G4100 he is precious: G5092 but G1161 unto them which be disobedient, G544 the stone G3037 which G3739 the builders G3618 disallowed, G593 the same G3778 is made G1096 G1519 the head G2776 of the corner, G1137 And G2532 a stone G3037 of stumbling, G4348 and G2532 a rock G4073 of offence, G4625 even to them which G3739 stumble G4350 at the word, G3056 being disobedient: G544 whereunto G1519 G3739 also G2532 they were appointed. Commentary on Luke 7 Matthew Henry Commentary
Chapter 7
In this chapter we have,
Luk 7:1-10
Some difference there is between this story of the cure of the centurion's servant as it is related here and as we had it in Mt. 8:5, etc. There it was said that the centurion came to Christ; here it is said that he sent to him first some of the elders of the Jews (v. 3), and afterwards some other friends, v. 6. But it is a rule that we are said to do that which we do by another-Quod facimus per alium, id ipsum facere judicamur. The centurion might be said to do that which he did by his proxies; as a man takes possession by his attorney. But it is probable that the centurion himself came at last, when Christ said to him (Mt. 8:13), As thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee.
This miracle is here said to have been wrought by our Lord Jesus when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, v. 1. What Christ said he said publicly; whoever would might come and hear him: In secret have I said nothing, Jn. 18:20. Now, to give an undeniable proof of the authority of his preaching word, he here gives an incontestable proof of the power and efficacy of his healing word. He that had such a commanding empire in the kingdom of nature as that he could command away diseases, no doubt has such a sovereignty in the kingdom of grace as to enjoin duties displeasing to flesh and blood, and bind, under the highest penalties, to the observance of them. This miracle was wrought in Capernaum, where most of Christ's mighty works were done, Mt. 11:23. Now observe,
Luk 7:11-18
We have here the story of Christ's raising to life a widow's son at Nain, that was dead and in the carrying out to be buried, which Matthew and Mark had made no mention of; only, in the general, Matthew had recorded it, in Christ's answer to the disciples of John, that the dead were raised up, Mt. 11:5. Observe,
Luk 7:19-35
All this discourse concerning John Baptist, occasioned by his sending to ask whether he was the Messiah or no, we had, much as it is here related, Mt. 11:2-19.
Luk 7:36-50
When and where this passage of story happened does not appear; this evangelist does not observe order of time in his narrative so much as the other evangelists do; but it comes in here, upon occasion of Christ's being reproached as a friend to publicans and sinners, to show that it was only for their good, and to bring them to repentance, that he conversed with them; and that those whom he admitted hear him were reformed, or in a hopeful way to be so. Who this woman was that here testified so great an affection to Christ does not appear; it is commonly said to be Mary Magdalene, but I find no ground in scripture for it: she is described (ch. 8:2 and Mk. 16:9) to be one out of whom Christ had cast seven devils; but that is not mentioned here, and therefore it is probable that it was not she. Now observe here,
Now in what this good woman did, we may observe,
